Here's what you should know...

  • Lincoln is a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company that produces luxury vehicles
  • Because they are upperclass cars, a Lincoln is more expensive to insure
  • The recent Lincoln MKZ hybrid is a more affordable option that is also better for the enviornment

Lincoln, a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, has produced luxury vehicles for the rather upscale market. The brand became an independent luxury-car producer in 1917. Henry M. Leland, an engineer, formed the company after he left Cadillac.

No matter what car you drive, you should always compare rates before purchasing auto insurance. Use our FREE tool at the top of this page by entering your ZIP code!

Lincoln supplied Liberty aircraft engines for the Army during WWI, and then the factory was converted to manufacturing automobiles. The brand encountered design troubles and financial difficulties, which sent them into bankruptcy. Finally, the firm was sold to Ford in 1922.

Lincoln began to compete with Cadillac and Rolls Royce over the years.

Between 1998 and 2002, Lincoln was sold to the Premier Automotive Group and then was returned to Ford. With the downturn in the American automotive industry, Lincoln lost its market to Asian and European imports. At present Ford is attempting to revitalize the brand by producing new models that will apply to a new demographic.

Lincoln is producing the following models for 2013 – 2014:

  • Lincoln MKZ MSRP $36,100 MPG – estimated by EPA 22/33
  • Lincoln MKZ Hybrid MPG – estimated by EPA 45/45
  • Lincoln MKX MSRP $39,575 MPG – estimated by EPA 17/23
  • Lincoln MK5 MSRP $40,000 MPG – estimated by EPA 17/25
  • Lincoln MKT MSRP $43,050 MPG – estimated by EPA 17/25
  • Lincoln Navigator MSRP $57,875 MPG – estimated by EPA 13/18

Lincoln Rebranding

Lincoln is aiming its new MKZ Hybrid at “Progressive Luxury Buyers” with a new ad campaign. They have separated the Ford and Lincoln showrooms and emphasizing personal service. They offer water of the brand preferred by the customer, and other amenities.

Car washes are given for every repair order, loaner cars are guaranteed, and an online concierge is offered. The intent is to focus upon the estimated 20 to 25 percent of the luxury car market.

Lincolns in American History

The Lincoln limousine was the preferred vehicle for American presidents because of the appeal of the Lincoln Continental model.

John F. Kennedy’s transport on the day of his assassination on November 22, 1963 in Dallas was a remodeled Lincoln Continental Convertible.

That convertible was modified by Hess & Eisenhardt of Cincinnati, Ohio. They cut it in half and stretched the convertible by more than three feet. Accessories were added, including a PA system, radiotelephone, lights, sirens, and externally mounted grab-handles for the Secret Service agents.

The vehicle was painted a deep blue. Three tops were made for the Lincoln, including a clear Plexiglas roof. None of the tops was used in the Dallas motorcade.

After Kennedy’s assassination, the vehicle was examined exhaustively and then refurbished and repainted deep black for further use by U.S. Presidents. A bulletproof and non-removable roof was added for protection.

Thirty-five years ago, the limousine was retired from service at the White House and placed upon exhibit at The Henry Ford, the automobile museum in Dearborn, Michigan. It is to be noted that the limousine was never owned by the White House, but rented from Ford.

This history reflects the prestige of Lincoln vehicles in the past. It is to be hoped that the historic brand achieves a revival.

Insuring a Lincoln

Automobile insurance is required as a matter of law by the several states of the United States.

Public policy demands that individuals carry automobile insurance to protect others as they drive. The basic limits of liability are set by the individual state. These limits can be determined by contacting the Insurance Department of the State in which you live.

Because the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is made in the United States and original parts are available in the United States at a reasonable price, insurance is readily available from the regular insurance market.

Comparison-Pricing for Insurance

Since the average person spends around $84,000 in premiums on insurance over their lifetime, it is prudent to examine the premiums you pay.

One way of doing that is to request comparison quotes annually to see if other companies have a significant difference from the insurance premiums you are currently paying.

First, you will need to have the following information about you and your family:

  • Drivers in the household – ages, names, dates of birth, and drivers license numbers
  • Make, model, and year of all vehicles
  • Driving records of individuals in the household

Secondly, you will need to have a clear idea of the limits of liability as well as physical damage for your automobiles. Use your current insurance company if necessary, but you may want to use the following suggested limits:

  • Bodily Injury Liability – $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident – for your responsibility to others for legal liability for bodily injury from accidents you may have caused.
  • Property Damage Liability $50,000 per accident – to pay your responsibility to others for legal liability for property damage from accidents you may have caused
  • Medical Payments Coverage – $5,000 for medical payments for you and passengers in your vehicle
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists Coverage$100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident bodily injury for you and your passengers if you are involved in an accident with an individual who does not have insurance.
  • Comprehensive Insurance – $500.00 deductible – This pays for damage to your own vehicle for theft, vandalism, animal damage, weather damage, and glass breakage less the deductible.
  • Collision Insurance $500.00 deductible – This pays for damage to your own vehicle for collision damage to the vehicle less the deductible.

Why Do Insurance Rates Vary from Company to Company?

Insurance rates are set in cooperation with individual state insurance departments based upon loss and expense experience verified by the actuaries for the insurance company involved. Each company has differing experience with aspects of the insurance market and the expenses they have to run their company.

Insurance rates also depend upon the driving records, ages, and experience of the drivers of the automobiles.

Premium Quotations for Insuring a 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

Because quotations vary according to the circumstances of the drivers, you need to know the basis for these quotes:

The individuals are married, have clear driving records, have bachelor’s degrees, and commute twenty miles or less one way. They are 46 years old. They have 2 vehicles, the 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and a 2007 Ford Taurus sedan.

Physical damage coverage is not carried on the Taurus because it is paid for. They live in a suburb of Denver, Colorado. Colorado has one of the lower average payments for car insurance in the United States. Minnesota and Louisiana have the highest averages and Maine has the lowest.

Insurance Company #1 – $663.00 for Six Months

Insurance Company #2 – $532.00 for Six Months

Multi-car discounts and clear record discounts apply to these quotes. Both were quoted with insurance companies that offer electronic policies, payments, and paperless discounts.

In this case, the insurance premiums are relatively close in price. You would have to determine if it is worth it to you to change insurance carriers. In some cases, you may lose loyalty discounts.
