What happens if I drive without car insurance?

Driving without insurance coverage could cost you money. If you’re involved in an accident and are uninsured, you will be held liable for injuries to the other driver and any damages to their vehicle.

In additions to that, there are several other reasons:

  • If your state has laws in place stating that you need to carry car insurance but you don’t, you will be held liable. (All states require that you either carry auto insurance or proof of financial ability to pay for damages.)
  • You will be held responsible for medical bills, property damage and will most likely be doing community service to work off fines.
  • If you have a lapse in automobile coverage, it will be hard to obtain affordable coverage when you reapply for car insurance.

Most states require a minimum car insurance. (The financial proof option requires a deposit of about $35,000. The only state that currently accepts this alternative is New Hampshire.)

Some states require only liability coverage. Liability is the cheapest car insurance you can obtain, as many state minimums are well below recommended coverage levels of 100/300/100.

If you continue to drive without insurance, you could have your tags pulled and your car impounded. In the long run, this will cost you more money than if you had just purchased car insurance.

Can I get a discount on car insurance?

Single mothers often get discounts on auto insurance if they have a child. You also get discounts for safe driving, and some companies offer accident forgiveness plans.

Taking a safe driver course could also save money on car insurance. Having anti-lock brakes and anti-theft devices on your vehicle can also give you discounts on car insurance quotes.

Other discounts you may be eligible for include:

You may also want to inquire about multi-vehicle discounts, anti-theft devices and airbags, low mileage and running lights as well as anti-lock brakes. Ask about discounts for your children living away from home at college and about your long-term customer status.
