Here's what you need to know...

  • Many factors go into your car insurance premiums
  • In the UK, people are placed into insurance groups based on their risk
  • Statistics are collected and based on those, the insurance groups are formed
  • Your car is very important to your risk group

Many factors influence how expensive car insurance will be. One of the main factors is the type of car that is driven.

In order to improve the ease of classification for insurers, automobiles in the United Kingdom are divided into car insurance groups. The cost of insurance is determined by the group status.

If you are a driver in the UK or if you plan to get insurance there, knowing your car’s group is crucial. Even if you are not a driver in the UK, looking at the car insurance group classifications can give you a general indication of the relative expense of insuring different types of vehicles.

What Car Insurance Groups Mean

Before an insurance company will write you a car insurance policy, they will consider many factors to evaluate the amount of risk that they are taking. It is crucial for the company to understand the statistical likelihood of a claim in order to price the policy correctly.

In the UK, this study has been perfected to a science. Unlike in the United States, all makes and models of vehicles in the UK are classified into insurance groups based on their risk factors.

Recent studies by the Association of British Insurers have shown that approximately 50 percent of the cost of a car insurance claim is determined by the cost of repairs to a vehicle.

Therefore, understanding how expensive it is to repair a car plays a big part in how much an insurance policy costs.

It is also important to understand how likely it is that a car will be in an accident, and how expensive it will be to replace. For example, a sports car is statistically more likely to be involved in a traffic accident than a station wagon.

Additionally, it would certainly cost more to replace a Lamborghini than a Subaru!

Insurance experts compile all of the information about risk and use it to assign different makes and models of automobiles to what is called a car insurance group.

These groups are made up of the types of cars that have similar risk factors and expenses associated with insurance claims.

Insurers then use these groups to determine the cost of insurance for vehicles. Cars that are in the same group will generally have the same average costs to insure.

This is based solely on the vehicle factors and does not take into account other insurance factors such as the following:

The groups for car insurance used to range from one to 20. However, because there is now such a wide range of automobiles available, a new system has been introduced that spans from one to 50.

Cars in Group One are the least expensive to insure, and cars in Group 50 are the most expensive to insure.

Generally, cars in Group One are both very safe and fairly inexpensive. These are the cars that are least likely to be in an accident. If they are involved in an accident, they will be the cheapest to repair or replace.

Thus, cars in Group 50 would be expensive, rare automobiles that are costly to repair or replace.

How Groups Are Determined

In the auto insurance industry groups are determined by an association called the Association of British Insurers (ABI). The ABI makes this determination based on information collected by the Motor Insurance Repair Research Center, also called Thatcham.

Thatcham collects data on all types of vehicle accident statistics, such as:

  • car performance
  • car security
  • costs of parts and repairs
  • car values

All of this information is combined and analyzed to create a comprehensive risk analysis.

That risk analysis, in turn, drives the determination of the insurance group.

Popular Cars and Their Groups

Many drivers wonder what group their dream car would be classified under. Below is a list of some popular models of UK automobiles and their groups. Remember, the higher the group number, the more expensive the insurance will be.

  • Volkswagen Up – Group One
  • Chevrolet Spark – Group One
  • Fiat 500 – Group 12
  • Skoda Fabia – Group 12
  • Audi A3 – Group 24
  • Volkswagen Golf – Group 24
  • Mazda 3 – Group 24
  • BMW M5 – Group 50
  • Bentley (all models) – Group 50
  • Aston Martin (all models) – Group 50

As you can see, the car insurance group number is fairly intuitive based on the safety and value of the vehicle. The owner of an Aston Martin is not only paying a premium price for his or her automobile but also the highest car insurance cost.

Why It May Be Important to Know Your Car Insurance Group

The most obvious reason that it is important to know your car insurance group is so you can get a general idea of how much your insurance will cost. However, you will want to remember that your group is not the only factor that impacts your insurance.

Your personal risk factors and your driving record will also come into play. For example, if you have had many accidents and driving violations, even owning a group one car still may not win you as low of a premium as another driver who has had a safer record.

Your car insurance group is only one data point that goes into the comprehensive decision of the cost of your automobile insurance.

However, knowing your car insurance group can still tell you about more than just how much your insurance will cost.

In actuality, knowing your group also gives you a good sense of the cost of ownership of the vehicle.

The cost of parts and maintenance make up a large portion of the cost of ownership of a car. The reliability of the car dictates the frequency with which repairs will be needed, and is another important indicator of the cost of ownership of a vehicle.

How to Identify Your Car Insurance Group

AdobeStock_42729341-1600x1600

There is no reason that any driver in the UK shouldn’t know what their car insurance group is. It is relatively easy to find what car insurance group a vehicle falls into. In fact, there are many websites that offer search tools to determine what a specific vehicle’s car insurance group is.

Thatcham is a great resource for finding out what insurance group your car is in. Simply visit and enter the relevant information about your vehicle to see its group assignment.

Many individuals want to know what makes and models are in the lowest (or highest) ranked groups before they go shopping for a new car.

To find a complete list of different types of automobiles and what groups they fall under, try visiting a site like Wise Buyers or Parker’s to browse by car insurance group.

This way, you can target your car-buying search to look only at models that fall into the insurance group that you are most comfortable with.

Remember that groups are based on statistical information that is regularly updated. As such, they are subject to change. Be sure to check back frequently to make sure that you have the most up to date information about your car’s insurance group.

What to Look For Before You Buy a New Car

If you are shopping for a new car, you will want to carefully review the makes and models in the different groups. This will allow you to consider the impact of your purchase decision on your car insurance.

When you narrow down your choice to several cars, you should once again compare and contrast their groups.

Remember, a more expensive car that is in a less expensive insurance group may end up costing you less in the long run when compared to a cheaper car in a higher group.

It is important to consider the total cost of ownership of a vehicle before purchasing. This means not only the sticker price but also the cost of the following:

  • insurance
  • repairs
  • maintenance

All of these factors will add up to determine whether a car is affordable. Be realistic about what you are able to spend and you will be able to make a wise choice in purchasing your next vehicle.

Car insurance groups can be a valuable tool to understand your car’s insurance risk factors and cost of ownership.

Even if you do not live in the UK, where such groups are utilized, you may still be able to learn a lot by reviewing the different groups and understanding the risk factor determinations that create them.
