While low-mileage drivers reap the most rewards, those who drive more frequently may find Mile Auto less competitive, as mileage can push monthly rates higher. High-risk drivers, such as those with traffic violations, also face higher base rates, even with the pay-per-mile model.

Mile Auto is ideal for drivers who don’t drive often, but it’s wise to compare multiple quotes to ensure you get the best deal. Find lower rates by entering your ZIP code into our free quote comparison tool above.

Average Monthly Rates With Mile Auto Insurance

Mile Auto offers a unique pay-per-mile model, which can result in significant car insurance savings for low-mileage drivers. It sets a flat monthly rate and then charges a per-mile rate every month.

mile auto insurance car insurance review: pay-per-mile car insurance defined

While Mile Auto advertises rates that start at $44/month, the truth is that most drivers pay closer to $100 monthly since the company bases the flat rate on driving record, age, gender, and location. Here’s a breakdown of the factors that affect car insurance quotes.

Mile Auto Insurance Rates by Age and Gender

Mile Auto Insurance rates vary significantly based on both age and gender. Younger drivers face substantially higher base rates but can keep costs low if they drive less than 900 miles per month.

Mile Auto Insurance Monthly Rates by Coverage Level, Age, & Gender

Age & GenderMinimum CoverageFull Coverage
Age: 16 Female$225$498
Age: 16 Male$240$525
Age: 18 Female$195$460
Age: 18 Male$210$485
Age: 25 Female$85$220
Age: 25 Male$90$235
Age: 30 Female$65$190

Age: 65 Female$58$132
Age: 65 Male$60$138

The gap persists across average car insurance rates by age and gender but narrows slightly as drivers age. By age 25, the difference between male and female rates is minimal.

Mile Auto Insurance Rates by Driving Record

Despite being a mileage-based provider, your driving history is still one of the most significant factors affecting your Mile Auto Insurance car insurance premium. Drivers with infractions still see an increase in their base rate before mileage is even factored in.

Drivers who need high-risk car insurance, such as those with a history of speeding tickets, accidents, or DUIs, will face higher premiums. Those with clean driving records enjoy the lowest base rates, so even low-mileage drivers with poor records may not benefit from the same savings.

Mile Auto Insurance Rates by State

Mile Auto monthly insurance rates across the U.S. average from $44 to $225 per month, depending on mileage and driver profile. Coverage is only available in 11 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.

Some of these states, including Texas and California, are known for higher-than-average insurance rates. Mile Auto can help cut costs for low-mileage drivers living in these states. However, while its per-mile pricing offers flexibility, drivers with higher mileage may not see the same savings as other insurance models.

While other providers may offer slightly lower rates for certain age groups, Mile Auto strikes a good balance, particularly for drivers in their 30s to 60s. It has cheap car insurance for seniors, with 65-year-olds paying significantly less than Farmers or Progressive.

Drivers with clean records will see significant savings with Mile Auto, as it generally offers lower rates than traditional insurers. However, for high-risk drivers, including those with violations, the pricing gap between Mile Auto and other companies tends to narrow.

Mile Auto Pay-Per-Mile Car Insurance Pros and Cons

Mile Auto stands out as a modern insurance provider that caters to low-mileage drivers who work from home or have short commutes. Here are the top three advantages to buying Mile Auto car insurance:

  • Positive Customer Review: Mile Auto receives the average number of customer complaints.
  • Affordable Coverage: Mile Auto insurance rates are cheap for low-mileage drivers
  • No Tracking Devices: Mile Auto doesn’t track driver habits, and policyholders only need to submit a picture of their odometer every month.

Its biggest strength is its cheap low-mileage car insurance. Unfortunately, high-mileage drivers will see higher rates. Other disadvantages of Mile Auto pay-per-mile car insurance are:

  • No Discounts: Mile Auto doesn’t offer any car insurance discounts
  • Regional Limitations: Car insurance from Mile Auto is only available in 11 states.

If you’re seeking multi-policy or multi-vehicle discounts in addition to low-mileage savings, you’re better off going with another company.

Why Mile Auto Insurance Stands Out for Low-Mileage Drivers

This Mile Auto Insurance car insurance review found that, while it may not be the cheapest choice for high-mileage or high-risk drivers, Mile Auto provides flexibility and savings for those who drive less than 10,000 miles annually.

For those who don't drive often, Mile Auto's usage-based pricing can still be one of the best car insurance options for saving money, even without the standard discounts typically offered by other insurers.

Michelle Robbins Licensed Insurance Agent

By combining various car insurance coverage options and car insurance discounts, Mile Auto stands out as a cost-effective, customer-friendly insurer, especially in states where it’s available.

