Here's what you need to know...

  • Tesla is famous for being a creative and innovative car manufacturer
  • Their company focus is producing electric vehicles that help to cut down on pollution
  • Tesla recently announced plans for the production of an electric pickup truck

Tesla’s mission statement states that the company desires to “accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” Due to the execution of this vision, Tesla has gained a reputation for being one of the foremost innovative car manufacturers.

The company also offers solar panels to help reduce the homeowner’s energy usage, but the electric cars are what makes Tesla so well-known.

Tesla is not the only company producing electric vehicles, but they have become famous for making electric vehicles that consumers actually want to purchase. Tesla vehicles are attractive, modernly updated, and obviously environmentally friendly. Perhaps the biggest drawback of Tesla cars is the high price tag.

Despite the expensive cost of Tesla vehicles, every time a new product is announced, consumers react with great enthusiasm and anticipation. In 2017, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled another of the company’s new products, a semi-truck that strives to positively impact the freight industry.

Tesla Pickup Truck Announced

One major characteristic of Tesla is their promise to use advanced technology in their vehicles to make them more environmentally friendly. Sometimes the process from announcement to unveiling takes longer than expected, but Tesla has so far managed to keep their customers happy regardless of the long wait for a new product.

In June 2018, Elon Musk once again excited his Twitter fans by announcing plans for the production of a Tesla pickup truck. In the Tesla pickup truck reveal he asked for his followers’ input on what features they’d like to see most in such a vehicle.

His Twitter followers offered suggestions such as a high mileage charge (400-500 miles per charge), rear cameras in tail lights to mitigate the risk of backup blind spots, a ladder (for the ease of shorter truck drivers) that folds into the tailgate, and the ability for the trucks to recharge other Tesla vehicles that have run out of power.

Tesla Truck Features

After the initial Tweet asking for suggestions about features to include on Tesla’s pickup truck, Musk confirmed a couple of different features that will be standard on the vehicle. These features include parts for the engine as well as bodywork.

Several features that Musk confirmed were things that customers had suggested, so he obviously knows a few things about what pickup truck drivers look for in their vehicles.

 Engine and Power Capabilities

What can the Tesla truck do? Musk assured followers that, “The Tesla Truck will have dual motor all-wheel drive w crazy torque & a suspension that dynamically adjusts for load. Those will be standard.”

Regarding the truck’s electric charge capabilities, Musk tweeted, “Pickup truck will have power outlets allowing use of heavy duty 240V, high power tools in field all day. No generator needed.”

Truck drivers should love the idea of not having to haul around a generator to charge their vehicle in case of a breakdown!

The towing capability of a pickup truck is also extremely important. So to know that Musk is developing features to ensure that the truck is able to safely tow a large amount of cargo should be reassuring.

The Tesla semi is a good example of how the Tesla vision for innovation can provide vast improvements to even commercial vehicles.

According to Tesla, their empty semi can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in five seconds and in 20 seconds if loaded to the maximum amount of 80,000. The semi is also expected to be able to travel 500 miles on a single charge.

Based on the performance tests of the Tesla semi truck, the pickup truck model can be expected to include the power and grit of a regular pickup truck as well as having an improved, Tesla design.

Checking out the impressive stats of the Tesla semi truck, it is easy to imagine how efficient and powerful Tesla could make a regular pickup truck.

 Physical Appearance

One Twitter follower expressed concern that a good pickup truck may be “too rugged” for Tesla. He questioned, “Isn’t the Tesla a bit premium?”

True to his reputation as an innovative and creative thinker, Musk responded that he hopes the production of a pickup “messes with their brand. Brands suck.”

Perhaps once Tesla has come out with a pickup truck model, the public opinion on the image of pickups in general will change to become more sophisticated rather than the rusticness of pickups dragging down the high-luxury image of Tesla.

Musk assures the public that the Tesla model “will look like a truck.” He understands that most drivers of pickup trucks are not extremely interested in having a vehicle that looks like something out of a science fiction novel, so Musk promises that the Tesla truck will stay true to the typical pickup truck image.

— Parking Assistance Features

Musk also said that other features of the truck will include the ability to automatically parallel park plus cameras with 360 view as well as sonar capabilities.

Pickup trucks are larger than normal vehicles and can sometimes be rather difficult to maneuver.

However, all three of these features should help the driver to feel at ease in difficult parking situations such as parallel parking on crowded city streets or backing up with the regular blind spots when trying to hunt for a spot in a parking lot.

Tesla Technology in a Pickup Truck

Pickup trucks have been popular choices for American drivers for several years. In fact, Ford’s F-150 has been the number one vehicle sold in the U.S. for over 30 years and has been the number one truck sold for over 40 years. Ford seems to have mastered the art of producing pickup trucks.

Such statistics beg the question, what can Tesla do to surpass the competition provided by Ford?

For starters, Tesla vehicles have become famous for being physically attractive. Tesla vehicles are futuristic and sleek in appearance, a showcase to Tesla’s mission of using technology to manufacture cars that run on sustainable energy and yet are still appealing to consumers.

Tesla faces the challenge of making sure their technology translates into a desirable pickup truck. Combining Tesla’s typical luxurious appearances with the ruggedness of the American pickup truck will surely provide an interesting final product.

Perhaps one of the most wanted features in Tesla pickup truck interior is having back seats. Pickup trucks are often used for work vehicles, but having the extra seating is always a plus.

Having the ability to have extra passengers can only make a Tesla pickup truck even more appealing. Having a Tesla vehicle is a reason for some showing off, and how can you do that without seats for more people in your vehicle?

Another famous feature of Tesla vehicles is their self-driving tech. Tesla vehicles have Enhanced Autopilot which enables the vehicles to match the speed of traffic, automatically change lanes, and exit the highway without driver input. These automatic features can be expected to appear in the Tesla pickup truck model as well.

A secondary consideration of self-driving vehicles is the network security for autopilot features. In order for a vehicle to use capabilities of sensing traffic patterns and therefore making informed decisions, there has to be some kind of wireless network involved.

Hacking a wireless network is a very real concern today, so Tesla must ensure that the networks used in their vehicles are as safe as possible from cyber attacks and that their customers know common sense safety to protect their vehicles.
