The American Automobile Association, more commonly known as AAA, is a federation of regional motor clubs across the United States and Canada. Founded in Chicago in 1902, AAA’s purpose is to lobby for the rights of drivers and promote safe vehicles and roads.

They’re a not-for-profit that provides roadside service, auto repair, motoring advice, travel assistance, AAA car insurance, and more. There are a total of 32 clubs and 1,000 financial branches in North America. With over 61 million members, AAA serves a large community. But as with any type of membership, sometimes people need to cancel for one reason or another.

Can I cancel my AAA membership?

Maybe the cost is too expensive, or you don’t feel like you’re getting your money’s worth. You may have found a more affordable road assistance service elsewhere. How do I cancel AAA?

If you want to start the process to cancel your membership with AAA, there are several different ways to do so.

Call AAA’s Member Services Number

AAA has a member services line that customers can use to reach a live agent. You can speak with an account specialist by calling 1-866-636-2377 on Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Choose ‘Member Services’ from the voice menu options.
  • Make sure to have your account information at the ready.
  • Explain to the operator that you would like to cancel your policy.
  • Confirm that the membership is canceled and AAA won’t charge you for future services.

This is a great way to cancel your AAA membership without having to leave your home.

Visit Your Local AAA Branch

To cancel your membership, AAA has to speak to the primary member of the account. If you can’t call over the phone, then you can visit a local AAA branch to cancel the membership in person.

  • Find out where the nearest AAA location is.
  • Make sure to bring your driver’s license, AAA policy number, and the date you’d like your policy to end with you.
  • Let the agent know you would like to cancel your AAA membership.

For those that want to make sure everything is handled by someone they can physically see, canceling at a local branch is a good idea.

Complete An Online Cancellation Form

If you need to cancel your membership fast, you can sign in to your AAA account and fill out an online form.

  • Log into your member’s account.
  • Click on My Account.
  • Select the cancel membership link.
  • Complete the Cancel Entire Membership form.
  • Submit.

Make sure to follow up with a customer representative to make sure that the cancellation form went through successfully.

What are the steps to cancel a AAA membership?

AAA’s membership cancellation process is relatively easy. But you don’t want to be too hasty. There are a couple of steps you should take first before you end the policy.

Know When Your Contract Ends

The closer you cancel AAA to the renewal date for the policy the better. You should be able to access your membership renewal date from your AAA member account. If you’re having trouble you can always reach out to AAA to get assistance. When you cancel as closely as possible to the renewal date, the cancellation fee will be smaller. The further you are into the term, the more money you’ll lose out on.

Shop Around for New Car Insurance

If you have car insurance with AAA, you need to consider cancelation more carefully. You don’t want to cancel your car insurance without having a plan for what’s next. It’s important to do some research and shop around for a new policy. Since you know what you don’t like about AAA, use those guidelines to pick out a better insurance plan for you. Don’t cancel AAA until you have another policy in place.

Cancel AAA

Now that you have a new policy, you won’t be left vulnerable when you switch your coverage. Just reach out to an insurance agent by telephone, or visit a local AAA location and cancel the membership and your policy. Remember that you do have to be a member of AAA to have car insurance with the company, so if you want to keep your car insurance with AAA, you can’t cancel your membership.

Make Sure to Get Your Refund

If you pay your premiums in full at the beginning of your policy term, AAA might owe you a refund. In order to make sure you get what you deserve, you might have to follow up until AAA sends the refund. This process usually takes a couple of weeks, so don’t be surprised if you don’t get the refund right away. Yet, be sure to take into consideration that AAA could charge a cancellation fee if you aren’t near your renewal date.

Can I cancel a deceased family member’s AAA?

Another reason someone might want to cancel a AAA membership is if it belonged to a deceased loved one. In this case, you should visit a local AAA branch and explain the situation to an agent. You’ll probably need their death certificate, account information, policy number, and their membership number. The agent should be able to help you. Otherwise, you can call or email AAA customer service.

Why should I keep AAA?

If you’re unsure about canceling your AAA membership, think about the benefits and extras they offer you as a customer. Although AAA isn’t the cheapest option out there, if you use the discounts and extras, then it might be worth sticking with. Here are some of the most common benefits and discounts AAA offers:

  • Travel discounts on hotels, plane tickets, and more.
  • Discounts at stores, cellular providers, restaurants, and entertainment.
  • Automotive savings on repairs and maintenance.
  • Comprehensive coverage for home, auto, life, and more.

Remember that if you are canceling a AAA car insurance policy in addition to membership, there is more to consider. Canceling an insurance policy is a big decision, so you shouldn’t make it lightly. Make sure that you have a plan so that there won’t be a window where you don’t have coverage. Calling a AAA agent to discuss your options is a good idea.