Claims department is the absolute worse and it feels like a con company, since only 3-5 people working there. The adjuster is a ghost who I haven’t been able to talk to since my accident, the claims guy was super rude to me and wouldn’t listen to what I had to say stating that he “doesn’t care” and that “he also worked for AllState” and knows how things “work”, which I’m assuming he doesn’t, since he no longer works there. ...

I have a car insured by AllState and never had any issues with them. Anyhow, I report this man who didn’t help and had no manners and no one did nothing about it. The supervisor also didn’t fix my issue and now isn’t answering calls either. Trash company! They gave me a reservation for a rental that no one can locate and the only car they fully cover was broken down, meaning I would have to pay out of pocket for even a cheap nissan which is preposterous, why do I pay almost $500 a month for an insurance of a 9yo car and they can’t even cover a simple compact car? SCAM!!!!!! Stay away from them, get the well known insurance companies and spare the headache.

Just don’t do it!

Stay far far away! They asked for the odometer reading for only one of my cars. I had three insured with them. The next thing I know they charge me the full rate per mile on all cars saying they never received any info. They never asked for all cars in the text. They also don’t tell you what your payment is until the day they plan to deduct it from your account. My payment ended up being over $500 more than I ever paid with my previous company....

Fraudulent company

This company is the worst I've experienced. First time using them and I paid too much to not be insured over a photo of my odometer. I've never been uninsured but I went to this company for the low price but the gimmick is they increase the premium every month. This company shouldn't even be running. Bunch of crooks. And they better return my $190 they stole from me!

Stay Away!

We had three cars and three drivers insured, and removed one of the cars one month before our renewal. I didn't pay attention, but a couple of months later I discovered they literally doubled our premium on the two existing cars, base rate went from $35 to $65 and per-mile went from $.08 to $.14. I called to ask why and they told me I lost the 'multi-car- discount. OK, but I still have two cars insured, and the bottom-line is it costs me *more* t...

OK, but I still have two cars insured, and the bottom-line is it costs me *more* to insure *two* cars than it did to insure *three* cars. Also, my wife was involved in an accident on July 3d and I've been getting the runaround from their 'adjuster' [REDACTED NAME] [REDACTED NAME] for two months. Not only am I getting the runaround, but he is a miserable person to work with. Very short and snotty, if his job was not specifically to screw customers on behalf of the company, he would never get any other type of customer-facing position anywhere else. Miserable, miserable human being. Plus, you have to send in odometer pictures and then an invoice generates, that always seems to be on a Friday and they automatically charge you two days later which is Sunday. There is no chance to contact them over the weekend of there is a problem. This month they only sent me a link to update the odometer for one car, the other was in the shop. I assumed they only sent me the link because they knew the other one was in the shop. Nope - upon receiving the invoice (Friday morning at 1:01AM, the second car (in the shop) was charged 1,240 miles for a total of $214.05. I had to call and managed to reach someone Friday who adjusted the invoice. Had IU not been keeping a hawk-eye on my email that day I would have been charged extra money I was not prepared for, over drafting my account by about $175! Stay away from these crooks, and believe the bad reviews...

THE GOOD AND BAD - WHY I LOVE MILE AUTO

Let me tell you the good and the bad. I find this company after Liberty Mutual went up on a new policy that I had with them. They had quoted me a rate of about $500 for two cars. I went with them only for them to requote my policy and raise it to almost $800 per month!!! I was desperate and to top it off, I was a safe driver who didn't drive much. I went with them only for them to requote my policy and raise it to almost $800 per month!!! I was desperate and to top it off, I was a safe driver who didn't drive much. I have just signed my 2nd policy term and my rate went down again with Mile Auto. My rate for the same two cars now cost me around $205 per month!!!! A savings of almost $600 per month. I love this company. What I don't like, it's hard to get in touch with them. They are only available from around 9 AM to around 5 PM EST - Monday - Friday. I had my insurance cancelled when my debit card was compromised. They could not get payment and it totally slipped my mind. When I got the notice in the mail, I tried to cal. I had to wait until Monday to make payment and reinstate my insurance. The company from my understanding is relatively new. How will they handle a claim or accident only time will tell? I am super happy that I made the switch, saving me $7200 per year, that's crazy good!

Great service and saved a lot of money

I wasn't driving my car much due to the pandemic. When I checked out their rates and coverage this was a much better deal for me given that I am a low mileage driver. I thought I had a good rate with my last company but this one was much better giving my limited use. I ended up with great cover its at a much lower rate. Very easy to deal with.
