Drunk Driving Laws

In July of 2010, the drunk driving laws became more strict throughout the state of Wisconsin. Four key changes were made to the already existing law.

  • If you are caught driving drunk for the fourth time within 5 years of your last offense, it will be considered a felony.
  • If you are convicted of driving even once with a blood alcohol level of 0.15 or above, an ignition interlocks device will be required.
  • There will be more focus on the treatment of these drivers in order to help reduce future offenses.
  • The offense will be increased in severity if a person under 16 years of age is in the vehicle at the time of the offense.

Minimum Car Insurance Requirements

Are you required to have car insurance in Wisconsin? On November 1st, 2009, the laws in Wisconsin changed to make car insurance in Milwaukee a greater expense. In January of 2010, there were a few more changes and then, in June of 2010, the laws changed again.

Frequent changes in the laws have confused and frustrated the residents.

The minimum requirements listed are listed below:

  • $10,000 is the minimum car insurance required for damage to property.
  • $25,000 is the minimum amount to provide for injury or death to a single person.
  • $50,000 is the minimum to provide for injury or death to 2 or more persons.

Proof of Car Insurance Requirements

In June of 2010, Wisconsin law began to require proof of car insurance from vehicle owners/drivers when being stopped by an officer for a traffic violation or at the scene of an accident. This rule does not apply to semi-trailer trucks.

  • If you don’t have insurance, you may be fined up to $500.
  • Drivers/Owners that cannot show proof of insurance when asked may be fined $10.
  • Showing fraudulent proof of insurance may incur a fine of up to $5,000.

In general, when applying for car registration or a driver’s license, Milwaukee auto insurance is not required. The State of Wisconsin, in some ways, is a bit more lenient for auto insurance requirements.

However, you should be sure you comply completely to avoid breaking the law and incurring any fines or penalties.

This may be a good deal for you, but sometimes it is not. This will require you to do some comparison shopping and to refuse the first, second or even third offer you are given.

Milwaukee car insurance is just like purchasing insurance in any other place and requires a diligent and judicious shopper.

  • Allstate Insurance
  • American Family Insurance
  • Geico
  • Liberty Mutual

Keep in mind while shopping for insurance that not all insurance companies are equal when it comes to car insurance. Some companies will focus on a certain segment of the population and offer special packages or deals to only them.

The other drivers may not benefit from this special package and may be forced to pay a higher price.

Because of this, rates will vary from company to company, so try to find a company that has special packages designed to meet your requirements, or is the best rated car insurance company in your area.
