- If you are an active member of the Armed Forces, you should speak to your insurance provider about a discount
- Your discount and coverage could change if you are deployed overseas or if you enter the reserves
- You should also speak to your insurance provider about other discounts for which you may be eligible
Members of the armed forces get a ton of discounts on everything from food to mortgage rates. Coincidentally, many enlisted soldiers can also qualify for army car insurance discounts. If you’re looking at VA home loans, you’ll need to meet certain standards (a certain amount of time in the service) to qualify. If you’re looking for an auto insurance policy, you could start shopping as soon as you enlist.

The exact criteria differ slightly for each individual car insurance company, but for the most part, there are a few things that you will need to have in order to get a discount.
What paperwork do you need to qualify for military discounts on your auto insurance premium?
You can be in any branch of the military, but to qualify for a discount on your auto insurance, you will need to supply your insurance company proof of enlistment. This is true whether you’re going through USAA (which only offers armed forces insurance) or regular insurers that offer additional discounts to military members.
In most situations, you might be able to have your commanding officer make a phone call on your behalf. But for most car insurance companies you will need to supply documentation that lists your name, rank, and the time that you are to be enlisted.
This allows insurance companies to determine how long you will be eligible to receive any discounts limited to your active years. With USAA or another auto insurer that only serves military members, they’re just verifying your initial eligibility.
If you’re retired, in the reserves, etc., some car insurers may offer different types of discounts compared to what they’d offer active-duty military.

What happens to my army car insurance discount if I am deployed overseas?
In the event of deployment, you will still be able to keep your car insurance discount so long as you maintain some type of car insurance coverage. This is especially true if you have an open loan on your vehicle.
If you allow your policy to lapse or cancel it altogether, there is a very good chance that the army car insurance discount will no longer be available to you.
Usually, members of the armed forces and their immediate family will qualify for the army car insurance discount. So if you have a blood relative that is willing to take responsibility for your car while you are away, you can keep your car insured in their name. You can also talk to your lender about temporarily removing your collision coverage if you plan on putting your car in storage while you’re gone.
If you do want to keep your army discount and you will be driving another vehicle overseas, it may be possible for you to transfer your policy to where you are stationed.
The particulars will depend on:
- what country you will be serving in
- the length of your deployment
- whether your main activities will be on a military base
You can talk to your insurance agent and get more information on how car insurance discounts can be applied to soldiers that are deployed.
How can you maximize your military auto insurance discounts?
The specific amount of money that you will be able to save on your army car insurance will work just like any discount.
For instance, if you have been enlisted for a number of years, have a safe driving record, and drive a car with a relatively low insurance risk factor, you will save more than a newly enlisted single driver with a sports car. Insurance for veterans may come with its own perks. While you’re not actively serving, this means you’ve put in a certain amount of service and earned set benefits.
Belonging to military associations, having an account with a military credit union, or even being in a family with enlisted soldiers can increase your savings as well.
Believe it or not, while an army car insurance discount can be significant, insurance companies will usually give you more discounts based on the same factors that they rate civilians with, including:
- Marital status – Married people almost always save more on all types of insurance products.
- Education – The higher your education level, the more money that insurance companies will take off of your policies. Bachelor’s degrees typically come with significant discounts wherever you go.
- Profession – Even in the military, some branches will be considered to be of a higher insurance risk than others. Insurance products are just as diverse as the service members who need them.
- Driving record – Just like civilians, safe drivers with few instances of accidents and tickets will get bigger discounts. If you have a lot of tickets or accidents or more severe records.
- Type of car – Older cars may be cheaper to replace, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re cheaper to insure. Many insurance companies give discounts based on safety features as well. So a newer car could save you money.
While getting a discount on your car insurance for being an enlisted soldier is a small reward, it is just one of the many perks that you will have available to you during the course of your military career. This is true whether you go liability only or if you pay for comprehensive coverage, collision, and other optional coverages available to you.
Make sure that you ask about every discount that you might qualify for in order to get the most out of your insurance coverage.
