An interesting fact for this car is that each 1961 Ferrari 250GT SWB was custom-made to the buyer’s specifications.

Each of the 56 cars is unique, making valuation difficult to estimate. This vehicle sold for more than double its estimated price at auction, which will undoubtedly have an effect on future sales.

Previously owned by the actor James Coburn, this vehicle has 280 HP, reaches 0-60 in 8.0 seconds, and has a top speed of 149 MPH. This chassis number 2377 GT is the thirteenth of just fifty-six built for the road. A replica of this vehicle was made famous in the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

#4 – 1931 Duesenberg Model J Long-Wheelbase Coupe

Sale Price/Date/Location: This 1931 Duesenberg Model J Long-Wheelbase Coupe sold for $10,340,000 on August 21, 2011, in Pebble Beach, CA.

Valued for its history and superiority of design, the 1931 Duesenberg Model J will retain its value.

Individual ownership history and design variations have an effect on the value. Other Model J’s with varying production years have sold for $250,000 and up.

Built exclusively for California heir and playboy, Captain George Whittell Jr., this Duesenberg Model J Long-Wheelbase Coupe was purchased for $17,000 in 1931. Designed by Franklin Quick Hershey, who later became a top designer for General Motors, this car has an estimated 265hp with a top speed of 116 mph.

#5 – 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe

Sale Price/Date/Location: This 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe fetched $9,800,000 on November 17, 1987, in London.

Owners of the 1931 Bugatti Royale Coupe are an elite group, as only 6 of these magnificent machines were ever produced.

The high collectability of this rare and luxurious vehicle make it highly prized and stands alone as one of the most valuable cars in history.

The 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe was designed to contain a massive engine originally used to power aircrafts. Marketed as a luxury car to rival the illustrious Rolls-Royce, this 15-foot behemoth has a 300-HP engine with a top speed of about 99 mph.

#6 – 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster

The 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster is considered a prime example of the superior engineering of pre-war German automobiles. Easily commanding seven figures at auction, they will hold their value in the future.

Of the 400 Mercedes-Benz 540K’s produced, only twenty-six were Special Roadsters. With an instrument panel of mother-of-pearl and luxurious leather seating, these two-seater masterpieces of German engineering produce 180hp and have a top speed of 106 mph.

#7 – 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Spyder

The 1962 Ferrari 330 was the last Testa Rossa built and the last TR to win Le Mans.

#8 – 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster

#9 – 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante Coupe

Sale Price/Date/Location: This first production 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante Coupe sold for $7,920,000 on August 17, 2008, in Pebble Beach, CA.

The Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante is one of the rarest collectible cars in existence.

With mystery surrounding the prototype’s fate, and one almost totally destroyed by a train (though it has since been restored), the remaining two mostly original cars are highly sought after.

The Bugatti Type 57  has been ranked as the second most valuable car in the world, rumored to have been sold privately in excess of $30,000,000!

Introduced in 1934, the Bugatti Type 57 was offered in several body styles. The most exclusive of these styles was the “Atlantic” two-door coupe.

Only six Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupes were produced, making them very rare and collectible also as a piece of racing history.

It has an illustrious career of winning several FIA circuit races, and has the distinction of beating the Ferrari GTO on its home turf, securing the 1965 FIA World Championship.

#11 – 1929 Mercedes-Benz 38/250 SSK

Sale Price/Date/Location: The 1929 Mercedes-Benz 38/250 SSK sold for $7,443,070 on September 3, 2004, in Goodwood, Sussex, UK.

Few examples of the 1929 Mercedes-Benz 38/250 SSK survive intact.

With its engine designed by the famous Ferdinand Porsche, this vehicle is prized as a collectible.

This 1929 Mercedes-Benz 38/250 SSK came up for sale after 64 years of being hidden away and preserved by a private collector. During its day it was the fastest sports car around, with a top speed of over 118 mph and a 250hp engine.

#12 – 1904 Rolls-Royce 10hp Two-seater

Sale Price/Date/Location: Sold for $7,254,290 on December 3, 2007, in London, UK.

As the fourth car produced by the legendary Rolls-Royce and the oldest Rolls-Royce still in existence, this vehicle is one of the most valuable cars in its class.

As an early remnant of an icon of car manufacturing, this car is one of a kind. The partnership of racer and entrepreneur Charles Rolls with the electrical and mechanical engineer Henry Royce resulted in a car making giant known for luxury and performance.

This 10hp two-seater had a top speed of about 40 MPH. Found in a farm building in 1950, the car had to be restored to its present condition. Three later models are known to survive.

