The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a nonprofit and independent organization. The group is dedicated to trying to reduce the number of losses from motor vehicle crashes.

They work with the Highway Loss Data Institute to do studies of insurance data. The studies are based on human and economic losses from different types of vehicles on the road.

The safety testing is performed by both groups and the results are analyzed extensively.

There are three different categories of testing.

  • crashworthiness
  • crash avoidance and mitigation
  • child seat anchors (LATCH)

The scores that are given range as follows:

  • good
  • acceptable
  • marginal
  • poor

In the category of crashworthiness, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2017 Dodge Durango tied.

In the front small overlap test, the score was Marginal for both vehicles. For the front moderate overlap test, the highest rating of Good was given.

Both the Dodge Durango, as well as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, received the highest rating for the other subcategories in this test. For a four-door SUV, these are excellent results, but that does not help you decide between the two does it?

Crash Avoidance and Mitigation

There were some differences with the 2017 Dodge Durango and 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the crash avoidance and mitigation category. They both scored a Basic front crash prevention, the lowest score you can receive in this category.

When you compare the headlights, the Jeep Grand Cherokee that had the higher rating of Acceptable. The Dodge Durango only had a score of Marginal.

Child Seat Anchors

When it comes to child seat anchors, the Dodge Durango that had a higher score. When you are bringing kids in and out of the car, you want the child car seats to be easy to use and also to provide a good level of safety.

If you are a family with young ones or will soon be, and you need to be putting child seats in and out, you should be aware that the Durango that had the higher ease of use score.

2017 Top Safety Pick and/or 2017 Top Safety Pick+

Neither of these two vehicles that we have compared received the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors among the 2017 models.

While both of them had some Good scores across many of the tests, the cumulative safety score for each vehicle was not high enough earn these awards.

When comparing the Jeep Grand Cherokee to the Dodge Durango, you need to decide which safety features are more important to you.

If you are using child safety seats, the Dodge Durango that has the higher score, with the rest of the scores being mostly comparable.

If you do not need child safety seats, the Jeep Grand Cherokee scores more top marks with the headlights, giving it the safety edge. Have these considerations in mind as you start to think about what car to buy, and also factor in car insurance premiums.
