Here's what you need to know...

  • Dodge Journey and Chevrolet Equinox are two popular midsize SUV models amongst families
  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducts vehicle safety testing across many categories
  • Car insurance carriers use the ratings to help accurately price insurance policies

Dodge and Chevy are often compared when it comes to midsize SUVs. Both have entries in the market that are popular with the 2017 Dodge Journey and the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox.

The Journey, known more for its bigger size with a seating capacity up to seven, with options added, is significant for those with larger families.

The Equinox holds its own with superior mileage capability, as well as high tech features to make the ride comfortable and safe. Speaking of safety, which of these models did better in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) works with the Highway Loss Data Institute. Together, these two nonprofit scientific and educational organizations strive to try and reduce the number of losses out on the road every year.

They put in endless research, including their safety testing, to help provide consumers and manufacturers with information to make better building and purchasing decisions.

Introducing the Various Safety Tests

The safety testing that the IIHS and HLDI do is quite extensive and can be broken up into a few different categories. Crashworthiness is the first category. It focuses on how well the car does when it is involved in an accident. The following subcategories are examined:

  • front small overlap
  • front moderate overlap
  • side
  • roof
  • head restraints and seats

Crash Avoidance and Mitigation is another category, focusing on the headlights, as well as the front crash prevention capabilities.

The final category, LATCH, looks at the ease of use of the child safety seat capabilities.

Scoring for the testing ranges as follows:

  • Good
  • Acceptable
  • Marginal
  • Poor

The front crash prevention test is rated a bit differently, with the following scores:

  • superior
  • advanced
  • basic

Crashworthiness Testing for the Dodge Journey and Chevrolet Equinox

When comparing the Crashworthiness testing of the two models, it is the Chevrolet Equinox that tests safer than the Dodge Journey.

The Equinox received the highest possible rating of Good for every single category that was tested.

The Dodge Journey did not fare as well. It received a rating of Poor for the front small overlap testing.

The rest of the scores for the vehicle came in at Good in this category of testing, but the Poor rating puts it one step below in the Crashworthiness area when compared to the Equinox.

Crash Avoidance and Mitigation Testing

The area of Crash Avoidance and Mitigation was another win for the Equinox. It received a rating of Basic in the front crash prevention.

The Dodge Journey was not tested as there were no features available to see how adequately is would perform in this area.

Headlights were not tested on the Equinox, so it is hard to compare to the Journey. The Journey, though, did get the lowest score of Poor when it came to the headlights.

Comparing Child LATCH

Looking at the ease of use of the child safety seats, it is again that the Equinox has the higher of the two vehicles when it comes to the scoring.

The Equinox came in with a score of Acceptable when looking at the ease of use of the child safety seat LATCH. The Journey came in with a score of Marginal.

Neither had a Poor, but also neither received the highest rating of Good.

Any Top Safety Picks?

Neither the Dodge Journey or the Chevrolet Equinox received top honors with the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+. For a vehicle to win one of these honors, it needs predominately high scores across the board.

The Chevrolet Equinox, for the 2017 model year, is the safer of the two vehicles when compared to the Dodge Journey.

As we have seen in all of the safety testings, the Equinox was on par or better regarding marks on the IIHS and HLDI safety testing across the board when compared to the Dodge Journey.
