Subaru is a Japanese car company that has been manufacturing cars that are fit for adventure since the 1950s.

Just years after developing prototypes, the company introduced its first American-made minicar called the Subaru 360. Interestingly enough, the company wasn’t focused on making the car sleek or appealing but rather efficient.

This inattention to appearance is why the company coined the 360 as a cheap and ugly people’s car.

Th 360 car became a milestone and cemented Subaru as a leading brand in the US mainly because it could get 66 MPG.

While proceeding models produced decades later are no longer marketed as ugly but efficient, they are still the latter. The new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek has had a major face lift to give it a more dynamic design without sacrificing performance.

#1 – Four-Season Confidence

Subaru didn’t make the list of 2017’s Most Awarded Brands for no reason. The company ranked fourth in the top 10 list because all of the models offer four-season confidence for any journey or adventure.

The Crosstrek has all of the features that a crossover needs to deliver in all conditions no matter how long the trek is.

What’s different from prior years is that the 2018 Crosstrek has grown in overall size. The vehicle is longer than before and measures in at 175.8 inches and has a larger wheelbase.

The model is also slightly wider than before but hasn’t changed in overall height. All of these changes means more interior space without compromising handling and precision.

#2 – A Whole New Architecture

The main difference between a crossover and an SUV is the architecture. The two vehicle types look eerily similar, but the crossover is a model that’s built on the chassis of a sedan.

The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek has a whole new architecture that’s manufactured on Subaru’s new Global Platform. In fact, it’s only the second model, second to the Impreza, to be upgraded with the new platform that offers better ride comfort and better handling.

#3 – A Dynamic Design That’s Sporty and Rugged

You know that the car has grown, but that’s not the only thing that you should know about the Crosstrek’s exterior.

The overall design is far more sporty and rugged before because of the exterior design face lift it was given. The elements that are notably Subaru’s signature are still part of the overall look but the company has adopted the new Dynamic x Solid design.

The new design has more of a sculptural body that makes it look sporty without compromising all of those rugged accents that you expect a car suited for the outback to have.

With wheel-arching cladding colored in black and the must-have roof rails, the car looks all the more rugged. The cladding is a great contrast to the exterior color.

#4 – A Stiffer and Safer Body

Safety wasn’t necessarily an issue in previous models but it never hurts to make changes that make something that’s safe even safer.

The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek has stiffer underpinnings that prior generations. The stiffer nature of these underpinnings means that they are better able to absorb energy. This energy absorption translates into lower car insurance costs.

Since it’s the energy that’s not absorbed that will lead to significant injuries in a crash, this new Crosstrek is safer to drive. Energy absorption has improved by as much as 40 percent.

The vehicle is also equipped with:

  • new front side airbags
  • curtain airbags
  • knee airbags for the driver

You can even pay for EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which offers a computer system full warning systems.

#5 – A Thoroughly Reworked Powertrain

The second generation of the Subaru Crosstrek is equipped with a 2.0L, 4-cylinder engine that offers an output of 152 horsepower with 145 lb-ft torque.

While the output hasn’t changed much from the previous year’s powertrain, a lot of components under the hood have been reworked.

Now, manual models are six-speed, which adds a forward gear that critics all agree was much-needed.

If you’re not convinced that there were enough changes, you’ll be happy to hear that the 2.0L engine that looks unchanged actually uses about 80 percent of new components to make the engine more efficient.

The new components also add to longevity, which is a feature that Subaru aims towards with everything the company manufactures. The X-mode drive selector, a feature the brand has become famous for, has also contributed to optimizing the engine.

#6 – A Superior Interior Design

Previous generations of the Crosstrek lacked in the interior design department. One of the biggest complaints was the uncomfortable seating and the number of features made with hard plastics.

The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek has an all-new interior, which is not only roomier than ever but much more comfortable.

While not as many hard plastics are used throughout the cabin, the seats have are where the real upgrades lie. For the first-time ever, the Crosstrek features a power driver seat and a stretched wheelbase that leaves room for passengers, pets, and gear.

The rugged exterior is great for off-roading adventures and the interior will keep you comfortable without compromising practicality.

# 7 – An Efficient and Smooth Ride

If you’re all about speed, the Crosstrek might not be for you. The output hasn’t changed significantly but the changed that were made to the Boxer engine did actually help make the car more efficient in terms of gas consumption.

The new design which gives the car a lower center of balance is an engineering change.

Not all SUVs, even compact ones like the Crosstrek, are known for getting great miles per gallon. The Crosstrek, on the other hand, have a direct injection design that offers you impressive efficiency.

In the United States, you’ll get around 27 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway. This efficiency helps to keep your fuel costs down, especially if you’re going on a journey.
