Here's what you need to know...

  • Design services employees pay an average of around $1,070 annually for car insurance
  • Because of developed critical thinking skills, many of these individuals will pay less for insurance than people with other types of jobs
  • Even within the Design Services category, some occupations will cost more for insurance than others

If you’re employed in the design services sector, did you know your car insurance rates are among the lowest in the country?

It’s true. Your occupation and educational level are part of the formula used to determine how much you pay for car insurance.

In a recent ranking of more than 60 occupational categories, design services ranked 11th, from lowest to highest. On average, design services workers pay about $1,070.87 annually.

“Design services” is a pretty broad job category. Most often we think about interior decorators and similar occupations, but it can also include engineers, architectural designers, computer systems engineers, and much more.

Design services jobs are those in which individuals take ideas in the concept stage and turn them into workable platforms.

Critical Thinking Skills

It goes without saying that for most design services individuals must have good critical thinking skills.

The idea of design work requires individuals to conceptualize the big picture and then put all the details in place in order to fill that big picture.

This critical thinking means such workers tend to be less freewheeling than other types of people, despite needed creativity.

Car insurance companies take this into consideration when determining their clients’ rates.

A driver who is more adept in critical thinking skills is much more likely to pay attention to everything going on around him while driving.

This heightened awareness tends to better driving and less risky behavior behind the wheel. And since car insurance is all about risk, these types of drivers are less likely to have car accidents that will result in filing claims.

Fender Benders and Major Accidents

The most common accident in America is the fender bender, which causes very little damage. So common and inexpensive are these accidents that government officials estimate the vast majority never get reported.

In many cases, the damage done is paid out of pocket so as to prevent insurance premiums from going up.

Those working in the design services field may have a higher tendency to treat fender bender accidents in this manner because they will analyze the cost-benefit of doing so.

If your rates go up by even $100 annually, over the course of the next four years you will pay more for insurance than it would’ve cost you to just pay for the accident out of pocket.

Such an analytical look is more likely to be undertaken by design services employee then by a general laborer less skilled in this analysis. And from the insurance carrier’s perspective, as long as you don’t file a claim, they don’t care how your accident is paid for.

Occupations Within the Design Services Category

Among the many different design services occupations considered here, some have better insurance rates than others.

Using the criteria previously mentioned, it would stand to reason that a computer systems designer would tend toward the lower end of the scale.

In order to be successful at such an occupation, individuals must have an array of mental skills in order to effectively deal with the complex nature of computer systems.

He or she needs to understand computer architecture, how software is programmed and written, and how every computer in the system either contributes to or detracts from that system.

Such a complex task can only be undertaken by people with a specific personality and mindset.

On the other hand, an interior designer is more artistically inclined. Rather than having to deal with a thousand minute little details and work through endless amounts of code, the interior designer may be viewed as relying more on experience and intuition.

Perhaps this means that he or she will also tend to have more of a carefree personality.

So while both of these people are employed in the design services sector, the interior designer will likely have slightly higher insurance rates than the computer systems designer.

This isn’t to say that one is better than the other, but rather a simple reflection of their tendencies as drivers.
