Here's what you need to know...

  • The process for finding insurance for a new driver is the same process anyone would use when looking for insurance
  • You should compare rates and decide what coverage options fit into your budget
  • Car insurance for first-time drivers is expensive, but with time and safe driving, you can expect a decrease
  • Previous experience driving in other countries will not make you an “experienced driver” in the eyes of U.S. insurance companies.

When people think about a car insurance for first-time drivers, they usually think about teen drivers. While this is often true, there are many adults who, for various reasons ,did not learn to drive as teens and are first-time drivers.

If you’re a first-time driver, make sure you know how to get the insurance coverage you need.

When you are buying car insurance for the very first time, you may be shocked by the cost of insurance coverage. The good news is that as you gain experience as a driver, you will see your costs decrease —at least if you’re a good driver!

First-Time Coverage is Easy to Get

For those of you new to the world of buying car insurance, you may wonder about the difficulty of purchasing this necessary coverage. The good news is that you shouldn’t have any problem purchasing the car insurance you need, except for in some extreme circumstances.

For the majority of individuals, finding car insurance for a first-time driver usually requires the same process as someone who has been driving for years.

You will want to go online and find a good free car insurance quote tool.

The reason that you want to use a quote tool is that you will be able to compare rates of several companies without having to visit multiple car insurance websites.

In addition, when you enter your zip code you are ensuring that the quotes you receive are from companies licensed to sell insurance in your area.

You need to be aware that if you are a new driver, even if you have experience driving outside of the U.S. but not in the U.S., you will pay higher insurance costs than someone who is an experienced driver.

Unfortunately, for those of you from outside the U.S., most car insurance companies won’t take your previous driving experience into consideration because it can be so different driving in other countries.

The exception is Canada because their laws and driving conditions are so similar to the United States’.

Coverage Options

Again, much like with standard car insurance, you have the same options as a first-time buyer as anyone else does. There are several different types of coverage options available and some coverage will vary depending on the insurance company that you choose:

  • For example, companies like State Farm are full insurers. They offer virtually any type of car insurance coverage that you can imagine from liability to gap insurance and everything in between.
  • There are some companies that only offer liability, collision, and comprehensive plans. These companies don’t offer any of the extras such as roadside assistance and so on.
  • Furthermore, you will find that some companies only offer liability coverage. These companies tend to be the least expensive option for coverage; however, they generally only sell the minimum coverage required by the state you live in, which means if your needs change you will have to find a new insurer.

Basic Types of Auto Insurance

At the very least, you will need to purchase liability coverage. Your state sets the minimum amount of liability coverage you are required to carry. You will be unable to purchase any insurance for lower than that minimum amount.

If you have a car that you want to be covered if you cause an accident, then you will need collision coverage. This coverage is more expensive and is added to your liability coverage.

Comprehensive coverage provides payment if your car is damaged in a storm, fire, is vandalized or is stolen.

Typically you would only pay for this coverage if you have a vehicle that has a good dollar value in terms of resale.

Comparing Costs of Coverage

As mentioned above, you have the option of using a free quote tool to find the best insurance premiums for your vehicle and your coverage needs. You need to take the time to shop around because car insurance coverage can be costly.
