Here's what you need to know...

  • Your job affects your premiums directly
  • Technicians typically possess several positive attributes that reflect in their insurance premiums
  • Technician is a term that encompasses many different fields of work
  • Stress leads to poor driving

If you work as a technician of any sort, it’s likely that your annual auto insurance rates are somewhere in the neighborhood of $1160 at least according to a recent industry survey ranking 60 of the most common job categories in America.

Your ranking was 35th least expensive, and in the same company as construction workers, clerical and office workers, and individuals with no college degree.

Car insurance companies ask us a lot of information before they present us with a quote. While some of these questions may seem irrelevant to the topic at hand, they really aren’t.

All of the information they’re asking for will somehow be plugged into a complicated formula that ends up determining what each of us will pay for a policy.

One of those questions what we do for a living is part of the overall equation.

Occupation and Driver Safety

If you asked them, car insurance companies would argue that the characteristics and personality traits required for specific types of work can also play out in a person’s behavior behind the wheel.

Stress levels also play a big part, and we know that some occupations are significantly more stressful than others. That’s why information about our occupations is so important to our car insurance carriers.

They know there is a strong correlation between occupation and driving safety.

Just as an example, scientists have among the lowest annual insurance rates of all the country’s major occupations. The previously mentioned survey ranked them least expensive with an annual premium of less than $1000.

The reasoning behind this is the fact that scientists tend to be more analytical, less likely to take major risks, and more apt to look for ways to drive safer and more efficiently.

If we do a similar assessment of technicians, we see a very different picture. First of all, the category of “technician” is so broad that it includes everything from medical technicians to automotive technicians to computer technicians.

Yet despite their specialties, there are some personality traits that you find pretty prevalent among these types of workers. Some of those personality traits include a natural tendency to focus on one thing at a time and a go-getter spirit that strives to accomplish.

These are workers who might be a little edgier than your average accountant but not as wild as your average punk rock star.

Does stress affect driving?

As we said earlier, stress plays a big factor in how well you or I perform behind the wheel.

In a high-stress environment, we are more likely to leave work completely stressed ourselves, thus posing a danger to other drivers on the road. Stress can lead to the following:

  • Aggressive driving
  • Careless driving
  • Delayed reaction times
  • Ultimately accidents

Fortunately, most technicians are not subjected to extremely stressful environments and as a result, are not as prone to driving while stressed, compared to other more demanding occupations.

On the other hand, technicians might be more prone to filing accident claims even for the most minor of fender benders.

In the mind of a technician, there’s usually only one right way to do things and it’s his job to teach the rest of the world. This type of personality may tend to think that filing a claim is absolutely necessary.

Adaptability

A positive personality trait of the technician is his natural tendency to adapt. Being adaptable is vital to being a successful technician because you can never know what specific issues are going to arise on any given day.

This adaptable nature may make them more prone to avoiding high traffic volumes during rush hour or even staying out of congested areas completely.

Finally, technicians are more apt to carpool then some other workers because they understand the importance of efficiency.

As a technician, you probably enjoy the constantly changing environment in which you work.

If you’re good at what you do, you’re able to adapt, overcome, and make the best of whatever your job throws at you.

All of these personality traits work together to help keep your car insurance rates at a competitive level.
