Dodge, although a distinct brand in itself has been connected to the Chrysler Corporation since 1928. Dodge began in 1914 when two brothers, Horace and John Dodge, founded the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle company.

Starting with a touring car, the brothers added a roadster and then a four-door sedan. They expanded to trucks by 1917 and were involved in World War I. Dodge vehicles were used as staff cars and ambulances.

Chrysler and Dodge

In 1928, Dodge was sold to the Chrysler Corporation and gradually become responsible for Chrysler’s trucks and performance-oriented vehicles. The most famous member of the Dodge line, the Charger, with a 318-cubic-inch V8 engine came out in the 1960’s.

Buyers often upgraded the engine to a 426-cubic-inch, 425 hp Hemi V8 engine, adding power and speed to the car.

Later, in 1970, Dodge entered the Challenger, a competitor to the Ford Mustang, to its lineup.

The Dodge Caravan

As fortunes in the American auto market began to wane in the 1970s, Dodge invested in economy cars and finally, in 1984, came out with the very popular Caravan.

Caravan was the first of the family-friendly vehicles able to seat up to seven people. The configuration is now known as a mini-van and is widely copied by most manufacturers.

Dodge is now well-known in the small pickup and delivery van market for durability and utility. A separate section, Ram, was developed to produce and sell their pickups and delivery vehicles.

Dodge in the New Century

Dodge now concentrates upon their more practical vehicles:

  • Dart, a mid-size sedan
  • Journey, SUV series
  • Ram, a spin-off specializing in trucks

Dodge in 2016

Dodge models for 2016 are:

  • Viper 21 mpg/highway MSRP $89,995
  • Challenger 30 mpg/highway MSRP $26,995
  • Charger 31 mpg/highway MSRP $27,995
  • Dart 41 mpg/highway MSRP $16,495
  • Durango 27 mpg/highway MSRP $30,495
  • Journey 26 mpg/highway MSRP $20,695
  • Grand Caravan 25 mpg/highway MSRP $21,795

You should keep in mind that the MSRP is the least a manufacturer plans to charge you for the vehicle. Prices go up from there so be prepared to negotiate wisely when purchasing a vehicle.

Generally, the Dodge brand has been reliable, but there are concerns about the continued reliability of its sedans.

Time will prove the durability of Dodge’s reputation.

Insuring a Dodge

For the purposes of insurance comparison, we were curious about costs to insure the 2014 Dodge Dart. This car has a low beginning MSRP, gets high gas mileage, and its sporty appearance should make it appeal to younger drivers without children.

Our couple for this scenario were 22 and 21 years old, both in college, renting, and making payments on the Dart.

They have no children and they commute to school and part-time jobs. One insurance company reduced their premium because we informed them both attended the University of Colorado.

Whenever purchasing insurance it is wise to compare at least two quotations for any type of insurance. The rate filings with the State Department of Insurance in your state can vary.

Furthermore, insurance rates vary from state to state so moving is an excellent time to check your insurance premiums. Companies vary with regard to credits and incentives so it’s worth checking.

The couple in our story requested these limits of liability which are basic for most states:

  • Bodily Injury Liability – $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident. This covers your responsibility in an accident to other individuals for bodily injury if the accident is your fault.
  • Property Damage Liability – $50,000 per accident . This covers your responsibility in an accident to other individuals for property damage if the accident is your fault.
  • Medical Payments Coverage – $5,000. This provides incidental medical coverage for you or people in your car.
  • Underinsured/uninsured Motorists Coverage – $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident. This provides bodily injury coverage for you or your passengers if you are damaged in a car by an uninsured motorist.

They also requested physical damage coverage:

  • Comprehensive Coverage – $500 deductible. This covers animal damage, weather damage, vandalism, and theft.
  • Collision Coverage – $500 deductible. This covers collision damage to your car.

Quotes for Dodge Insurance

Estimated quotes for the 2014 Dodge Dart:

  • Insurance Company #1: $1,045 for six months
  • Insurance Company #2: $1,020.50 for six months

In this case, the costs of insurance are very close. There are no guarantees, however, that the rates will remain the same next year. As this hypothetical couple completes college, possibly acquires a home, and develops a credit rating, the rates will change.

Accurate quotes require entering Social Security numbers and exact information such as VIN numbers. Online quotes can give you an idea of the general costs for a particular car and individuals.

Always comparison-shop for insurance as carefully as you do for a car, a home, or any other large purchase. Over the years, insurance costs accumulate and, if you keep track, you’ll find that you have a great deal of money invested in insurance.
