Here's what you need to know...

  • Amazon Key In-Car Delivery is available to vehicle models 2015 and newer with active OnStar and Volvo On Call accounts
  • The purpose of this amazon delivery method is to prevent packages from being stolen from front doors
  • If a package is stolen from your car, your car insurance will not help recover your losses from the stolen items

96 percent of Americans shops online, and three-quarters of those online shoppers buy from Amazon. With so many ways to save money on Amazon, no wonder Americans choose to shop online. Increased online shopping has led to an increased number of packages delivered.

This increased number of packages has led to an increase in porch pirates stealing boxes from doorsteps.

Amazon has launched several delivery methods to offer more security to their customers, including:

  • Amazon Key In-Home Delivery – This service allows customers to remotely open their front door for package deliveries.
  • Amazon Locker – This option allows customers to locate a nearby delivery locker and have their goods dropped off securely there. Amazon’s recent acquisition of Whole Foods has led to the grocery stores becoming a popular locker location.

Their latest secure delivery method is called Amazon Key In-Car Delivery. This service is available to Prime members with certain vehicles.

Make sure your vehicle is financially protected by the best car insurance for the best price. Enter your zip code into our free rate comparison tool above to get quotes.

What security does Amazon offer?

Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, and Volvo models that are a 2015 or newer model year and are equipped with an active OnStar or Volvo On Call account are compatible with this delivery method.

Customers will need to download an app to use this service and ensure the destination vehicle is within two blocks of the address used on the shipping information.

The customer will receive an alert on the day the package will be delivered which will indicate the time-frame window for delivery. When the courier arrives, that person will scan the package which will unlock the vehicle.

Immediately upon delivery, the courier will send a “completed” message to the customer and the vehicle will lock automatically.

Some customers are excited to use this more secure method of delivery while others fear a loss of security by putting their car in a vulnerable position by being unlocked. For those worried about Amazon’s invasion of their privacy, keep the following in mind:

  • You can’t trust your package is safe sitting on your front porch.
  • No one will force you to use in-car delivery.
  • If a delivery person makes a habit of stealing from vehicles, he’s going to be caught.

Another fear people have is that their car will be broken into following delivery by someone trying to get the freshly delivered package.

This is certainly a possibility and Amazon has a solution. Their happiness guarantee ensures that if anything is missing or stolen from your vehicle as the result of an Amazon delivery, they will make it right.

How else can you be protected?

Amazon says they have your back if something is stolen, but if that promise doesn’t ease your fears, you may be wondering if there is a type of insurance coverage you should have to be sure you’re protected.

Surprisingly, your car insurance will not protect items stolen from your vehicle. If your car is damaged by being broken into, your comprehensive coverage will fix pay to repair the damage, but it won’t cover your belongings.

Your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance will offer financial coverage for personal items that are stolen.

Remember that typically, there is a deductible for both comprehensive coverage and homeowner’s coverage.

If you carry a $500 deductible each for comprehensive and homeowner’s coverage and a thief breaks a window and causes $500 of damage and then steals your package and other belongings which have a combined value of $400, you will be out $900.

Your insurance won’t provide financial compensation because the damages didn’t exceed the deductibles. If damages exceed your deductible, you can weight the benefits of making a claim with the risk of increased premiums.

If you’re considering using Amazon Key In-Car Delivery, your car has to be newer, and you would be wise to make sure you have full coverage on it.
