Hyundai Motor Company was established in 1967. While the manufacturer is one of Ford’s biggest competitors today, the first model produced by Hyundai in 1968 was actually designed in coordination with Ford Motor Company.

It wasn’t until Hyundai started to enter the US market in 1986 that the brand started to become a well-known name by Americans. The company’s timing was perfect for their target audience.

One of the factors that made Hyundai so desirable in the US market is that no other manufacturer was really offering an affordable, value-priced vehicle.

This low cost is why Hyundai marketed to young car buyers and to families with a limited income who wanted reliable cars that were well-equipped. While this strategy worked through the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, Hyundai is all about innovation.

This goal is the prime reason why they have started a new luxury Genesis line.

History of the 2018 Hyundai G80

AdobeStock_101522098-1600x1600

The 2018 Hyundai G80 is part of the Concept Genesis that was first introduced in March of 2017. Instead of being marked with the traditional Hyundai logo, this new premier four-door sedan will feature a Genesis nameplate with a new high-end logo design.

The G80 was debuted as a 2017 model with a long list of standard equipment that you’d find in long-standing luxury brands.

The first generation Genesis G80 produced by Hyundai Motor Company received rave reviews by reliable consumer rating companies like Edmunds.

Interestingly enough, it is pretty much the same car as the 2015 Hyundai Genesis, just under a new nameplate with upgraded specs and a more powerful powertrain.

The most attractive features were the following:

  • affordable price tag
  • excellent crash test scores
  • long warranty
  • overall refinement in the design.

The 2018 G80 has taken things one step further.

7 Facts about the 2018 Hyundai G80

#1 – A Boldly Styled Exterior Will Draw You In

In the upscale market, you don’t expect to find a lot of options that fall below the $50,000 price tag. The Genesis G80 has begun drawing in consumers in with its bold new and sporty styling and its value-based pricing.

It makes sense for the manufacturing giant to mark the G80 and upcoming luxury models with a different nameplate. After all, luxury wouldn’t be a term Hyundai is known for.

By marketing the luxury lineup under a new name, the company can compete companies like Infiniti and Lexus.

Not only is the G80 well-constructed, the 2018 Hyundai G80 has a refined design both inside and out.

Some of the most notable additions are the following:

  • customized cross-hatched chrome grille that’s new to the Genesis brand
  • dual chrome exhaust tips
  • copper details around the grill
  • wheels that keep it fashionable without being cliche

#2 – Twin-Turbo Thrust

AdobeStock_68252210-1600x1600

The engine options changed as well for the 2018 Genesis G80.

Instead of only offering a base engine, you can choose from a twin-turbo 3.8L V6 engine with a 311hp output, you can choose the more powerful 5.0L V8 option with 420hp output and even more thrust that can take the car 0 to 60 in 5 seconds.

The 2017 model only came with a smaller engine which is a major reason why it never had a sport trim level until 2018.

#3 – Power Everything

You would expect a luxury sedan to have power windows and door locks, but the G80 doesn’t offer just that.

Drivers enjoy the power front seat feature, which is powered eight different ways. You can choose from different heating settings along with four different lumbar settings for an ergonomic driving experience.

The G80 comes standard with driver memory settings for the leather-upholstered seat and a steering wheel that can be adjusted by pressing a motorized button.

These features are welcomed because there’s no struggling to get comfortable when you and your partner share the car for everyday use.

#4 – The Ultimate Sport Package

The G80 Sports package offers you much more than just a turbocharged engine with 420hp. When you go ultimate, you’ll get all types of different turbocharged features.

The ultimate 2018 Genesis G80 gets an adaptive suspension system, special sport front seats, 19-inch alloy wheels, a carbon-fiber trim, and a new and more refined suede headliner.

#5 – A Tech-Savvy Sports Sedan

Today’s luxury brands have to come fully-stocked with technologically advanced features. You might not be buying an automated car capable of self-starting or self-driving, but you’re still going to love the computerized systems.

The car is fully stocked with the following:

  • navigation
  • Apple and Android smartphone integration
  • a telematics system
  • an eight-inch interface to use all of these features at the touch of a virtual button

#6 – An Automatic Touch for Safety

AdobeStock_65125128-1600x1600

Have you ever driven a car that’s equipped with warning systems that help you avoid a catastrophe when possible? More and more luxury sedans are coming with these automatic warning systems that are capable of saving lives.

The 2018 Hyundai G80 will give you access to a suite of warning systems.

Automatic emergency braking is one of those safety features that has taken quite some time to develop. The suite of the emergency braking warning systems will be triggered in a number of scenarios when driving the G80.

Some of the most notable systems include:

  • a pedestrian detector
  • blind-spot detection
  • lane departure and lane keeping
  • backup cross-traffic
  • multi-view camera aides

#7 – Fuel Efficient and Luxurious

Luxury models don’t often boast fuel efficient engineering unless it’s a hybrid design. The 2018 Hyundai G80, however, is extremely efficient for a mid-size luxury sedan with so much torque.

Tests have done the calculations and uncovered that the G80 can get 19 miles per gallon by city and 27 miles per gallon the highway. It’s not the most fuel efficient model on the market, but it does well in its class.

The Verdict

It’s not common for a luxury sedan with sporty styling to be value-priced. While the 2018 Hyundai G80 is by no means cheap, it’s in the lower end of pricing for the segment it’s in.

Consumers in the luxury segment aren’t always concerned with price, but the new Genesis concept is about to change the way luxury car buyers think.

If you’re going to test drive a 2018 Hyundai G80, also known as the Genesis G80, make sure that you price the cost of insurance.

The automatic braking aides might help keep premiums lower, but there’s still a chance you’re paying more because of the turbocharged engine.
