What are the most popular cars ever sold?

For a large portion of the world, cars are the primary source of day-to-day transportation. Common alternatives are walking, biking, and taking public transit or a taxi. It’s fairly common for people to take other means of transportation, but there are still vehicles that are more popular than others.

Let’s take a closer look at the most popular cars in the world ever sold.

  • Ford F-Series
  • Honda Civic
  • Ford Model T
  • Honda Accord
  • Volkswagen Passat
  • Chevrolet Impala

These vehicles have been the most popular on the market, and could be considered well known among drivers looking over their options.

What are the most popular cars of all time?

Deciding what car to drive is a pretty personal choice. For millions of people to all make the same choice really says something about each popular vehicle on this list.

The tenth best-selling car of all time on our list has sold 14 million units. That’s nothing to sneeze at, but the best-selling car has sold more than double that amount.

Below, we offer you a look at some of the reasons why so many millions of people have united around these 10 most popular and reliable cars.

#1 – Toyota Corolla

The Corolla has sold an estimated 32 million units in its existence. The standard model 2011 Corolla will run you about $15,900, but at the time of its launch in 1966, it cost just $1,816.

To attest to the extent of its popularity, know that a Corolla is purchased somewhere in the world every 40 seconds. They are manufactured in 16 different countries to meet the global demand for this midsize sedan. This means that finding insurance for a Corolla can be easy.

#2 – Ford F-Series

F-Series trucks have sold around 30 million units since their birth. A standard full-size model 2011 Ford F-Series goes for $22,790, while its 1948 grandpa sold for just $1,239.

The F-Series pickup truck topped the list of best-selling trucks for 31 years and was even the best-selling automobile for a full 23 years.

USA Today notes that the Ford F-Series may be America’s best selling pickup truck overall, but that doesn’t hold true for every state.

#3 – Volkswagen Golf

With total auto sales of about 25 million units, the Golf is a sturdy compact car that gets racier all the time.

The 2012 model is sportier than ever and goes for an MSRP of $17,995, which, while still pretty affordable in the world of new cars, is extravagant compared to its $3,330 price tag in 1974.

The Volkawagen Golf was VW’s first replacement for the Beetle that actually did well.

#4 – Original Volkswagen Beetle

The adorable VW Bug has captured the hearts of about 21 million people, although some Bug-lovers might own more than one, given the variations that exist within the series.

It’s not quite such cheerful news that a significant portion of the funding for the initial production of this popular car came from Hitler’s Third Reich, though. A Bug in 1938 would have cost about $1,290, compared to $19,795 for the sleek, sporty 2012 New Beetle.

#5 – Ford Escort (United Kingdom version)

The UK Ford Escort has sold about 20 million units worldwide. Escort moved to the United States after a successful run in the United Kingdom.

In 1967, one of these would be about $1,316, but by 2002 they were around $12,815. The UK Escort is still the best-selling car of all time in the United Kingdom.

#6 – Honda Civic

This small, ubiquitous car has sold 17 million units so far. It’s also one of the most commonly stolen cars: #2 in the United States in 2010.

A 1973 Civic cost about $2,150 and a 2012 version boasts an MSRP of $15,805. Protect your investment by getting an alarm or other security devices.

#7 – Ford Model T

One of the most impressive cars on the list, the Model T was only manufactured between 1908 and 1927. Still, it sold about 16.5 million units.

Henry Ford automated the production line for his cars while the Model T was still being made, and by 1914 it took just 93 minutes to put together a Model T from start to finish. One of these cost $366 in 1928. They’re worth about $28,000 today.

A 1976 Accord was $3,999 MSRP, while a 2012 model is $21,380. Car insurance for a Honda Accord can be easy to find given its popularity.

#9 – Volkswagen Passat

With 14.1 million units sold, the VW Passat used to go by Santana, Dasher, and Quantum. This German car was $4,110 in 1974, and today you can take home a brand new standard model 2012 Passat for about $19,995.

#10 – Chevrolet Impala

This classic Chevrolet Impala sold 1,074,925 units in the year 1964 alone and has a total auto sales record of about 14 million. A 1958 Impala was $2,586 back in the day, but they’re still being made for 2012 at an MSRP of $25,645.

The Impala is known for its twin sets of three tail lights.

What are the most popular cars in the world?

It seems that the top ten best-selling cars of all time are a pretty good split between the practical and the must-have.

The boat-like, boxy, tail-finned Impala was probably not a practical buy, but if you were a high school student in the 60’s, there probably weren’t too many cooler cars to use for cruising. The F-Series is like the modern equivalent. Not too fuel efficient, but a lot of fun to drive.

There are also the standard cars, much like the Corolla and the Accord. They go from point A to point B without breaking down too much, and they’re more affordable. What they lack in style they make up for in safety.

Whatever your strategy for picking a car, knowing the trends and what vehicles are popular can help lead you to a more stable choice.
