  • Almost all state require minimum car insurance
  • Beyond the basic required liability insurance, you may choose to purchase collision and comprehensive coverages
  • There are many discounts available for car insurance

Car insurance is a requirement that most states have.

Not carrying it or the expensive proof of ability to pay tens of thousand of dollars at the drop of a hat is actually considered a crime whether you’re in need of young driver’s car insurance or are middle age or elderly.

The purpose of car insurance is to protect not only you, but other drivers on the road as well.

It is very expensive to fix cars when they get damaged as a result of an accident and the medical costs that come with injuries that are related to car accidents can also be incredibly expensive.

Most people don’t have the necessary assets to cover these, and therefore, insurance can literally be a life saver. This is why it is of utmost importance to compare car insurance prices now.

Components that Make Up Driver’s Car Insurance

There are a few different things that make up an auto insurance policy.

It can be rather confusing to try to grasp them all without prior knowledge of the requirements that you need personally and the amounts that are required for you to carry by law as noted by your state’s individual legislation.

  • Liability – There are three different types of liability that are included with your insurance.
    • The first is how much money your policy is going to cover for an individual who gets injured in an accident besides yourself. This can be as low as $20,000.
    • The second limit is how much is required for you to carry for each accident. This is frequently the amount carried per person doubled or $40,000 in this case.
    • Property damage is also required in case you ruin something such as a fence or anything else you may hit. You’ll see liability listed as 20/40/20, or whatever the state requires.
  • Collision Coverage – Collision pays for damage you end up causing to your own vehicle in an accident. It is highly possible that your car can end up totaled if too much damage is done.
  • Comprehensive CoverageCollision is different from comprehensive. This coverage provides funds to repair your vehicle from damage that occurs from something other than a vehicular collision. Comprehensive covers collisions with animals, fence posts and the like, and even hail and fire damage.

Windshield replacements are also usually covered under comprehensive coverage.

Driver’s Car Insurance Discounts

There are many possible discounts that people are able to get when they look for car insurance. Here are some ideas to help you get a valuable drop in driver’s car insurance rates.

  • Multiple Policies – Get multiple types of insurance through one company. Many companies that offer auto insurance also offer life and homeowners insurance coverages. Companies want your business and are willing to discount multiple policies.
  • Clean Record – Keep your record clean for a minimum of three years and you will get a better rate. If you have a longer stretch of time where your record is spotless, insurance companies will be more likely to give you a break on your premium.
  • Safety Features – You may also get various discounts on your policy if your vehicle is rated better in terms of safety. You may get a discount for having anti-lock brakes, having an anti-theft system installed, and many other features that can be found on vehicles.

Optional Driver’s Car Insurance Types

There are additional components of car insurance that people are able to carry but are not mandated by the state laws. However, it can be incredibly useful for you to carry one or more types of these insurance coverages in order to have the best and most complete driver’s car insurance.

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – This coverage is optional in some states and required in others. It is used to pay for any medical bills and the wages you may lose due to injuries from an automobile accident. It may also pay for any funeral expenses that will be necessary if someone passes away.
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage – This is the type of coverage that will come in handy if someone who happens to hit you isn’t carrying the required insurance or if a hit-and-run occurs.

Extras Included in Your Policy

You may also be able to get a few different extras added on to your policy. They may increase your costs a bit but will be well worth the added cost.

Covering a rental car, if it is necessary, or coverage for any towing fees if you break down, are examples of optional coverage options. These and many others can impact driver’s car insurance rates and coverage.
