The 6 Months with the Most Traffic

#5 – April

With 254.9 billion vehicle miles traveled in 2014, April ranks 5th out of the busiest months on US roads. This month is only growing in popularity, with a 4.6 billion increase in miles traveled between April 2013 and April 2014.

Many of the schools in the west have spring break in April, which explains why almost 60 billion of those traveled miles took place in the west.

#4 – June

The US had 261.8 billion miles traveled in June of 2014, making June the fourth busiest month on our roads. With a 3.7 billion increase from the year before, more people are choosing this summer month to hit the open road. 60.5 billion of those miles were traveled in the north-central part of America.

#3 – May and October

There is a tie for the third busiest month for US roads. Both May and October had 264.2 billion miles traveled in 2014. May had an increase of 2.4 billion miles from 2013 to 2014, while October had a surprising 6.6 billion increase. Like June, both of these months had the majority of their miles, about 60 billion, traveled in the north-central part of the US.

Like the third and fourth place, the second busiest month of the year had the largest number of its miles traveled in the north-central region of the US at 61 billion-plus.

#1 – August

Summer’s coming to an end, college kids are driving to school…whatever the reason, August is a very busy month on US roads. Two years in a row this warm-weather month has had the most miles traveled out of any month in the year.

In August of 2014, there were 267.8 billion miles traveled, which was a billion more than the year before. Like most of the top six busiest months, the majority of those miles, 61 billion, were traveled in the north-central region of the US.
