Learning about car insurance can be an overwhelming and stressful process because insurance is a necessary expense if one wants to drive an automobile in most states in the US.

1. Compare Rates
By simply typing “compare auto insurance rates” into your favorite online search engine, you will find a plethora of websites to use for car insurance quote comparisons. The hardest part may be making sure you are comparing companies based strictly on the same criteria and coverage from company to company.
Make a list of the coverage and options you need and stick to it.
If you realize that one of your criteria have changed along the way, make sure you go back and re-do previous quotes with the new criteria.
Ask friends and family for recommendations relating to competitive auto insurance and for their experience with their company when they had a problem or needed to make a claim.
You can also do research online to choose the right car insurance company.

2. Follow-up
Once you have a general idea of costs and coverage options, start calling insurance agents. They can personalize a policy to your needs in a way that you may not be able to get online.
A good agent can offer tips such as the cost effectiveness of a higher deductible or the benefits of consolidating your policies with one company.
Here are some additional tips on how to find the best auto insurance agent.
Personally speaking to agents may reveal discounts that are not publicized online such as discounts relating to age, good driver records, defensive driver classes, etc.
Alarms and other safety devices can also reduce your premium. It pays to find out which of these will yield the best discounts.
3. Make modifications
Gather all of the information you can about what discounts are available, what makes your premium cost higher, and how to make modifications wherever possible. For instance, you may discover that your premium would be lower if you had a garage or lived one block over in a different zip code.
While it might not pay for you to move simply to save a few hundred dollars on auto insurance, it is something to take into account whenever you do decide to move.
Another modification can be made when you shop for a new vehicle. As you consider which vehicle to purchase, find out which of your choices will have the power insurance premium.
Some vehicles cost more to repair than others. Safety features such as front and side air bags can result in lower premiums. Some vehicles are simply more reliable than others. Insurance companies take such factors into consideration when setting premiums.
If possible, change your driving habits. Take mass transit to work or car pool with a coworker to use your car less. If you are willing to receive online statements, sign up for auto-payments, pay six months or a full year all at once, then you may receive additional discounts.
Maintain or clean up your driving record.
An excellent driving record is a very important way to ensure you are getting the best insurance rates. If you have points on your license, consider taking a state sponsored course to get them removed. And remember: drive safely, and don’t speed.
4. Check your current policy
Check your policy on a regular basis to see if there are any premium items that are unnecessary or that can be modified due to your own change of circumstances. You may, for instance, no longer have a child of driving age living at home. You may have retired and no longer commute to work.
You may own multiple cars and only use more than one of them on rare occasions. If a car is garaged for most of the year, the premium should reflect that.
Once your vehicle reaches a certain age or no longer has a loan attached to it, your coverage requirements may change. Not every vehicle needs full coverage. If you are looking to keep your auto insurance premium competitive, opt for a policy that offers the coverage you need and nothing more.
You also do not need to pay premiums that include towing fees and rental cars if you have auto club memberships that cover those items.
There are many automobile insurance companies vying for your business.
Many are getting very creative about earning it. They have even started offering benefits and plans that reward loyalty, offer discounts for group affiliations, and allow for lower premiums if you will allow them to install certain driving recording devices.
However, their creativity does not negate your obligation to do your own research, become a knowledgeable consumer, and to challenge any discrepancies.
Armed with the proper knowledge, you will insure that your auto insurance premiums are the most competitive possible.
