Every year, the Highway Loss Data Institute publishes their report on the most stolen cars. Based on their past findings, we’re going to predict what cars will make the list of top ten most stolen cars in 2012.
The cost of the losses that insurance companies pay due to theft is reflected in rising car insurance costs for consumers.

What to Know About Stolen Cars
Here are some things to remember from IIHS.org on the HLDI findings:
- Losses are based only on cars insured by companies that report losses to the HLDI.
- Statistics do not differentiate between cars stolen and property stolen from cars.
- Ratings are adjusted to reflect highly-targeted vehicles rather than commonly driven cars.
If you’re wondering what you can do to protect your property from car thieves, we’ve got some tips for that too.
However, if they really want your car, they’re probably going to get it.
It’s as simple as pulling your prized possession up onto a trailer and hauling it away. Pretty scary, right?
Maybe you should avoid buying any of these cars that we think will be among the top ten most stolen in 2012.
We’ll give you some more safety tips to prevent your car from becoming an IIHS statistic and off of the most stolen cars 2012 list later.
Here are our predictions for the top ten most stolen cars in 2012:
10. Nissan Maxima
It seems like Nissan has beefed up the security systems to keep the Maxima off of the most stolen cars in 2011 list.
Hopefully, for all Maxima owners, this trend continues, but thieves do love the options for breaking this car down and selling it one part at a time.
9. Hummer H2
Whether it’s sticking out from the average parking lot crowd or being filled with all kind of expensive extras, the Hummer is always going to be a target for thieves looking to cash in on a quick night’s work.
You had better park yours in a well-lit area, or in a garage with a parking attendant when you go out, or it could be the next stolen car to go.
8. Dodge Charger
The Charger isn’t just stylish, its HEMI engine packs a serious punch, too. Many of the Chargers have “HEMI” printed right on the side!
Thieves love the cars with these extra powerful, extra pricey engines. Maybe this is why Dodge Charger car insurance rates tend to be higher than many other cars.
Just make sure you have the right amount of security to protect your Charger becoming one of the top stolen cars 2012.
7. Chrysler 300
Coming in at number seven for the most stolen vehicles 2012 is the Chrysler 300. While many drivers loved the “Baby Bentley” remix of the Chrysler 300, it was inevitable that thieves also took notice.
People love the upgrades on these, and that just makes the car thieves see more dollar signs. Oh yeah, a HEMI engine might attract even more attention.
6. GMC Yukon
People love the Yukon because it has so much room! Bikes, luggage, sports equipment – you name it, and the Yukon can handle it.
Unfortunately, that means car thieves are going to enjoy getting a hold of these beasts because it means they’re more likely to be able to sell off all the extras. For these reasons, the Yukon make our top 10 most stolen cars 2012 list.

5. Chevrolet Silverado
Pickup trucks have been troublesome for the car insurance companies of late.
Why? Manufacturers were slower putting in extra security features on new trucks than they were in new cars, making it easier for thieves to do their dirty work. Not only that, but an open truck bed filled with valuables is often targeted even when the rest of the truck is left alone.
The Silverado marks the beginning of a few trucks we think will be high on the top ten stolen cars 2012.
4. GMC Sierra
Drivers tend to have given their loyalty to one particular car or truck, but thieves only see things in terms of money. The GMC Sierra can mean a lot of cash for a thief, and that’s why it’s our #4 on the 2012 most stolen cars list.
3. Chevrolet Avalanche
Not only does the Avalanche have the truck bed for more carrying space, it has plenty of room in the front for your expensive goodies and upgrades.
If you don’t think car thieves will notice your Avalanche parked on a dark side street, think again. You had better go for some additional security options to keep your valuables safe!
Are you starting to see a trend? Trucks seem to be some of the most commonly stolen cars.
2. Ford F-Series 4WD
Ford’s 4WD options: F-250, F-350, and F-450 all made the most stolen car 2012 list, definitely not the kind of popularity that Ford was hoping for!
Whether it was due to a lack of security features, or just high-quality components that attracted the best car thieves, something needs to be done to bring down their theft rates!
1. Cadillac Escalade
You probably saw this one coming. The number one stolen car is the Cadillac Escalade. The Escalade has been one of the most popular stolen cars over the years.
Whether it’s celebrities hauling their entourage with them wherever they go, or soccer moms with DVD players in every passenger seat for the long road trip, Escalade owners tend to put a lot of money into getting the best for their rides.
All those extras make car thieves even happier to get a hold of these oversized piggy banks!
Escalade owners should take every precaution to make sure their only worry is keeping the gas tank filled. If you have an Escalade, make sure you take the necessary security precautions. Being one of the most frequently stolen cars means it has some risk.
Car Theft Prevention
Well, there you have it. While we’d love to see car theft rates drop to zero in 2012, it’s just not going to happen. Hopefully, manufacturers will continue to add security features to prevent theft and help save their customers’ money and peace of mind.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the rate of cars being stolen in the U.S. is sitting at nearly two thefts every minute.
Those are some pretty intense car theft statistics if you sit down and think about it.
Whether you live in a hotspot for car theft or just occasionally drive into the city, you should keep in mind some of these tips to keep your car and other valuables safe and of our top ten most stolen vehicles 2012 predictions:
- Do NOT leave your keys in your car or on a tire.
- Hide valuables from view when you leave your car if you can’t take them with you.
- Try to park in a garage if at all possible, or in a brightly-lit area if no garage is close.
