Safety Ratings for the Honda Ridgeline and the Dodge Ram

Honda and Dodge are two of the more popular vehicle brands that make at least one large truck model, and you may be wondering if you should buy a 2017 Ridgeline or a new Ram truck.

While many truck buyers may assume that the safety ratings for Dodge and Honda trucks would be similar, you may be surprised to learn that only one of these trucks ranks well in each of the eight IIHS safety categories.

Exploring the Details of the 2017 Large Trucks Safety Ratings

Altogether, IIHS reviewed and rated a dozen vehicles in the large truck category for 2017. Of these 12 vehicles reviewed, the 2017 Dodge Ram quad cab and crew cab were compared against the 2017 Honda Ridgeline.

By understanding the details of these safety ratings, you may be able to more easily decide which truck to purchase.

There are three main safety categories that vehicles are rated under:

  • crashworthiness
  • crash avoidance and mitigation
  • LATCH

These primary categories are broken into eight sub-categories.

Crashworthiness

Under Crashworthiness, there are five sub-categories which each describe the vehicle’s capabilities for protecting occupants during a collision.

Notably, the quad cab and the crew cab versions of the 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 share the exact same ratings for all eight of the IIHS safety categories.

Both of these popular Dodge models qualified for a “good” rating in the areas of Side, Head Restraints and Seat, and Front Moderate Overlap. They also qualified for only a marginal rating in the areas of Roof Strength and Front Small Overlap.

The Ridgeline ranked “good” in each of these sub-categories.

Crash Avoidance and Mitigation

Under Crash Avoidance and Mitigation, there are two sub-sections which each describe the vehicle’s capabilities for reducing the severity or altogether preventing a collision.

The two Ram models were not rated under the category of Front Crash Prevention, and they had a “marginal” Headlights rating. The “Ridgeline” had a Front Crash Prevention rating of superior and a “good” Headlight rating.

Child Seat Anchors (LATCH)

LATCH ratings describe how easy the child safety seat anchors are to use in each vehicle rated, and this category should be especially important to you if you plan to drive with young children in your truck.

The two Dodge Ram trucks rated “marginal” for LATCH. The Ridgeline received an “average” rating.

2017 Top Safety Pick and/or 2017 Top Safety Pick+

Each year, the IIHS selects a Top Safety Pick for qualifying models in each category. In the large truck category for 2017, the Honda Ridgeline was selected for this honor.

One reason for this is because the Ridgeline is the only truck to earn good marks in most areas, and it is also the only truck to have a “superior” rank for the Front Crash Prevention category.

For truck buyers who are most concerned about safety over other criteria, the Ridgeline may be the right truck to purchase.

Choosing Either a Dodge Ram or a Honda Ridgeline

The Honda Ridgeline and Dodge Ram are only a few of the many large truck models on the market in 2017, and you may want to review the safety ratings of other trucks before you decide which model to buy.

When you have narrowed down your options to either a Ram or a Ridgeline, you should look beyond safety ratings alone to make a thorough, educated decision.

Be aware that other factors, such as cost, reliability, and fuel economy, are also important factors that could influence your upcoming buying decision, and you should analyze all relevant factors in order to find the right new truck to buy.
