If you are planning on hiring someone who is going to build your tiny house, you won’t have to worry about buying your own insurance policy. Builders come with their own insurance, and it will cover the materials as well as liability.

A reputable builder will also be bonded so you can feel confident they are going to do the work you want them to do.

Choosing an RVIA builder will provide you with even more benefits, but they are required to have certain levels of coverage depending on the tiny house they’re building.

Building Your Own

If you want to save money on building your tiny house, you can build it yourself. Plans are usually fairly cheap for tiny houses and they are easy for even novices to build.

You will still need insurance while you’re building, though. The insurance you carry should cover your materials and any liability you have while you’re building.

You would probably be amazed at how many people will want to look at and visit your property while you’re building the tiny house. If you’re not covered and something happens to them, you could end up shelling out hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Coverage during Towing


Once your house is done being built and its wheels are down, you’ll need to cover it for the towing time. Most tiny houses use policies that are related to RV coverage, but you’ll need to consider the way your home was built when you’re shopping around for different policies.


When you hire a RVIA certified builder, your home will be considered an RV. This can help you find a great place to keep the home, can give you other benefits and will allow you to use RV insurance.

Georgia insurance agents have RV insurance policies you can choose from.

Depending on what you have in your tiny house and what the value of the tiny house is, you can choose coverage to customize it to everything you need in your tiny house.

No matter what you have in your home, as long as it was built by RVIA standards, you will be able to take advantage of RV insurance. RV insurance is different from tow vehicle insurance which requires you to have $50,000 to cover liability for an accident.



If you plan on building your tiny house yourself, you’ll have to compare different coverage options for your tiny house. You cannot take advantage of RV insurance as long as your tiny house is certified as an RV.

You will be within codes if you take your tiny house to mobile home parks and campgrounds, but you may not comply if you are parking it on land in a city. Consider these issues when you choose the coverage for your home.

If you own land outside of a city and you have some way to get electricity and plumbing to the home without interrupting service of other customers, it will be in the gray area.

Since it falls into a gray area, you may be fine on your own piece of land. If you are keeping your tiny house on this land, get a homeowner’s insurance policy.

If you’ll be staying at mobile home parks, campgrounds or anywhere that the right to the land is rented, you can benefit from renter’s insurance. It will cover the following:

  • theft of your belongings
  • fires
  • natural disasters

Neither coverage option will cover theft of the actual tiny home while it is parked as that will fall under your towing coverage.
