Here's what you need to know...

  • Carlos Slim turned a family business into a telecommunications empire
  • Bill Gates is a big fan of the 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe
  • Warren Buffet knows how to pinch pennies by keeping his Lincoln Town Car in mint condition

We all love stories of the rich and self-indulgent. After all, we’d all love to own a Bugatti Veyron, even if the mileage is terrible and auto insurance for it costs a fortune. But, we wonder: do the world’s richest people actually drive the world’s most expensive cars?

We did some research and found that the richest people out there can have some surprisingly modest tastes.

Be sure to check out the FREE car insurance comparison tool above for the best rates on your ride! Enter your zip code above to get started!

Carlos Helu

Net Worth: $74 Billion

Born in Mexico City, Carlos Slim has turned a family business into a telecommunications empire.

Carlos is known for enjoying luxury, but he also loves buying cars that last. His navy blue Mercedes is one example of this. We just hope he has adequate Mercedes car insurance.

Bill Gates

Net Worth: $56 Billion

Gates needs no introduction. He’s the guy you curse whenever your computer crashes.

The 1988 Porsche 959 coupe had never been subject to federal emissions tests or crash tests. So for Gates to drive it, Bill Clinton had to pass a special law. Wonder if Bill Gates had certain car insurance rules changed for his car also?

Warren Buffet

Net Worth: $50 billion

Warren Buffet is world-famous as the investor’s investor, who grew a small investment egg into billions.

Buffet is not only famous for being rich, he’s famous for being thrifty since he hasn’t owned a new car in decades. He keeps his 2006 Lincoln Town Car in mint condition.

Bernard Arnault

Net Worth: $41 billion

A French business magnate, Arnault has interests in everything from high fashion (he owns Dior) to grocery stores, with a stake in France’s biggest supermarket chain.

His garage is pretty hard to find. Arnault mostly seems to enjoy boats and limousines. Apparently, he has an affection for cars like the Lotus Elise. We wonder if it’s such a good idea to give a liquor magnate such a fast car.

Larry Ellison

Net Worth: $33 Billion

Ellison, a college dropout, built his business, Oracle, around databases provided to the government. If you’ve ever worked with a major corporation, you’ve used Oracle’s software.

Ellison owns many, many exotic cars, but the one that’s obviously his favorite is the Acura NSX. How do we know it’s his favorite? He gives them away as gifts during their production year.

Lakshmi Mittal

Net Worth: $31.9 billion

You may not know the name, but you definitely know the produc. Mittal makes so much steel that one in five cars across the world have at least some of his steel in it.

Like most Europeans, Mittal doesn’t brag about his personal wealth too much, but he does have a taste for understated luxury. You better believe he has the best luxury car insurance money can buy!

Amancio Ortega

Net Worth: $31 billion

This fashion magnate started out as a gofer running shirts across a department store. Now he owns some of the biggest clothing chains in Europe.

A BMW Series 7, although he owns several others. Hey, if you want a car that lasts, go with the absolute best! If you want to protect your BMW, make sure you have the proper BMW car insurance!

Eike Batista

Net Worth: $30 Billion

One of Brazil’s richest men, he largely made his money in mining, but owns diverse business interests across the country…and rivals Larry Ellison for his lavish spending.

The F1 McLaren. How much does he love this supercar? So much that he has several of them…included one parked in his living room! With a car in his living room, he had to look into combining house and car insurance.

Mukesh Ambani

Net Worth: $27 billion

A member of the board of Bank of America, Ambani owns one of the biggest and most diverse business conglomerates in India, and Forbes expects him to be the world’s richest man by 2014.

The 2011 Maybach 62, one of the most expensive cars in the world. Rumor has it that Ambani’s Maybach was specially customized for him by Mercedes, but nobody knows exactly how it was changed.

With a Maybach 62, Ambani competes with most celebrity cars for the most expensive car in the world!

Christy Walton

Net Worth: $26.5 billion

You know Christy and her family very well … they own the famous and controversial Wal-Mart, one of the biggest and most profitable retailers in the world.

Sam Walton was famous for keeping the same pickup truck long after he became one of the richest men in America, and the Walton family has continued the tradition. Hopefully, they were able to keep the Ford F150 car insurance costs around the same as Sam Walton.

Li Ka-Shing

Net Worth: $26 billion

One of the richest men in Hong Kong, Li Ka-Shing owns some of the most profitable companies in Asia, and regularly competes for the title of Asia’s richest man.

Ka-Shing has a weakness for Ferraris; he owns several, but they aren’t showpieces. He regularly drives them around Hong Kong and is even occasionally seen running a personal errand with them.

Karl Albrecht

Net Worth: $25.5 billion

Albrecht is a grocery magnate. You might know him from one of two stores, the popular and expanding Aldi, and the niche but ever-growing Trader Joe’s.

The 2011 BMW Series 3 sedan. Albrecht, like his family, is very private, so it’s difficult to know how attached he is … or even if he owns more cars than just the one. It makes us wonder if he ever compared the BMW vs. the Mercedes.

Stefan Persson

Net Worth: $24.5 billion

You know Persson by his company: the ever-popular chain for the budget savvy and fashion conscious, H&M.

The Volvo S80 sedan. Never let it be said he doesn’t support his hometown business! It makes us think that he probably supports his hometown car insurance company also!

Vladimir Lisin

Net Worth: $24 billion

Whatever Lakshmi Mittel doesn’t supply with steel, Vladimir Lisin does: he owns Novolipetsk Steel, which provides steel across the world, especially in rapidly-growing economies.

The 2011 Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe. Odds are pretty good he’s just supporting his business: there’s likely some of his steel in the car!

Lilliane Bettencourt

Net Worth: $23.5 billion

Bettencourt just has one business, which is her pride and joy. She’s the majority shareholder of makeup company L’Oreal.

Obviously, Mercedes C-Class coupes are popular! Either they’re magnificent, or Mercedes was having one heck of a sale!

Even if your net worth isn’t quite a billion dollars (yet), it’s important to protect your investment, and ideally to do it as cheaply as possible. Enter your zip code below and start comparing auto insurance quotes for FREE!
