  • There are plenty of factors that can cause a higher car insurance rate
  • On the other hand, there are also ways you can combat a factor’s negative effect on your car insurance

If you live in Pennsylvania and are looking for cheap car insurance there are a number of things you should know. If you drive in the state, you are required to carry insurance, but it doesn’t have to cost a lot.

There are a variety of ways to find cheap car insurance but you need to know what to look for and where to look.

Several factors go into calculating car insurance rates so what you pay for a policy can be quite different from another driver your same age.

Car Insurance Requirements in PA

According to PA’s State Insurance Department, insurance is mandatory for every driver in the state.

If you are pulled over and found to be driving without proof of car insurance, your license and/or registration may be suspended. This suspension may be waived if you are able to prove that the vehicle was not driven for 30 days or less.

The Department of Transportation decides what the consequences are for driving without insurance. Along with suspension of your license and registration, your license plate may need to be surrendered to the state.

Once your suspension period is over, you will need to prove you have purchased insurance and pay fees and fines in order to be able to return to driving.

Pennsylvania has mandated which types of car insurance coverage you need to carry in order to drive. Although you must have these on your policy, there are other options that you can add to supplement your coverage.

As with the majority of states, Pennsylvania requires that you carry a minimum of liability insurance.

You will need to carry liability coverage for damage to both property and bodily injury.

Property damage coverage helps to cover damage that is done to someone else’s property from an accident that you caused, while bodily injuries help to cover medical expenses as well as rehabilitation expenses.

For both types of liability insurance, the state requires that you carry a minimum limit for each. For property damage, you must carry a minimum of $5,000 in coverage, which refers to the maximum amount that the insurance company will pay.

For bodily injury liability in PA, you must carry at least $15,000 in coverage for one person and $30,000 for the total accident.

In Pennsylvania, you must also carry medical benefits coverage. This coverage includes medical expenses for the driver and passengers in your car, no matter who caused the accident. You must carry at least $5,000 of coverage.

You must also carry some type of tort coverage, either limited or full. If you choose limited tort, you will not be able to recover certain types of damages from an accident, such as pain and suffering payments. You still will be able to collect payment for medical expenses, however.

Because Pennsylvania is a tort state, if you choose a full tort, you can sue the other party at fault for any expenses you feel you deserve without limits.

Compensation can include medical expenses, pain, and suffering payments, and other related expenses.

Average Car Insurance Rates in PA

Although your goal may be to find cheap car insurance rates, how much you actually will pay will be relative according to the state you live in.

In general, car insurance rates in Pennsylvania fall around the national average. It depends on where in the state you reside, as well as the year and even month that you purchase insurance.

For the average driver, car insurance in Pennsylvania can range anywhere from $1,675 to $2,000.

If you are just getting coverage to meet the state requirements, the average falls around $1,400. Rates can change from month-to-month and can either increase or decrease from year-to-year.

Most of the changes are based on driving statistics in the state.

Factors in Determining Car Insurance Rates

There are a lot of factors that go into figuring out rates for car insurance. Statistics of drivers in the state are one factor, but rates are determined more by the age and history of each individual driver.

Your age plays a big role in car insurance rates. According to the Institute for Insurance Information, the age ranges of those with the highest insurance rates are those under the age of 25.

Rates also tend to be higher for those drivers who are over the age of 65, which is due to:

  • Failing eyesight
  • Lack of perception
  • Deteriorating mental state
  • Lack of knowledge of new traffic rules

Gender plays a factor in insurance rates as well. In general, females pay less for car insurance than males do. This is because, statistically, women have less serious accidents, get fewer DUIs, and have fewer accidents than men do.

The type of car you drive as well as how often you drive it will affect your car insurance rates.

A flashy sports car will be more expensive to insure than a mid-sized family sedan as statistics have shown that sports cars are involved in more serious accidents.

You will pay more if you drive more, as there are more chances for an accident or another incident to happen.

Your credit history will affect your car insurance rates. If you have a high credit score, your rates will be lower. If you have not been responsible financially, and your credit score is low, expect to pay higher rates.

The biggest determinant in car insurance rates is your driving history. A person with a record of accidents and major or minor traffic violations will pay a lot more than a person who has a clean record.

New drivers will also pay more due to their lack of experience.

Where to Find Cheap Car Insurance in PA

There is a bunch of different ways to find cheap car insurance. One of the top ways to compare car insurance is by using a site like this one, in which you can get instant rate quotes from a number of companies, and it is free to use.

The nice thing about quote websites is that they save you a lot of time.

You will need to take a little time to answer all of the information about your vehicle, driving history, and which types of coverage you want to have on your policy, but you only have to do that once.

When you have finished you should get quotes back from companies that can help you within 10 to 20 minutes, if not sooner.

Once you have rate quotes from at least three providers, you will need to make a decision on which one to use. Don’t choose an insurance company just because it gives the cheapest rate quote.

How to Choose the Right Car Insurance Company

Choosing a car insurance provider just because it offers the lowest rate quote could mean trouble down the road. Some cheaper companies are legitimate and reputable companies, but some are not.

You want to make sure that you choose a company that is licensed to sell insurance in Pennsylvania or whichever state you live in, and one with a good reputation.

Make sure that the company you choose is financially stable. Visit sites of companies such as Standard and Poor’s or A.M. Best to see how each insurance company rates financially and what their outlooks are for the future.

You should also choose a company that will pay for the claims that you file. Some companies will advertise cheap rates but then take advantage of you later by fighting claims, settling at low amounts, or other shady practices.

Check with the state insurance department to make sure there are no complaints against the companies and if so, what they are for.

How to Keep Car Insurance Rates Low

Although there are certain things that are out of your control when it comes to insurance rates, there are some things that you can do to make sure you are getting the lowest rate with the best company.

The cheapest auto insurance policies are going to be those with just the basic requirements. The coverage that is mandated by Pennsylvania will help cover a number of scenarios, which may be enough for what you need.

For a slightly higher premium, however, it would be a good idea to increase the limit amounts associated with your policy.

Keeping your driving record clean is one of the paramount ways to keep your rates low, as this is a big factor.

Take a class if you need to in order to improve your driving. Most violations will be cleared off your record after a period of three years so you can start fresh.

Work on keeping or getting your credit up. If you have a poor credit history, it is possible to improve it over time.

The website for MyFICO can help you out with tips like fighting inaccurate information on your credit report, how your credit is calculated, and factors that do or do not affect your credit.

Another way to lower your insurance rates, even if you choose additional types of coverage such as collision and comprehensive, is to ask your agent about discounts.

Many insurance companies offer discounts for a variety of things and if you are eligible you may be able to save some money.
