  • American Family Insurance provides automobile, home, and life insurance
  • The company offers several discounts on car insurance
  • The best way for you to discover whether American Family Insurance is right for you is to speak to one of their independent agents

American Family Insurance started out as Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in 1927. The founders of the company wanted to offer farmers discounted insurance because they were a low-risk community in terms of the chance of accidents.

Today, American Family Insurance sells auto, home, and life insurance, and annuities for individuals, as well as health and business insurance to businesses.

According to the company, it continues to seek out ways to offer discounts to its customers so that it can provide the lowest cost for their premiums.

American Family car insurance is not available directly from the company. In fact, its policies are only available in 19 states.

American Family’s policies are sold through independent agents, of which there are about 3,000 available.

Bundled Insurance Discounts offered by American Family

American Family offers discounts in three categories: bundled insurance discounts, auto insurance discounts, and home insurance discounts.

This article will discuss the bundled and auto insurance discounts.

The first thing you would find if you were to review the discounts available on the American Family website is that all of its bundled insurance plans state that you could, might, or may receive a discount, not that you will receive a discount.

Knowing this is important to ensure that you aren’t surprised if you don’t qualify for a discount.

The discounts offered in the bundled insurance category are:

  • Auto & Home Discount
  • Auto & Home Premium Advantage Discount
  • Auto & Life Discount
  • Cycle & Home Discount
  • Home & Auto Discount
  • Home & Umbrella Discount

In the case of the auto & home and the home & auto discounts, you might be thinking these are the same thing and, in essence, they are.

They are simply presented this way as if an auto policy owner was considering buying homeowners insurance and vice versa.

Car Insurance Discounts offered by American Family

The availability of the auto insurance discounts below varies from state to state, as do the eligibility requirements. The company does not stipulate what discounts are available where.

If you’re interested, you’ll have to check with an independent agent in your area.

The discounts offered for auto insurance include:

Some of the discounts mentioned above are self-explanatory and are common among most carriers. Others require a little explanation of what they really have to offer.

For example, there is the EarlyBird discount.

The EarlyBird discount is a discount program that allows those of you who have a policy with another insurance company to switch over to American Family and get a discount.

Your current policy must be in force for at least seven days and there must be at least seven days left on the policy before you switch.

The switch and save discount is specific to competitors approved by American Family Insurance, although they don’t provide a list of those competitors.

The TimeAway discount is for existing customers only.

When they have a child under the age of 24 that attends a college that is at least 100 miles away from home, then they will receive a discount on the insurance for that child, so long as they didn’t take the car with them to school.

American Family does not list what the potential discount percentages might be. In addition, they don’t say what discounts are available where.

Saving the Most Money

The problem with American Family Car Insurance is that they don’t guarantee any discounts and they don’t say what it is that determines whether you qualify for those discounts.

Your best bet is to speak with an agent before you consider purchasing insurance from this company and learn what their criteria might be.

In addition, you should always compare car insurance prices from multiple companies.

If you don’t, there is no way to ensure that you are getting the lowest price. If you are already speaking to an agent, then you can ask them about other insurance companies as well.

If, however, you want to get a completely independent decision about the right insurance for your needs and find out how you can save the most money, then the Internet is the tool that you need.

Free quote tools allow you to compare the rates of many top and small local companies so that you can get the best price.
