  • Several model years were recalled in 2010

The cost of insurance for a Ford Windstar depends on a number of things. Originally introduced in 1995, this minivan received five stars on its crash test ratings.

The Ford Windstar stopped being manufactured in 2003 and was replaced in 2004 by the Ford Freestar minivan. The minivans are very similar in appearance and in functionality. The Ford Freestar stopped being produced in 2007 and is now replaced by the Ford Flex Crossover.

If you already own a Ford Windstar, you may be able to get cheaper car insurance by shopping around for better rates. If you are looking to buy a used Ford Windstar, request insurance quotes before you make the purchase.

Depending on the model year you buy your rates can be different.

What safety features of the Ford Windstar can reduce car insurance costs?

Throughout the years of production, the Ford Windstar underwent minor changes and had several versions offered with each generation. In general, the Ford Windstar was equipped with standard safety features.

  • The Ford Windstar is equipped with 4-wheel ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), which means the wheels won’t lock when you hit the brakes. This safety feature allows the driver to maintain better control over the car.
  • An adjustable upper belt, adjustable lower belt, and child seat anchorage were also included standard on the Ford Windstar. These safety features allow for the proper seat belt positioning for all passengers. Additionally, rear seat head restraints were added to help reduce the risk of whiplash.
  • Advanced airbags replaced standard airbags in the Ford Windstar as technology became available. Advanced airbags deploy in two stages to reduce the risk of injury to the passengers as a result of airbag deployment.

All of the standard safety features available in the Ford Windstar can get you a reduced rate on your car insurance premium. Most car insurance companies will give you a safety discount based on these types of installed devices.

Do car safety crash ratings reduce Ford Windstar car insurance costs?

From 2001 to 2003 the Ford Windstar received a five-star crash test rating for both the passenger’s side and the driver’s side as well as for the rear occupant and for the front occupant. For its rollover resistance, it received four stars.

The 1999 and 2000 Ford Windstar models also received five stars all across the board for the crash test ratings but there was no rollover test so no rollover rating is available.

From 1995 to 1998 the Ford Windstar was not tested for rollover nor was it tested for crashes for rear and front occupants. However, it did receive five stars for passenger and driver side crash tests.

Positive crash test ratings can lower your car insurance rates. If you have a later model Ford Windstar car that has tested positive on all of its crash tests, you may be able to get your insurance premium reduced.

How does the 2010 recall affect Ford Windstar car insurance costs?

After years of producing the Ford Windstar, a recall was officially announced by Ford. In August of 2010, Ford issued a recall on all Ford Windstar models produced from 1998 through 2003.

The recall only affects cars driven in cold-weather states. Salt and rust corrosion can cause the axle to break, which can cause an accident if the axle snaps while the car is in motion.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed more than 950 complaints of Ford Windstar axles that had either fractured or snapped outright.

Broken axles were replaced and reinforcement brackets were developed for cars that did not encounter any problems.

While the safety recall shouldn’t affect your car insurance rates, it is possible that your car insurance company can consider your car to be unsafe until repairs are made.

If you have a Ford Windstar that may be affected by the recall, call your Ford dealer and get your axle replaced or reinforced. Keep documentation of your recall and its repair so that you can show it to your car insurance company should any questions arise.

Since a Ford Windstar is not a sports car, but a family-sensible seven-passenger minivan, the insurance will not be extreme. The MSRP on the car itself was around $26,000 when it was new, and now the value is much, much lower.

Expect car insurance rates in the neighborhood of $900 per year. With the safety features installed as standard and the five-star crash tests and four-star rollover rating, the Ford Windstar is considered a reliable and safe car.
