What is an insurance claim?

An insurance claim letter for a damaged car is an extremely important component of the claim negotiation process. How do you write an insurance claim? While it does not have to be fancy or elaborate, it does need to communicate your intention, as well as include necessary data supporting your claim.

If you are involved in an auto accident, you must file a claim for injuries or damage to your vehicle.  You will need to provide the insurance adjuster with all the necessary paperwork.

Then you will then need to negotiate compensation based on your claim. Frequently, the other driver’s insurance adjuster (in a situation where his or her insurance is responsible) will make initial contact with you, offering you the first settlement amount.

Settling a claim is a negotiation process, so you need to completely understand the settlement that is offered to you.

If you aren’t satisfied with the settlement offer, you can write a claim letter, outlining the amount you feel that your claim warrants. Once the adjuster receives your letter, he or she will respond to you with a counteroffer.

Adjusters have a compensation range for each settlement and tend to begin negotiations with the absolute lowest figure in that range. This is because they are paid to settle claims for the lowest amount possible.

What to do When There is No Resolution

Try taking the following steps when dealing with car insurance companies that don’t want to cooperate:

  • Contact an attorney who specializes in auto accidents to determine if the amount outlined in your claim letter is, indeed, a reasonable one. Be sure to provide them with all the facts and necessary paperwork.
  • Write a letter to the other party’s insurance company, explaining your situation, and supporting the value of the compensation you have requested; again, including any relevant facts and paperwork.
  • Request mediation or dispute resolution with an impartial third party such as a lawyer.

How do you write a car insurance claim letter? Your chances of success will be much better if you follow the steps below:

  • Depict exactly how the accident occurred, and how you were caused physical injury or loss. Be certain to incorporate all necessary information. For example, include a copy of the police report or statements from witnesses.
  • Include all the info you have concerning any injuries, along with damage, treatments, and repairs. Be as descriptive as you can, while being sure to put in as much detail and information as possible as to how your life was affected by the accident.
  • Compile a list of any and all repair costs or medical bills incurred due to the accident. Be sure to incorporate all applicable names and addresses that are associated with such repairs or injuries.

Before sending the final draft of your letter to the insurance company or your insurance agent, attach any documents that happen to substantially support your claim. For example, any repair invoices or medical bills.

Above all else, be patient! Insurance companies can be notoriously slow. It’s perfectly all right to check up on the status of your claim, but be realistic about the length of the process it takes to complete the claim successfully.
