Wyoming Insurance Coverage and Rates

Our first order of business is to go in depth about the coverage and rates you can expect for driving in Wyoming. We’ll cover topics such as minimum liability coverage, core coverage, rates by city and zip code, and more.

Keep reading to find out.

– Wyoming Minimum Coverage

Minimum liability coverage is required in every state across the nation. Why? It ensures that if you are ever in an accident, that you have the insurance that will cover the costs that you’ll need. Otherwise, you could end up going bankrupt! Accidents can be extremely pricey.

What exactly can you expect from Wyoming’s minimum liability coverage then?

Well, Wyoming follows something known as a 25/50/20 minimum coverage, explained for you down below:

  • 25 = $25,000 for the coverage of any bodily injuries/death of ONE person
  • 50 = $50,000 for the coverage of any bodily injuries/death of MULTIPLE people
  • 20 = $20,000 for the coverage of any property damage

Something to make note of here is that this is the MINIMUM coverage you can have in order to legally drive in Wyoming. It’s always recommended to at least consider getting above this minimum, as it may not always be enough to protect you.

Your insurance provider will only pay up to the limits you’ve gotten your policy for, so if you’re ever in a bad enough accident that requires more than that, you’ll have to pay out of pocket in order to cover it.

– Forms of Financial Responsibility

Forms of financial responsibility, also known as proof of insurance, is a way for you to show that you carry that minimum liability coverage and are legally allowed to drive. There are various ways in which you can show this proof of insurance, such as carrying a valid insurance ID card or a copy of your insurance policy.

One way Wyoming citizens can rest easy with this, however, is that the state of Wyoming has a program called the Financial Responsibility Verification Program. What exactly does this program do?

Well, let’s say one day, you walk out of the door and happened to forget your insurance card. Then a little bit down the road, you get pulled over by law enforcement. This program helps citizens out by allowing police offers to electronically check registered vehicles for insurance.

So while it is always recommended to carry your proof of insurance with you at all times, it can a least be a little bit of a relief for those Monday’s where you barely remember to bring your own head with you, let alone your proof of insurance.

– Premiums as a Percentage of Income

How much your disposable income is can affect how much you’ll be paying for your car insurance.

Did you know that Wyoming citizen’s average disposable income is on the higher side compared to other states? Check out the chart below if you don’t believe us.

– Additional Liability

There are additional liability coverage options that you can get in addition to your minimum coverage. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage are the most common.

There currently isn’t much data on any optional Personal Injury Protection in Wyoming, but there is for Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage.

YearLoss Ratio
201349.08
201456.18
201549.32

The data above represents the loss ratio of insurance companies for this type of coverage. A loss ratio is a calculation of how much a company is earning through premiums as compared to how much they are paying out through claims.

If a company has a loss ratio that’s too high (over 100 percent), that company is paying out too much in claims and not taking enough in through premiums. This company is at a much higher risk of going bankrupt because of this.

If a company has a loss ratio that’s too low, that company isn’t paying out enough to their customers.

You can see that loss ratio’s for Wyoming are on the lower side, so companies are likely not paying out enough to their clients. Due to this, you may see a reduction in premiums to counteract this in the future.

Best Car Insurance Companies in Wyoming

In order to get car insurance, you obviously will have to find the right car insurance company for you. That can be immensely intimidating, considering the hundreds of providers vying for your business.

But not to worry, that’s where we come in! We’ll break down the top insurance providers in the state of Wyoming, covering everything from their financial ratings all the way to the number of insurers in the state.

– Largest Companies Financial Rating

Car insurance companies want to make sure that you are responsible when issuing out an insurance policy, right? That way they make sure that you’re able to pay them for their coverage. Well, the same can be said about those car insurance companies. You want to ensure that these companies are just as financially responsible as you, right?

An A.M. Best Rating determines that companies financial strength based on numerous factors. The higher the score, the more reliable that company is. For instance, companies such as Geico, USAA Group, and State Farm Group, all have A++ ratings. That’s the highest A.M. Best Rating that you can receive, so you know that you can depend on these companies.

– Companies with the Best Customer Ratings

When you’re shopping for anything at any place, what’s the one thing you always take into consideration? Even if you don’t think of it outright. That’s right, how satisfied you are with that company you are shopping at.

After all, if you’re not happy with what you’re getting from that company, you’re not going to continue shopping there. Right?

Same goes for car insurance providers. If you are satisfied with what you’re getting out of your policy, that company’s customer satisfaction ranking is going to be impacted.

J.D. Power recently did an auto insurance study back in 2018 to find out which companies had the highest customer satisfaction ratings based on region. Wyoming falls under the Northwest region, so below is the results of that study.

– Companies with Most Complaints in Wyoming

Customer satisfaction can be a double-edged sword for insurance providers. This comes with complaints, and the more complaints a company has, the more likely people will be wary of that provider.

Have you had one too many violations on your driving record? If so, chances are you’ve had a pretty difficult time finding insurance coverage. A lot of insurance providers tend to avoid giving out coverage to drivers they deem as high-risk, and even if they do offer coverage, it’s often outrageously expensive.

You have to have insurance coverage in order to legally drive in Wyoming, so what are you to do? Well luckily for you, there’s a solution. It’s known as the Wyoming Automobile Insurance Plan (WAIP). This plan was created in order to help provide automobile coverage to those aren’t able to get coverage from a willing insurance provider.

If you qualify and are accepted into the program, you are assigned to an insurance provider, who then will be required to offer you some sort of insurance coverage. These providers are legally bound to this because, in order to even offer coverage in Wyoming, they must agree to be apart of this program.

