Here's what you need to know...

  • Safety ratings for large trucks is a point of concern among some auto buyers, and researching the current ratings for the most recent model year can be eye-opening
  • The Honda Ridgeline received a superior rating for safety from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
  • Multiple safety-related factors are reviewed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to calculate safety rankings for large trucks

Any truck driver could be involved in an accident as soon as he or she slides behind the wheel, but there are some situations where drivers are at a greater risk of being involved in a collision.

For example, you may be more likely to be involved in a truck accident if you drive in bad weather conditions, if you are a new and inexperienced driver, or if you go off-roading in your truck.

In an effort to help you identify the safest large trucks available that you can buy, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety/Highway Data Loss Institute has carefully rated each popular large truck model in different safety areas.

When you analyze these safety ratings for Honda and Ford large trucks, you may be surprised to learn that one brand ranks considerably higher in the area of safety than others do.

Which truck has the best crash rating?

The IIHS ranks Honda and Ford trucks as well as all other large truck models in eight unique safety categories. The ratings available for each of these eight categories include good, acceptable, marginal, and poor.

For 2017, the Honda Ridgeline crew cab was compared against both the 2017 Ford F-150 super-crew model and the Ford F-150 super-cab model.

Understandably, you want to know how these three vehicles rate against each other in the area of safety.

Safety ratings could help you to choose a safer vehicle to buy, and you may discover when comparing all of the insurance options to determine which insurance rates for safer vehicles may be more affordable.

Exploring Specific Safety Test Results

The 2017 Honda Ridgeline received a superior safety test rating in all categories that were reviewed and analyzed. On the other hand, the two Ford truck models reviewed by the institute had much lower rankings in the areas of crash avoidance and migration and child seat anchors.

A closer look at each of these factors for Honda and Ford trucks could help you to form an educated decision about which type of large truck you should purchase.

In the area of crashworthiness, the front and side components of the truck as well as truck sides, the roof strength, and the head restraints and seats are analyzed.

Notably, all three trunks received a G rating, which indicates a good result. Good is the highest level of safety ratings issued through the IIHS.

The trucks were also ranked in the area of crash avoidance and mitigation, and this includes areas for headlights and front crash prevention.

Be aware that both of the Ford trucks received the lowest possible marks in these areas, and the Honda model received the highest ratings in these areas.

Child seat anchors were also inspected carefully by the truck manufacturers and safety rating agency, and neither company ranked well.

Honda slightly edged out the Ford models with a marginal rating, and the two Ford trucks received a poor rating for these two types of safety tests.

2017 Top Safety Pick and/or 2017 Top Safety Pick+

The IIHS has awarded the 2017 Honda Ridgeline with the honor of “Top Safety Pick” for this year.

The truck was ranked against 11 other types of large trucks created by some of the biggest and most reputable automakers in the world.

Notably, the 2017 Honda Ridgeline was the only vehicle to receive this type of honor.

Bear in mind that the Top Safety Pick award is only given to vehicles that receive a Good or Superior rating in all areas that have been previously discussed.

Determining If Ford Is a Safer Make in 2017 for Large Trucks

The truck that you decide to buy can play a major role in your own safety as well as in the safety of other passengers in the vehicle with you.

Some safety features in today’s top models are designed to help prevent an accident, and others are designed to keep you safe from harm if you are involved in an accident.

While both Ford and Honda trucks had a few similar rankings in some areas, Honda ranking notably high in critical areas.

For example, while Ford received low marks for front crash prevention, headlights, and latches, Honda received good or superior marks in these and in all other areas rated.

However, there are more Ford truck models to choose from.