#13 – 1959 Ferrari 250LWB California Spider Competizione

Sale Price/Date/Location: Sold for $7,260,000 on August 14, 2010in Pebble Beach, CA.

The 1959 Ferrari 250 California Spyder appears to be rising in value as enthusiasts have been paying more than the estimated value in recent auctions.

Only 45 were produced before being replaced by a short wheel base version, making this car relatively rare. Even specimens in marginal condition are fetching prices in excess of one million dollars.

This 1959 Ferrari 250LWB California Spyder Competizione won 5th overall and third in its class at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1960. This two-seater convertible was designed for export to the United States. The powerful V12 engine produces 240hp, goes from 0-6o in 7 seconds, with a top speed of 140 mph.

#14 – 1962 Ferrari 250 LM

Sale Price/Date/Location: The 1962 Ferrari 250 LM sold for $6,979,225 on May 18, 2008, in Maranello, Emilia-Romagna, Italy.

There were only 32 Ferrari LM’s produced in 1962-1963, but the model was so popular that many replicas were built.

The replicas carry the same serial numbers as the original, creating some confusion for collectors. Original production models reliably sell for several million dollars at auction. A great classic car insurance company is Hagerty Insurance. They have been known for protecting some of the best classic cars on the market.

A member of the Ferrari 250 GTO line of racing automobiles, the 1962 Ferrari 250 LM was designed to compete in FIA competitions, but was rejected by the FIA because its engine had no road going counterpart. As a result, the 250 LM ran in the more competitive prototype class, where it won several titles.

With a 320hp engine, the 250 LM goes from 0-60 in 6.1 seconds and has a top speed of 183 mph. The 250 LM won Ferrari’s last overall Le Mans title in 1965.

#15 – 1933 Alfa-Romeo 8C2300 Monza

Sale Price/Date/Location: The 1933 Alfa-Romeo 8C2300 Monza sold for $6,710,000 on August 15, 2010, in Pebble Beach, CA.

Only ten Monza-version 2300’s were built. The Alfa-Romeo 8C2300 has an illustrious record at the races, but because of this active career, few of the models survive intact, making this vehicle highly prized and worth several million dollars.

Named in commemoration of the 1931 Grand Prix at Monza, the 1931 8C2300 Monza was a two-seater version of the winning model. This particular automobile was a winner at the 1947 Sports Car Championship and continues to race today.

The 1930’s were Alfa-Romeo’s finest racing years, with the 2300C winning several times in the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio, and the Le Mans in addition to the victory at Monza. With 180hp, the 2300C had a top speed of 140 mph.

#16 – 1931 Bugatti Royale Berline de Voyager

Sale Price/Date/Location: Sold for $6,500,000 on June 15, 1986, in Reno, NV.

Along with its brother the Kellner Coupe, number five on this list, the 1931 Bugatti Royale is the cream of the crop for rich collectors.

Although the 1931 Bugatti Royale de Voyager was built with royalty in mind, no royals ever purchased one. In fact, very few could afford the vehicle that was designed to rival Rolls-Royce for opulence and luxury.

This giant car, weighing over 7,500 pounds, would cost $700,000 in today’s dollars. The 300hp engine uses most of its power to move the Bugatti’s giant bulk, reaching a top speed of 99 mph.

#17 – 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Spider

Sale Price/Date/Location: Sold for $6,490,000 on August 17, 2002, in Monterey, CA.

As the only one of its kind and with its record as the last Testa Rossa to be built and the last TR to win the Le Mans 24-Hour, the 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Spyder is one of the most valuable cars in both monetary value and historical significance.

This car sold for nearly $3,000,000 more than it had sold for just five years prior, showing that the market for collectible cars of this type are appreciating very rapidly.

The last Testa Rossa ever built, the Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Spyder is the culmination of Enzo Ferrari’s experience designing the winning 250 line of racecars. This concept car was engineered with a 4 liter engine that produced 400hp, with a 0-60 speed of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 158.5 mph.

#18 – 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione

Sale Price/Date/Location: The 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione sold for $5,692,000 on May 20, 2007, Maranello, Emilia-Romagna, Italy.

Only two of the three Ferrari340/375 MM Berlinetta Competiziones produced are still in existence.

As a specimen of beauty and performance, along with its winning race career, this rare vehicle is very valuable to collectors.

Originally built with 340 HP, the Ferrari 340/375 was later converted to produce a higher revving engine with 375hp and a top speed of 139 mph.

Competing with the higher horsepower of the Alfa Romeo on the racetrack, the Ferrari made up for this lack with fuel efficiency.

