  • Village auto insurance is not a specific type of policy that only covers you when you drive in a small village or town

State Requirements for Auto Insurance

Most states require that coverage be provided by a licensed car insurance company.

Yet there are a handful of states that will allow drivers to self-insure if they can demonstrate they have the financial resources to pay car insurance claims out of pocket. Self-insurance is unusual because it requires a person to have strong financial means.

What are the minimum car insurance requirements?

States also require minimum amounts of coverage for bodily injury, property damage, and uninsured/underinsured drivers.

  • Bodily damage – coverage pays the medical expenses incurred by you, your passengers, and in some cases, other drivers
  • Property damage – provides coverage in case an accident damages someone else’s property; things like fences, porches, etc
  • Uninsured/underinsured coverage – pays for bodily injury or property damage if another driver involved in the accident happens to be without adequate insurance coverage

Each state will have different requirements. You will need to know your state requirements to make sure you are covered correctly.

What are the 3 types of car insurance?

There are three basic types of car insurance. Liability, collision, and comprehensive are the most common and each offers different coverages.

Liability covers the property damage and bodily injuries of the other person if you are at fault in an accident. It does not cover your damages.

Collision covers the damages and bodily injuries for you and your passengers if you are at fault in an accident.

Comprehensive will cover damages not involving an accident, such as flood, fire, vandalism, falling trees, and windshield damage.

Full coverage insurance includes all three of these coverages. It is more expensive upfront, but it will save you out of pocket expenses should an accident occur.

This table shows you the average cost difference in high, medium, and low coverages.

How Auto Insurance Rates are Determined

In simple terms, car insurance companies determine rates based on a formula that combines all of their risks versus the potential to earn money.

Companies earn money by investing the cash received from their customers’ premiums, with the goal of making sure their earnings exceed what they pay out in claims.

Therefore, they must factor in all the risks involved in insuring a given driver. If a specific driver presents a higher risk that the insurance company will lose money, his rates will be higher than someone else’s.

What factors are used to determine rates?

The Insurance Information Institute identifies the common risk factors as the age and sex of the driver, make and model of the car, the driving history of the car’s owner and principal drivers, and the state and city where the driver resides. We will look at just two factors to give you an idea of how much your rates can change based on your specific details.

Let’s look at how age, gender, and marital status affect your rates.

Keeping Insurance Rates as Low as Possible

Keeping your car insurance rates as low as possible requires you to take care of those things you can control. For example, a small company will be more likely to charge a higher rate to drivers who frequently get speeding tickets or report accidents. Simply by driving safely and legally, you will eliminate that part of the equation.

By the same token, drivers who are reckless on the road are almost guaranteed higher insurance premiums.

Car insurance can be tricky business if you don’t take the time to ask questions and compare policies.

In other words, you want to compare the same amount of coverage for the same driver and the same car all across the board.

What car insurance discounts are there?

Even if your driving record isn’t stellar, there are many discounts out there to help bring down your rates. A few of the more common discounts are:

  • Good student
  • Multi-car or multi-policy
  • Defensive driving course
  • Car safety features
  • E-billing
  • Military and occupational

Each company offers different discounts so be sure to ask about any discounts you may be eligible for.
