Buick and Its History

Buick was organized in 1899 as the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company and later incorporated by David Dunbar in 1903 when it became the Buick Motor Company. This company was taken over by James H. Whiting, who moved the business to Flint, Michigan.

Buick sold his stock in the company for a small amount.

Buick, in addition to being the oldest automobile brand in the United States, is also one of the older brands throughout the world.

The brand had problems with the onset of the imported vehicles from Asia along with the remainder of American motorcars, but it is in the process of a resurgence in popularity with new engineering and marketing.

The older Buicks were distinctive because of the VentiPorts, which originally had a flashing light in each hole.

The VentiPorts were intended to represent the flames from the exhaust stack of a fighter airplane. These appeared on the cars in a series just in front of the driver and passenger doors and at the end of the engine compartment.

When Buick produced a straight-eight engine, the number of ports indicated the size of the engine. Later, in 1949, sales brochures implied that the VentiPorts allowed air flow out of the engine bay.

These VentiPorts appear sporadically in Buick models, although they are no longer actual holes in the engine bay.

Insurance Requirements

Since liability insurance is required in every state, you should compare that cost as well as the cost of the vehicle you are considering.

Insurance can cost up to $2,000 per year per car or as little as $600 depending upon the coverage you choose and the vehicle you insure.

Costs vary by insurance company and location. Every state has a Department of Insurance that determines the minimum amounts of liability insurance individuals are required to carry on their vehicle in order to comply with state law.

You can find out these limits by going to the Department of Motor Vehicles where you get a drivers’ license.

You can also access the state website for the state in which you live then search for automobile liability requirements. You will be able to print this information out from the website.

Explanation of Coverage

Typically an automobile insurance policy has the following coverage available:

  • Bodily Injury Liability – Your responsibility to others for bodily injury caused by an accident for which you are responsible
  • Property Damage Liability – Your responsibility to others for property damage caused by an accident for which you are responsible
  • Medical and Funeral Service Payments – Pays for costs incurred in an accident for your passengers
  • Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury Limits – Pays for costs for bodily injury incurred in an accident with an uninsured motorist

The above coverages are types of liability coverage. These coverages essentially protect you by covering your legal financial responsibility in the event of an automobile accident.

The following coverages protect you against financial loss should you be involved in an automobile accident:

  • Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Limits– Protects your property should an uninsured motorist cause damage to your property
  • Comprehensive Coverage – Insures you against incidents such as theft, fire, vandalism, weather, and animal damage
  • Collision Coverage – Insures you against collision with non-living objects
  • Towing and Labor – Depending upon the insurance company, this will pay for towing and labor for your own car
