Here's what you need to know...

  • The safety ratings for Chevrolet and Nissan large trucks are similar, but there are a few notable variations
  • Each of the safety factors analyzed by IIHS could impact your auto insurance rates
  • Rates for the Chevrolet Silverado average $122 a month
  • Comparing insurance rates for several types of large trucks before you finalize your purchase plans could potentially help you to save money on insurance premiums for the entire time you own the truck

Both the Chevy Silverado 1500 truck and the Nissan Titan have considerable appeal for buyers. You may be drawn to one or both of these large truck models because of their modern style and features or because they are both known to have incredible durability and reliability on the road. They are among the most reliable trucks of the last decade.

However, remember that safety features can also affect your overall enjoyment of driving the truck and the insurance cost over the years.

With this in mind, you may be wondering how the Titan and Silverado rank in the area of safety with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety / Highway Data Loss Institute, or IIHS.

The IIHS has carefully analyzed 12 models of large 2017 trucks, and it has independently ranked these trucks in eight different safety categories.

For each category, one of the following rankings is assigned:

  • good
  • acceptable
  • marginal
  • poor

Safety ratings are just one of several factors that you need to pay attention to when shopping for a new truck, and now is the ideal time to dig deeper into the rankings for Chevy and Nissan trucks if you are planning on buying a new truck soon.

Nissan Titan vs. Chevy Silverado

The unfortunate reality is that even the safest drivers or drivers who only travel a few miles each day could potentially be involved in an accident.

The safety ratings on a specific make and model of truck could be a strong indicator of the frequency and severity of accidents that you could be involved in, and choosing a truck with a better overall safety rating is always a great idea.

However, you also need to focus on reliability, fuel economy, cost, and other important factors if you want to make the wisest buying decision possible.

Safety ratings directly impact auto insurance costs. Buying a vehicle with higher safety ratings could potentially qualify you for a better premium cost.

However, because multiple factors are reviewed to determine your actual truck insurance rates, actual quotes from leading auto insurance providers are needed to determine the most affordable large truck to insure.

Requesting online truck insurance quotes is an excellent way to save time with this important step.

Understanding Specific Safety Test Results for 2017 Large Trucks

There are three IIHS safety categories that are reviewed for each vehicle class. These include eight sub-categories. Most of the categories are rated on a scale from “poor” to “good.”

Crashworthiness

Crashworthiness has five sub-categories, and it indicates the vehicle’s ability to protect the passengers in the event of a collision.

Under this category, the Titan has received a” marginal” rating for Front Small Overlap and an “average” rating for Roof Strength.

On the other hand, the Silverado double cab model ranked “average” for Front Small Overlap, and the crew cab model has a “marginal” rating by IIHS. Chevy trucks ranked “good” for all other categories under the Crashworthiness header.

Crash Mitigation and Avoidance

Digging deeper into the safety ratings for the 2017 Titan, the truck was not ranked in the area of Front Crash Prevention, and it ranked “marginal” for headlights.

On the other hand, the two Silverado models had a “basic” rating for Front Crash Prevention. They also had a “poor” rating for Headlights.

LATCH for Child Safety Seat Anchors

LATCH is a final category that rates the ease of use for child seat anchors. The 2017 Nissan Titan had an “average” rating for the child safety LATCH category.

The Silverado crew cab had a “poor” rating for LATCH while the double cab had a “marginal” rating in the LATCH category.

2017 Top Safety Pick and/or 2017 Top Safety Pick+

Because of the significant variations between these large trucks in several safety categories, it can be difficult to determine which one has the absolute highest safety rating.

The IIHS has created the Top Safety Pick and the Top Safety Pick+ recognition to help you identify superior safety ratings. However, the Chevy and Nissan large trucks did not qualify for either of these honors.

Is Chevy more reliable than Nissan when it comes to safety?

Both the Nissan Titan and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 are popular truck models to consider, and you may be leaning heavily toward one or the other after taking your test drive.

Generally, both of the Chevrolet large truck models reviewed in 2017 have better IIHS safety ratings than the Nissan large truck model.
