  • While there are a few differences in safety ratings, the Toyota Tundra and Dodge Ram have very similar safety ratings
  • Analyzing the IIHS safety ratings for 2017 large trucks could help you to make a more informed truck buying decision
  • Safety ratings from the IIHS and other safety data could play a role in your auto insurance cost.

With several incredible models of large pickup trucks available to choose from at local dealerships, it can be hard to decide which truck is right for you.

If you are like most potential truck buyers, you may be leaning toward a couple of models because of their combined look, power, and reputation.

While these are important factors to pay attention to when you are preparing to buy a new truck, the issue of safety should be closely reviewed as well.

Each year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety / Highway Data Loss Institute reviews different categories of vehicles and publishes its findings.

One of the categories of vehicles that it reviewed for 2017 is the large truck group. This includes the Dodge Ram, Toyota Tundra, and several other leading models. Make sure to compare rates with our free quote tool above!

While many of the trucks that were reviewed by IIHS received mediocre or low ratings in some areas, some of the trucks performed very well in the area of safety.

Safety Ratings for the Dodge Ram Truck and the Toyota Tundra Truck

The IIHS analyzed the 2017 Toyota Tundra as well as the 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 crew cab model and quad cab model.

By reviewing the IIHS safety ratings that were published for large pickup trucks, you may be able to determine which trucks are safer for you and your loved ones to drive in.

Moreover, because safety results are reviewed by auto insurance providers when you request a premium quote, reviewing the IIHS safety ratings could potentially help you to save money on your truck insurance for years to come.

How the Safety Ratings for the Toyota Tundra and Dodge Ram Stack Up

Altogether, the IIHS reviewed and analyzed a dozen large truck models in 2017, and it rated them each across eight unique categories in three primary groups, which are Crashworthiness, Crash Avoidance and Mitigation, and Latch.

For most categories, the rating system is as follows:

  • good
  • acceptable
  • marginal
  • poor

However, for the Front Crash Prevention safety section, the ratings ran from basic to superior.

Crashworthiness

This category has five sub-sections, and it indicates the vehicle’s ability to protect passengers from injuries in a collision event.

All three vehicles received the highest possible rating of “good” in the categories of Head Restraints and Seats, Side, and Front Moderate Overlap.

They also all received a “marginal” rating for Front Small Overlap, which is the second-lowest rating possible. For Roof Strength, the two Rams have “marginal” ratings, and the Tundra had an “average” rating.

Crash Avoidance and Mitigation

None of the three trucks were analyzed in the area of Front Crash Prevention.

For the Headlights section, the two Ram models had a “marginal” rating. The Tundra had a “poor” Headlights rating.

Child Seat Anchor LATCH

The LATCH safety section in the IIHS ratings is relevant to you if you intend to use car seats in your truck. It explores the ease of use of the anchors or latches in the truck.

Both Ram models that were reviewed by IIHS had a “marginal” rating for the LATCH category. The Tundra, on the other hand, had an “average” rank for this category.

2017 Top Safety Pick and/or 2017 Top Safety Pick+

Most of the trucks that were reviewed by the IIHS for safety analysis had “poor” or “marginal” results in at least a few safety categories.

Neither the Toyota or Dodge models analyzed by the IIHS for 2017 had high enough safety ratings to qualify for one of these titles.

Is Ram Safer Than Toyota for Large Trucks?

While both the Dodge Ram and Toyota Tundra trucks fell short in several safety areas, the Toyota Tundra models had higher overall ratings based on IIHS test results.

In fact, the Dodge Ram models analyzed ranked in the bottom of the list for all models reviewed in this class. Keep in mind that two Ram models and two Toyota models were reviewed.

Nonetheless, safety is not the only factor that you should base your upcoming buying decision on. Be aware that each of these pickup truck models varies regarding customer satisfaction, reliability, engine power, payload, cost, and other factors.

All factors that are relevant to you should be reviewed together so that you can make the most informed decision possible.
