While it’s not necessarily a secret, many automobile consumers aren’t aware of the fact that Acura is a division of the Honda Motor Company that was created in 1986.
The entire purpose of creating a new brand and a new presence was to introduce a luxury line of vehicles in the United States that was imported from overseas.
The first two models to be released in the US by the Japanese manufacturer were the Legend, which was a sedan, and the more compact Integra.
After just two years of selling, Acura became the top-selling luxury import brand. The brand was so popular that Toyota released their luxury Lexus brand and Nissan released Infiniti.
In just over 30 years, the Acura logo has been one of the leading sports, luxury brands that deals in the US. After releasing dozens of different models, Acura designed one of the newer models referred to as the RLX.

History of the Acura RLX
The Acura RLX was introduced to the lineup of available models just three years ago in 2014.
It was originally called the RL but earned the X because the newer sedan model was larger and designed with a front-wheel drive that provided more power. Since 2014, the RLX has been a sports hybrid that boasts fuel efficiency without compromising fuel efficiency.
Since the first generation model was equipped with both a V6 engine and a 47hp electric motor, it could achieve 30 miles per gallon and still offer a strong and sporty ride.
While the RLX has always been a strong performer, the first generation was not well-known for its exterior design because it lacked shape you’d expect to find in a sports hybrid.

6 Facts about the 2018 Acura RLX
1 – A Refreshing New Redesign
One of the biggest complaints about the debut of the RLX in 2014 was the fact that Acura played it so safe with the exterior design.
Out of all of the luxury models produced by Acura, this larger sedan hasn’t quite succeeded in the industry as a flagship sports hybrid sedan. In fact, in three years, Acura has only sold 13,000 RLX’s.
The purpose of the redesign by Honda is to breathe life into the flagship model with a completely restyled front-end and tail.
Like the ever-popular NSX and TLX, the hybrid sedan will adopt the geometric new diamond pentagon grille that is being used as the beak of all of the upcoming releases. The idea is to attract buyers to open up to the RLX with the refreshed look.
2 – Improved Acceleration
Mechanical changes are a focus as well. One thing all divisions of Honda Motor Company are known for is reinventing the mechanical components that power their vehicles.
This reinventing is a huge reason why Honda is rated at the top of the list when it comes to reliable vehicles that perform.
The RLX is said to perform better this go around with its new 10-speed automatic transmission that will be used in other popular models like the Honda Odyssey.
If you combine the new transmission components with the Precision All-Wheel Steer system, you’ll get overall improved acceleration. In tests, the large sedan went from 0 to 60 in 5.8 seconds.
3 – New Sport Hybrid Technology
While the base model is still outfitting with a 3.5L V6 310 hp engine, Acura does use new sports hybrid technology for the upgraded package.
In fact, the car maker claims that the 2018 Acura RLX will be the best performing Acura sedan in its 30-year history with its new and powerful engine that’s specifically for precision driving.
Acura decided to utilize a powertrain that’s been very successful in this not-so successful model. That’s why you will find that sports hybrid is equipped with their supercar, the NSX’s, hybrid setup.
That hybrid setup means that it will still have a 3.5L V6 engine and three additional electric motors that will produce an output of a total of 377 horsepower. It might not produce as much output as the NSX, but it does offer the sport hybrid more of a push.
4 – New Metallic Colors
All car brands are coming out with futuristic new metallic colors that completely upgrade the aesthetics of their vehicles. Acura is no different than the rest.
In 2018, Acura will debut two new paint options that are fresh and well-received. These are the following:
- the classy Majestic Black Pearl
- the more sporty Brilliant Red Metallic
5 – Upgraded Seating
Not only has the exterior received a facelift, the interior has as well. While you can always choose black, Acura is now offered an Espresso interior color that is refreshing and classy.
The RLX has always had sports seats, but the new seats have new bolstering, piping, and stitching that improve the outside look of the already comfortable design.
6 – The New Traffic Jam Assist
Past RLX models were not equipped with a large suite of assist driving technologies until recently. Now, AcuraWatch is installed in the RLX and the suite includes a new type of technology that’s called Traffic Jam Assist.
This technology is great for people in congested areas who commute often.
The purpose of Traffic Jam Assist is to follow another car in traffic situations starting from a complete stop. This following is achieved by using adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping technology together.
You can also use lane-keeping technologies and other assistance programs that are installed in AcuraWatch.
The 2018 Acura RLX is set to be released in November of 2017. It will start at $55,400 but sport hybrid models will sell for just over $60,000.
While Acura has put a lot of focus on restyling, there hasn’t been a huge change in the overall mechanics.
It will be interesting to see if the tweaks will be enough to finally open people up to this luxury larger hybrid sedan.
Acura has received tons of awards for flagship models like the Integra and the NSX. The RLX has yet to receive any of these awards but this third generation could be the one to do it.