After some struggles with disqualifications and mechanical problems, it won the Spa 24 Hour and continued to win several other races during its run.

#19 – 1966 Ferrari 330 P3

Most expensive cars in the world

Sale Price/Date/Location: Later restored to its original P3 incarnation, the 1966 Ferrari P3 chassis # 0844 sold for $5,616,000 on August 20, 2000, in Monterey, CA.

The P3 0844 is one of the most valuable race cars still being entered in races today and is the only one of the P3’s to be raced professionally.

Its rarity as one of only three originals makes it a highly collectible piece of racing history. Considered one of the most beautiful race cars ever produced by Ferrari, there are only three 330 P3’s in existence. Built to compete with the new Ford GT40 that was giving Ferrari competition, the P3 won races at Monza and Spa, but lost to Ford at Le Mans 24 Hour.

Ferrari then restyled the bodywork and replaced the engine rated with 450hp, and dubbed it a P4. All three P3’s were modified, two of which were sold privately to finance more P4 production, and the third was kept for racing.

Ferrari then placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the Daytona 24 hour, on Ford’s home turf. First and second places were taken by the new P4’s, and the third place winner was the retooled P3 0844. The P3 had 420hp and a top speed of 183 mph.

#20 – 1958 Ferrari 412S

Sale Price/Date/Location: The 1958 Ferrari 412 sold for $5,610,000 on August 19, 2006, in Monterey, CA.

The 1958 Ferrari 412S is the only one of its kind. Its rarity and racing history ensures that the 412S will rank as one of the most valuable racecars ever built.

The 1958 Ferrari 412S was built to compete in the United States on the SCCA circuit and boasts the most powerful front-engine Ferrari ever, with 440hp.

The 412 S placed first overall at the Riverside Times Grand Prix, setting a track record of 181 mph. The 412S scored two winning titles in 1959, and continued to place well into the 1960’s. Its current owner still shows and races the 412S today.

#21 – 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake

Sale Price/Date/Location: The one of a kind 1966 Shelby Cobra Super Snake sold for $5,500,000 on January 21, 2007, in Scottsdale, AZ.

Designed and built exclusively for Carroll Shelby, this one of a kind competition roadster is all original in pristine condition.

It is one of the most valuable of the Shelby automobiles and is sure to remain a coveted collectible. Carroll Shelby’s personal driving vehicle, the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake has a massive 800hp engine that zips from zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 165 mph.

This vehicle is the only one of two Super Snakes produced; the other was destroyed when its owner drove it off a cliff, killing himself and destroying the vehicle.

#22 – 1961 Ferrari 250SWB Competizione

Sale Price/Date/Location: This fully restored 1961 Ferrari 250SWB Berlinetta Competizione with original body and engine sold for 5,550,000 August 15, 2010 in Pebble Beach, CA.

There were approximately 20 1961 250 SWB’s built.

Dubbed the “SEFAC Hot Rod” after the Ferrari team name (Scuderia Enzo Ferrari Auto Corse), the 1961 Ferrari 250SWB Competizione chassis 2845GT debuted at the 10th Tour de France where it placed third overall.

This model was first in class at the 1961 Le Mans and has an impressive racing history overall. With a stripped down interior, Plexiglass windows, and a TR engine, this car was a lighter version of previous SWB competition models with 300hp and a top speed of 168 mph.

#23 – 1960 Ferrari 250SWB Berlinetta Competizione

This 1960 Ferrari 250SWB Berlinetta Competizione was fully restored to its original condition by Ferrari Classiche and includes extensive paperwork and provenance records to verify its authenticity.

As one of only 40 ever produced, and after a painstaking restoration that took over a year, this pristine 250 is considered a bargain at its sale price.

The Ferrari 250SWB series of racecars dominated US and European tracks in the early 60’s. Winning the Tour de France auto race in 1960, 1961, and 1962, this dual-purpose vehicle could be driven from the street to the track. The 250 had a 280hp engine with a top speed of 167 mph.

#24 – 1962 Ferrari 250SWB California Spider

Sale Price/Date/Location: Fully restored and certified by Ferrari Classiche, the 1962 Ferrari 250SWB California Spyder sold for $5,115,000 August 16, 2009, in Pebble Beach, CA.

This touring vehicle was made even more popular by the long list of celebrities who drove one.

The 3163GT is particularly desirable with its extensive restoration and rare hardtop. Well-kept models will reliably command seven figures at auction.

During the production period from 1960 to 1962, 54 Ferrari 250SWB California Spyders were made. This chassis #3163GT was a covered headlight steel version built for the road and included a very rare factory hardtop. Street versions had a 240hp engine with a top speed of 168 mph and 0-60 speed of 5.3 seconds.

