Are there differences between insurance coverage from Mexico and traditional insurance from the United States?

There are quite a few differences between insurance coverage from Mexico and insurance from the United States. For example, Mexican insurance will most likely not cover small claims that result from vandalism or a minor fender bender.

In addition, unlike in the United States, Mexican authorities will usually consider someone guilty first, and require that their innocence is proved.

This is different from the United States where all individuals are innocent until proven guilty. Because of this, it is highly recommended that you purchase additional coverage that would cover any legal or bond fees. In addition, it is also very important to immediately contact the American consulate if you are in an accident.

Is there anything else I need when renting a car in Mexico?

It is important to make sure you have shared all your travel information with your auto insurance company, even if they are not covering you while driving in Mexico.

Information such as your dates of travel and where you are going, as well as the name and phone number of the agent and insurance company that is covering you while you are in Mexico should be given to your United States-based auto insurance company.

In addition to purchasing insurance at an insurance broker near the border, there are also some companies that offer online Mexican car insurance. It is best to compare rates between companies if possible and make sure the coverage has everything you need. In most cases, you can even get your insurance coverage quickly and receive instant proof of insurance.
