In some other parts of the United States, drivers have the option of paying a cash deposit or buying a surety bond to prove that they can pay for damages they cause, but this option is not available to people living in Illinois.

Under state law, drivers must have at least a minimum level of liability coverage in place. They can also choose from several types of optional car insurance coverage.

The exact amount of protection required depends on the individual driver.

Minimum Liability Insurance Required

Illinois drivers are required to buy bodily injury liability insurance coverage. It is used to pay for damages suffered by the occupants of the other vehicle when an accident occurs. Bodily injury will cover medical bills, rehabilitation expenses, and lost wages.

The bodily injury portion of the policy also pays for funeral expenses in the case of a fatal accident.

Liability levels for drivers in Council are set at 20/40/15.

The minimum level of bodily injury liability protection that a driver in Illinois must have in place is $20,000 for damages claimed by one person and $40,000 for all damages caused in a single accident, no matter how many people are hurt or killed.

Along with the bodily injury liability coverage, Illinois drivers must also have property damage liability protection in place.

This part of the insurance policy pays for the cost of repairs to the other driver’s vehicle, as well as any public property damaged in the accident, which includes mail boxes, street signs, and fences. Drivers must have $15,000 of property damage liability in place.

The amounts listed above are for minimum levels of coverage only.

A driver may choose to buy a policy with a higher limit if he or she wishes to do so. If the accident is a serious one, having a policy with a low level of coverage may not provide you with the enough protection to fully pay for an injured person’s damages.

In that case, the insurance policy would pay out up to its limits and you would be responsible for paying the balance personally.

The additional premiums that you would pay to get a higher level of protection would be worth it if you ever found yourself the at-fault driver in an accident that caused serious injuries.

Optional Council Car Insurance Coverage

Drivers who live in Council, as well as other parts of the state, can choose to buy insurance coverage that will protect their own vehicle. Collision coverage pays for the cost of repairing a car that has been damaged in an accident.

If the car is totaled, the policy pays out based on its cash value. Collision and comprehensive coverage are often offered together.

Comprehensive coverage is another way that drivers in Council can protect their vehicles. This type of policy pays out when the loss is caused by an event other than a collision.

If the car is damaged or destroyed from fire, wind, hail, flooding or striking an animal, you would receive compensation under this part of the policy.

The comprehensive policy also pays out if the car is stolen.

If you have taken out a loan to pay for your car, the lender may insist that you keep collision and comprehensive coverage in place until you have paid the vehicle off in full.

At that point, if the car has little cash value, you may want to consider dropping the collision coverage and limiting the comprehensive to fire and theft only.
