How does FR-44 car insurance work?

FR-44 is not insurance. FR-44 is known as a certification of financial responsibility (CFR).

Drivers with DUI or DWI-related convictions require FR-44 certification to restore their driving privileges.

However, you can’t get FR-44 without an auto insurance company. Car insurance companies can file FR-44 to your state’s department of motor vehicles.

But where can you get FR-44? Read the subsections below to learn where FR-44 is located.

Where can I get FR-44 certification?

FR-44 auto insurance is only available in Florida and Virginia. Although Virginia and Florida have FR-44, the coverage limits for both states vary.

What’s the difference between SR-22 car insurance and FR-44 car insurance?

SR-22 requires you to carry the minimum requirements. Meanwhile, FR-44 demands high-risk drivers to have double the minimum coverage limits.

SR-22 is not as nearly as expensive as FR-44. And SR-22 certification is found in most states, but FR-44 is only in Florida and Virginia.

When is FR-44 certification required?

If you’ve been convicted of DUI or DWI, Florida and Virginia state law demands that you get FR-44.

DUIs and DWIs will significantly drive up your car insurance rates, in almost all cases.

Causing bodily injury while driving under the influence is another reason why you need FR-44.

Florida and Virginia motorists that are caught driving without a license due to a DUI conviction are required to get FR-44.

Can I get FR-44 without a car?

The short answer is yes. FR-44 insurance without a vehicle is the same as non-owner car insurance. However, non-standard auto insurance is more expensive than standard insurance.

Read on to see FR-44 requirements in both states.

What are the FR-44 car insurance requirements in Florida and Virginia?

Here are the FR-44 requirements for Florida and Virginia.

FR-44 Insurance Florida Requirements:

  • $100,000 for injury or death to one person
  • $300,000 for injury or death of multiple people
  • $50,000 for property damage liability

FR-44 Insurance Virginia Requirements:

  • $50,000 for bodily injury or death to one person
  • $100,000 for bodily injury or death of multiple people
  • $40,000 for property damage liability

Since FR-44 demands higher coverage levels, you’ll pay more. If you want to know how FR-44 affects auto insurance, continue reading.

Does FR-44 affect car insurance rates?

FR-44 certification forms cost between $15 and $25. Many factors determine whether affordable FR-44 car insurance is available to you.

What about costs? To get the cheapest FR-44 car insurance rates, you should get liability-only coverage.

You can get liability-only coverage for as low as $1,728 per year in Florida and $1,152 a year in Virginia.

If you still make payments on your car, you’ll pay at least 49% more for car insurance. However, your FR-44 car insurance quotes vary for each person.

Can I pay FR-44 car insurance installments?

Florida law dictates that all FR-44 policies must be paid in full. Virginia doesn’t have this law and allows drivers to enroll in a payment plan program.

If you do pay your FR-44 policy in full, you may be eligible for car insurance discounts.

What if I can’t afford FR-44 car insurance?

Shop around for an FR-44 car insurance company with affordable rates. Direct Auto and Dairyland are known to carry non-standard auto insurance.

But it won’t hurt to keep shopping around for auto insurance in your local area.

Can I cancel FR-44 car insurance?

The answer is no. FR-44 lasts for three years. After three years, if your car insurance company determines that you’re still a high-risk driver, you’ll have to get FR-44 again.
