History of Montgomery Transit

Montgomery was on the cutting edge of transportation in the United States. It was in this city that the Electric Trolley System was introduced to the country in 1886.

The result of this trolley system was to spread the population out from deep within the city toward the outer areas. The city could then be less congested, and Montgomery was able to begin building up a large suburban area.

The trolley system lasted for exactly 50 years. It was the transportation system that made Montgomery a huge part of American history; this is where the beginning of the end of segregation took place.

The trolley system had been segregated by law in 1906 after the streetcar boycotts. After 1936 when the trolley was replaced by buses, segregation continued until Rosa Parks entered the scene.

In a movement led by the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Montgomery Bus Boycott began which led to the end of segregation of public transportation.

Modern Montgomery Car Insurance Laws

The modern Montgomery car insurance laws don’t exclude anyone. Everyone has the obligation to purchase liability coverage equal to 25/50/25.

Drivers must also be able to prove that they have liability coverage when they are being stopped for a moving violation or any other reason.

Although the laws are easily understood, some drivers like to take chances that they won’t get caught driving without Montgomery car insurance.

This may not be the wisest choice to make because they will receive consequences for violating Montgomery’s driving laws.

Penalties for Driving without Montgomery Car Insurance

In Alabama, there are penalties for drivers caught without auto insurance:

  1. Drivers who fail to purchase liability coverage will have their registrations suspended.
  2. To have their registrations reinstated, they must purchase liability coverage.
  3. The first time they are cited for driving without Montgomery car insurance, they will have to pay a $100 fee to reinstate the registration.
  4. After a second citation for driving without insurance, Montgomery drivers will have to wait four months before they can reinstate their registrations.
  5. After four months, they can seek to reinstate their registrations for a fee of $200.

What Is the Required Liability Coverage in Montgomery?

AdobeStock_70412977-1600x1600

Montgomery car insurance companies will sell liability coverage that ensures their drivers are in compliance with Montgomery laws. This means that if they cause an accident, their bodily injury liability coverage will have $25,000 to cover one person’s medical bills.

As more than one person may be hurt in the accident and need to seek medical attention, limits have been set on how much bodily injury coverage must be purchased to cover everyone hurt in the accident.

In Montgomery, this amount is equal to $50,000.

All types of property can be damaged in a car collision, and this can include animals. If the vehicles were to crash onto a farm and hit and kill the livestock, the at-fault driver would need to pay the farmer for the lost cattle.

They would also have to repair the damage done to the fence as well as the landscaping. For purposes such as these, Montgomery drivers need to have property damage liability coverage in the amount of $25,000.

How Much Does Montgomery Car Insurance Cost?

When people in Montgomery seek a quote for auto insurance, they can expect it to be around the average of $1,412, but this doesn’t have to be the end of the story.

Each individual Montgomery car insurance company has car insurance discounts for their clients for different reasons, and these clients may be able to qualify for any number of them.

Are You Free of Accidents?

Car accident on the street.

Some Montgomery car insurance companies have what is called the accident-free discount. Drivers entitled to this discount haven’t had an accident that they caused in at least three years.

If these people have purchased a new car, they may qualify for the new car discount that some Montgomery car insurance agencies offer.

Do You Drive an Economy Car?

If the vehicle can be classified as an economy car, drivers may be able to receive a discount for it.

Economy vehicles cost the insurance companies much less because their parts aren’t as expensive and they don’t cost as much to repair if they are damaged in a collision.

Are You a Good Driver?

Being a good driver, of course, helps people to qualify for the good driver discount. The qualifications will be different for different Montgomery car insurance companies, but people can expect to be required to not have any at-fault accidents on their driving records.

They may also have to have a driving record without any traffic tickets within a certain period of time, usually three years.

How Many Claims Were Filed in the Past?

It pays to be a good driver because Montgomery car insurance companies would like to spend the least amount of money paying claims as possible.

Those who are only filing claims for their insurance coverage when the amount needed to repair their vehicles is a lot higher than their deductibles will file fewer claims.

Those who file the least claims receive a reduction in their Montgomery car insurance rates.

How Montgomery Car Insurance Agencies Decide How Much to Charge

When Montgomery car insurance agencies sell auto insurance to their residents, they are going to look into each client’s backgrounds for anything that will tell them how much of a chance the potential client has to file a claim.

Everything is important to these agencies from the type of work these potential clients do to the type of vehicle that they are seeking to insure.

City or Rural?

AdobeStock_46354933-1600x1600

One determining factor in how likely someone will be to file a claim is whether or not the client lives in a big city or a rural area.

When Montgomery car insurance companies know that someone will be driving in a metropolitan area such as Montgomery, they may decide that they need to charge a higher rate.

If the risk of being in a car accident is higher with so many more vehicles in close proximity, Montgomery car insurance companies may decide to charge higher rates.

But in the case of the city of Montgomery, the above scenario isn’t necessarily true.

The Zip Codes Can Be the Determining Factor

The reason that Montgomery car insurance agencies aren’t seeing the need to charge their clients the highest rates is because they are placing more weight on the zip code than on the fact that Montgomery is a large city with a large population.

Montgomery car insurance agencies know which zip codes have the fewest accidents, and people driving in those zip codes receive low rates on car insurance even though they are driving in a big city.

Low Fatalities in Montgomery

The number of accidents resulting in fatalities also plays a role in determining Montgomery car insurance rates. In Montgomery in 2009, there was a total of 11 accidents that resulted in fatalities.

Out these 11 accidents, 13 deaths occurred. Three out of the 11 accidents were caused by people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

With low car accident numbers such as these, Montgomery car insurance companies aren’t particularly motivated to charge exorbitantly high rates.
