Safety Ratings for the Nissan Titan and the Dodge Ram Trucks

If you are like many other truck buyers, you are drawn to the Nissan and Dodge truck models because of their impressive, eye-catching style and thoughtful features. Both the Titan and Ram are powerful, dependable trucks, but they differ in the area of safety.

The IIHS has compared these models as well as nine other large truck models against each other, and you should take the time to explore these safety ratings in detail before you finalize your truck buying plans.

There are a total of three primary groups analyzed by the IIHS, and these are divided into eight sub-groups. The primary groups are:

  • Crashworthiness
  • Crash Avoidance and Mitigation

For most of the eight safety sub-categories that IIHS has analyzed large truck models for, it has provided a rating that ranges from “poor” on the low end to “good” on the high end.

For the category of Front Crash Prevention, its rating ranges from “basic” on the low end to “superior” on the high end.

Crashworthiness is an area that indicates how significantly a truck can protect its occupants from harm or injuries in a collision.

The 2017 Titan ranked “marginal” for Front Small Overlap, and it ranked “good” in the areas of Side, Roof Strength, Front Moderate Overlap, and Head Restraints and Seats.

The Dodge Ram quad cab and crew cab models had a “marginal” rating for Roof Strength and Front Small Overlap, and they both had a “good” rating for the other categories listed here.

Crash Avoidance and Mitigation

Crash Avoidance and Mitigation is an area that shows how well a truck may be able to prevent an accident or reduce its overall severity.

The 2017 Nissan Titan and the two Dodge Ram models reviewed did not receive a rating from the IIHS for the Front Crash Prevention section. All three vehicles had a “marginal” rate for Headlights.

The LATCH category reviews the ease of use for child safety seat anchors.

The Titan model for 2017 earned an “average” rating under the LATCH category. The Ram quad cab and crew cab models rated “marginal” in this area.

2017 Top Safety Pick and/or 2017 Top Safety Pick+

The IIHS reviews many classes of vehicles each year, and for each class or group, it selects at least one standout model to receive the recognition of the Top Safety Pick award.

In the large truck category for 2017, neither the Dodge Ram nor the Nissan Titan received this recognition.

The Honda Ridgeline was honored with this award.

While truck buyers who are most concerned about safety may be leaning heavily toward buying the Ridgeline, keep in mind that there are several other factors that should be taken into account as well before you fully decide which truck model to purchase.

Comparing the Nissan Titan against the Dodge Ram

While the Honda Ridgeline clearly is superior to the Titan and the Ram in the area of safety, this is only one of the multiple factors that you need to review before you make your buying decision.

For example, the cost of the models, as well as the value or quality of the standard features available for the price, should be reviewed.

You may also be concerned about fuel economy, consumer ratings, and many other relevant factors, and you should carefully research each of your criteria to make the selection that is best for you.

You may have plans to drive the new truck that you are about to purchase for several years or longer, and you want to choose a truck that is dependable and that meets all of your needs.

However, you also need the truck to be affordable, and this means that you must compare truck insurance costs before you make your buying decision. Enter your zip code below to compare quotes for free right here.