#25 – 1930 Bentley Speed Six Tourer

Sale Price/Date/Location: “Old Number Two” sold for $5,109,665 July 23, 2004, in Le Mans, France.

Escaping damage during WWII and retaining its original color and upholstery, “Old Number Two” is one of only two Speed Six Works racers that remain in mostly original condition.

“Old Number One” was rebodied after being wrecked. The last of the Bentley racecars, the 1930 Bentley Speed Six is renowned for its fabulously successful racing history and its rarity.

Bentley founder considered the Speed Six his favorite model. Of the 200 Speed Sixes produced, three were built for racing, and are among the most coveted of the early Bentley models. The first, LB2332, was dubbed “Old Number One,” won the first Brooklands Double Twelve race in 1929, and went on to win the Le Mans 24 Hours.

This inspired the construction of HM2868 and HM2869, known as “Old Number Two and Three,” respectively. All three entered the 1930 Le Mans; Three did not finish the race, but One and Two finished first and second, securing the Bentley name in racing history.

The Speed Sixes reached a top speed of 89 mph with a 200hp engine. All three enjoyed a winning season before being retired.

#26 – 1960 Jaguar E2A

Sale Price/Date/Location: The 1960 Jaguar E2A sold for $4,957,000 on August 15, 2008, in Carmel, CA.

Although most prototypes at Jaguar were usually scrapped, this one managed to survive the chopping block and remains in its original condition with factory paint and interior.

Along with its unique racing history, this one-off automobile offers all the features of a collectible-provenance, rarity, and pristine condition.

Described as the “missing link” between D-Type and E-Type Jaguar models, this single prototype was driven by four great racecar drivers and was later sold to a private buyer, who kept the car until its record-breaking sale in 2008. The experimental car was tested at several races such as the 1960 Le Mans 24 Hours. It had a 293 horsepower engine and reached a top speed of 194 mph.

#27 – 1960 Ferrari 250SWB California Spyder

Sale Price/Date/Location: The 1960 Ferrari 250SWB California Spyder sold for $4,950,000 on January 17, 2009, in Scottsdale, AZ.

Well-maintained and original examples of the 1960 Ferrari 250SWB California Spyder always command the highest prices and sell very well at auction.

Although copies bearing the same serial and chassis numbers make it difficult to determine its authenticity, an expert can discern the real from the fake.

Replacing the Ferrari 250 LWB with this SWB version, this popular car in the 250 series is a well-known and beloved automobile that collectors regularly pay record prices for. The 1960 Ferrari 250SWB California Spyder has many imitators, but nothing can compare to the original engine with its 280hp engine that powered the car to a top speed of 149 mph and could reach 60 in 8.0 seconds.

#28 – 1959 Ferrari 250GT LWB California Competizione Spyder

Sale Price/Date/Location: The 1959 Ferrari 250GT LWB California Competizione Spyder sold for $4,950,000 August 18, 2007, in Monterey, CA.

A very rare example of the finest racing machines that Ferrari ever built the 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Competizione Spyder is also highly prized for its beauty.

A car such as this should be insured for no less than $5,000,000. This 1959 Ferrari 250GT LWB California Competizione Spyder 1451GT is one of only seven original alloy-bodied examples in existence. In the 1959 Le Mans 24 hour the Ferrari was fifth place overall and won first in class. The 180hp engine was capable of reaching 167 mph.

#29 – 1939 Talbot-Lago T150C SS Teardrop Coupe

Sale Price/Date/Location: 1939 Talbot-Lago T150C SS Teardrop coupe commanded $4,847,000 on August 14, 2008, in Carmel, CA.

Only 30 Talbot-Lago T150 SS’s were made, of which only four are the Pourtout Aerocoupé style, making this vehicle exceedingly rare and highly prized by collectors.

The beauty of the design paired with its performance puts this car on the dream list for any collector of fine automobiles. Although it was built for racing, the 1939 Talbot-Lago T150C SS Teardrop coupe was designed to look beautiful from any angle.

#32 – 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster

The third 540K on the list of most expensive cars, this 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster shared the spotlight with a 1937 version of the same model that become the record-holder for the most expensive Mercedes-Benz ever sold at auction.

The 540K came standard with a supercharged 5 liter engine that produced 180hp and had a top speed of 106 mph. Each Special Roadster was built to order with custom details made according to the buyer’s specifications, so each is completely unique.

33. 1964 Aston Martin DB5

James Bond’s 1964 Aston Martin DB5 is of value as a pop icon and as a vehicle of exquisite craftsmanship.
