  • Notifying your insurance carrier of any safe or defensive driving courses you’ve completed may help lower your insurance rates
  • Applying for minimum coverage is a good way to save money on your insurance
  • Use an online quote comparison tool to evaluate the rates you could acquire from competing insurance companies

With millions of drivers on the road, some of them are bound to be either unlucky or simply unskilled, causing (or suffering) accidents, filing insurance claims, and costing their insurance company a pretty penny to keep them insured.

That cost is, of course, directly handed down to the consumer in the form of much higher premiums after an accident; a bad driving record can also make it harder to switch insurance companies or find affordable liability coverage anywhere.

Luckily, all hope is not lost; even the “bad” drivers of the world can manage to find affordable insurance with just a few handy tips.

1. Take a Safe or Defensive Driving Class

One thing that’s sure to be assumed by any insurance company is that a driver who causes or suffers from an accident is neither safe nor adequately defensive.

This is a trait for which all motorists are punished when signing up for auto insurance coverage, but the high cost of being unsafe on the road can be mitigated by taking a safe driving course or one that teaches defensive driving.

These courses are typically taken over the span of a few days, or just one evening, and they teach drivers how to avoid getting into accidents through defensive driving.

Drivers will learn the warning signs of an unsafe or non-alert driver, and they’ll learn how to carefully maneuver their vehicles to bypass accidents in progress without exacerbating the situation.

They’ll also learn how to pilot a vehicle safely, including the proper way to accelerate from a stop, how to behave at a four-way intersection, and how to handle merging and switching lanes on busy highways.

Following this class, drivers can actually notify their insurance company that they’ve completed the course and submit documentation to back this up.

Insurance companies offer policy discounts for this, and the driver can expect a reduction in the premium of between five and fifteen percent simply for learning how to better handle themselves on the road.

2. Opt for State Minimum Coverage Until Your Driving Record Improves

If a driver is in an accident for which he is deemed to be at fault, his car insurance policy will probably go up a significant amount. He can compensate for this by switching coverage levels to the current minimum amount mandated by the State Department of Insurance.

It’s certainly not the ideal situation–as minimal coverage means that any future accidents will be more expensive for the driver to recover from–but it will certainly lower premiums a good deal and compensate for the post-accident price hike.

While this can usually be done without switching insurance companies, there are quite a few companies across the country who specialize in ultra-affordable, state minimum coverage policies for driver who are either budget-conscious or accident-plagued.

Most accidents and moving violations tend to fall off a driving record within three to five years, while most major insurance companies won’t punish a driver for any incident older than three years at the time of applying for a new policy.

Once the waiting period is up, customers can probably switch to a new insurance company, reinstate their old (non-minimal) coverage limits, and forget about their unfortunate past incidents on the road.

3. Compare Insurance Rates Between Major National Insurers

Not all insurance companies punish drivers the same way for their unfortunate records on the road.

While nearly every insurance company will certainly raise a driver’s rate after an accident or a major moving violation, those increases are arbitrary and based entirely a company’s risk assessment, financial situation, and sensitivity toward a driver’s plight.

With that in mind, it’s a wise idea to shop for new car insurance coverage after a company has issued a post-accident car insurance price hike.

It’s quite possible that no other company will offer a lower rate, but there’s always a slight chance that one of the other major insurance brands will be more sympathetic to an accident or a major speeding ticket and offer a slightly better rate on coverage.

And, in this case, every penny saved is a big deal.

Use an online insurance quote comparison tool to view the rates of different companies when comparing their sensitivity to accidents and moving violations.

These tools save drivers a great deal of time by sending their information to multiple companies at once, erasing the need to visit each company’s website individually and enter the same, monotonous information time after time.

The comparison tool will then print side-by-side quotes and prices, or provide links to the insurance company’s quote, allowing drivers to examine their options.

Don’t Give Up the Fight for Affordable Car Insurance

Bad drivers are drivers, too, and they’re entitled to the best rate on car insurance that they can find.

They might have to jump through extra hoops, such as taking specific driving courses, but they’ll be excited to know that the fight for affordable car insurance coverage isn’t lost simply because of an accident.

Remember that car insurance companies are all competing for business, and they’re inclined to offer competitive rates even to those drivers who have gotten themselves into a tough situation.

With a high amount of resolve and the right online tools to get the job done, finding affordable car insurance can be accomplished even by those notorious “bad” drivers” on the nation’s highways.
