  • Car insurance is required in almost every state, plus it’s wise to buy because it saves you from financial liability
  • You can get quotes from independent agents
  • You can get quotes online from car insurance websites and from comparison websites

In the United States, 48 states require minimum insurance to drive legally and register your car.

Additionally, auto insurance protects you from financial liability if you are involved in an accident by paying for repairs and medical expenses for injuries that are received if you are found responsible for the accident. Although car insurance is important, it can be expensive.

There are ways to keep your insurance rates down and compare car insurance rates between companies.

Independent Auto Insurance Brokers

One place to look for car insurance premium quotes is an independent car insurance broker or agent. Most independent agents and brokers represent multiple insurance companies, so they are a good source for rate quotes.

One of the benefits of working with an independent agent is that they often will take the time to talk to you about your insurance needs and educate you about the differences between each type of auto insurance.

They can also save you money by offering suggestions about discounts and by reviewing your insurance rates each time your policy comes up for renewal.

Insurance Company Websites

Another source for insurance policy rate quotes is car insurance company websites. Most car insurance companies now have a corporate website that provides you with a great deal of information about the insurance company.

You can learn about their history and where they provide services. You can also learn about other kinds of insurance they offer, such as homeowners, rental and life insurance.

A number of insurance companies also offer financial services which you can take advantage of if you decide to use their services.

In most cases, you can request a car insurance policy quote online from the insurance company corporate website. You may be contacted by an agent or customer service representative to verify personal information or to gather additional information needed for underwriting a policy.

Insurance Comparison Websites

You can also receive multiple policy rate quotes from car insurance company websites. These websites have insurance companies and independent agents who contract with the website for leads for people interested in auto insurance.

You will need to enter your information one time and will receive quotes from several companies. In some cases, you will receive an immediate quote on the website. In other cases, you will receive an email or telephone call regarding auto insurance coverage.

Insurance comparison websites can also be an excellent source of information about other aspects of car insurance.

For example, many have articles on topics such as adding a teen driver to your car insurance policy, state mandatory insurance requirements, and other relevant information.

Methods to Lower Premiums

There are lots of ways to lower your auto insurance premium rates. One of the most obvious is through comparison shopping. This is something you should do each time your insurance policy comes up for renewal.

In many instances, if you work with an independent agent, they will automatically comparison shop for the best rates when your policy comes up for renewal. However, if you do not have an independent agent, this is something you will need to do on your own.

Another way to lower your car insurance premiums is to ask about discounts. Most car insurance companies offer discounts because they are aware that people want to save money on their insurance.

Common discounts are offered for the following:

  • insuring multiple cars on your policy
  • bundling other kinds of insurance with your auto insurance, such as rental or homeowners insurance
  • taking a defensive driving course
  • having a young adult or teenager with good grades
  • being a senior
  • being a longtime customer with an insurance company

Another way to lower your insurance rates is to choose higher deductible amounts. In most cases, the higher deductible you choose for your auto policy, the lower your policy rate will be.

You can take the money you save and set it aside to use if you have an accident and need to cover the deductible amount.

You can also save money by only buying auto insurance you really need.

If you have an older car, you probably do not really need to purchase collision coverage and can save yourself some money by not paying this premium amount.

This is because collision coverage will only pay you the value of your car if it is considered a total loss.

Since the value of your car dramatically decreases as it gets older, it can be very easy to have an accident where it will cost more money to repair it than it is worth. Instead of paying high premiums for collision coverage, take that money and save it to use if you need to buy a newer car.

Another way to save money on your auto insurance is to avoid purchasing or leasing a new car every few years. Auto insurance for new cars is extremely expensive. Instead, buy a car and keep it for many years or buy an older car and pay cash for it and avoid financing it.

If your car is financed, you will need to buy full coverage, including liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage.

Additionally, you should probably buy gap insurance while your car is financed. If your car is older and is not financed, you will only need to purchase the following:

  • liability
  • comprehensive
  • medical payment coverage

Although car insurance can be expensive, with a bit of smart shopping and a willingness to do a little legwork and ask some questions, you can probably lower your car insurance premiums.
