Facts about Insurance and Car Insurance Rates

Every state sets its own financial responsibility laws for drivers in the state. These limits vary from state to state.

Legislatures indicate the minimum limits of liability for insurance carried in the state.

The following limits of liability and coverage are suggested to meet the required limits for most states:

  • Bodily Injury Liability – Coverage that pays for your responsibility for bodily injury to others in the event of an accident
  • Property Damage Liability – Coverage to reimburse others for your responsibility for property damage liability
  • Medical Payments Coverage – Pays for medical payments for you and your family in the event of an accident
  • Uninsured Motorists – Coverage to pay for your own bodily injury if you are involved in an accident with someone who does not have car insurance
  • Personal Injury Protection – Coverage is in lieu of medical payments and uninsured motorists in states that require no-fault insurance

None of the above coverage applies to your own vehicle.

If you need to protect your own investment in your car, you will need the following coverage:

  • Comprehensive – Pays for vandalism, fire, theft, animal damage, weather, and glass damage to your vehicle
  • Collision – Pays for collision damage to your vehicle for most reasons even though it is your fault

A deductible is customarily added to comprehensive and collision. The deductible can vary from $100 to $1,000 per accident, depending upon the amount your loan company will accept or that you estimate you can afford.