– Low-Cost Insurance

Wyoming currently doesn’t offer any low-cost insurance coverage, but don’t let this discourage you. There are plenty of different ways you can save on your insurance coverage. Aside from things such as having a clean driving record, a good credit history, or a short commute, there may be insurance discounts that you qualify for.

Check out the list below of some of the most common car insurance discount to see if you qualify for any:

  • Good Student
  • Safe Driver / Accident-less Driver
  • Homeowners
  • Multiple Vehicles
  • Paperless / Green (discounts offered if you opt for a paperless insurance policy)
  • Auto-Payments
  • Safety Devices

– Windshield Coverage

There are currently no specific laws in Wyoming regarding windshield coverage or repair.

It is definitely a coverage type that can be worth it in the long run, as it can help you out with something that’s considerably important to your vehicle. The windshield.

– Automobile Insurance Fraud in Wyoming

Automobile insurance fraud is considered a criminal offense in not only Wyoming but in all states across the nation. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), insurance companies experience $30 billion in loses every year!

You can commit insurance fraud by:

  • Faking an accident
  • Falsifying a claim after an accident
  • Adding additional “costs” onto a legitimate claim

If you do commit insurance fraud, you could be facing some hefty penalties, including jail time. Avoid all the hassle, it’s simply not worth it.

– Statute of Limitations

Statute of limitations dictates exactly the amount of time that you have in order to file a claim after an accident.

In Wyoming, you have four years to file a bodily injury claim or a property damage claim.

So remember, if you need to make a claim after an accident, you only have four years to submit that claim. Time flies fast, so make sure the compensation you may need after an accident doesn’t fly away too.

– Vehicle Licensing Laws

Another requirement for legally driving out on the open road is having your driver’s license. There are several laws and procedures you’ll need to adhere to and remember for Wyoming.

– Penalties for Driving without Insurance

We mentioned previously about Wyoming having an online verification system for checking for your insurance. So if you indeed have car insurance and just happened to forget it, you’re in the clear here.

If you get caught without ANY insurance at all, it’s considered a misdemeanor in the state of Wyoming. The penalties for this range from $500 to $1500 in fines as well as possibly up to six months in jail.

So if you weren’t convinced previously about the need for getting car insurance, hopefully, this section will put a kick in your step.

– Teen Driver Laws

Teen drivers can get their driver’s license as young as 16 years old in Wyoming.

There are only a few restrictions for teens when it comes to driving in Wyoming, as you can see in the table listed below.

– Rules of the Road

Now on to some of the specific rules of the road for Wyoming.

Each state varies with what types of rules for the road they have. After all, no two states are the same, so why should their road rules?

Keep reading to find out more.

– Fault Versus No-Fault

Wyoming falls under something known as an at-fault system. This means that if you are the one who caused an accident, you (and your insurance provider) are responsible for paying for the damages and personal injuries from that accident.

If you have the proper coverage, you should be fine! If you only have the minimum coverage, however, you could be at risk for substantial costs should you ever find yourself in an accident. This is why it’s always wise to consider getting more than the minimum coverage.

– Seat Belt and Car Seat Laws

Wyoming wants to keep all drivers and passengers safe. That is why they have laws for seat belts and car seats, to protect everyone in a vehicle.

Seat belt laws in Wyoming dictate that anyone who is nine years old and older, in either the front or the back seat, should be using a seat belt. Children that are eight years and younger are required to be in a car seat in the rear of the vehicle.

– Keep Right and Move Over Laws

Keep Right laws state that you should keep right on the road if you are moving slower than the traffic around you.

Move Over laws state that if you see an emergency vehicle, you need to move over. Examples of this can include ambulances, fire trucks, law enforcement, utility vehicles, and more. Rule of thumb is that if it has flashing lights, you need to move over safely into another lane.

Easy enough right?

– Ridesharing

We’ve all have at least heard of ridesharing services, even if you haven’t used one. Services such as Uber and Lyft that allow passengers to travel to their destination with just the push of a button. Well back in 2007, ridesharing was legally authorized in Wyoming, bringing Uber to the citizens of Wyoming.

The added benefit of those who are looking to work for Uber, is that they have special insurance to cover those drivers working for them.

– Automation on the Road

The future may be closer than we think when it comes to automation on the road.

Wyoming has not made any regulations regarding automation, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t in the future.

– Safety Laws

Safety laws are put in place to help keep EVERYONE safe on the road.

– DUI Laws

Drinking and driving is one of the most deadly combinations known to man. It’s dangerous and cost the lives of not only yourself but others around you.

In order to combat this issue, Wyoming has some pretty hefty laws when it comes to DUI’s.

So remember, drinking and driving is NOT worth it! Drink in a safe location and make sure you have a safe way to get yourself home. It could cost your life otherwise.

– Marijuana-Impaired Driving Laws

Marijuana has become more widely legalized in many states across the nation. This puts some lawmakers in a pickle, however, because with such a new substance being legalized, how do you make driving laws for it?

Wyoming does not currently have any marijuana-specific driving laws, but Wyoming is also one such state that still criminalizes having and using marijuana. So if you are even caught with marijuana on you, you could be facing penalties regarding that.

Rule of thumb, don’t take substances before you get behind the wheel. It can slow your reaction time and make you prone to accidents.

– Distracted Driving Laws

Handheld devices are common these days and are vital to some people life and work. But with this surge of new technologies, lawmakers have cracked the whip down in order to prevent distracted driving.

Wyoming currently doesn’t have any hand-held bans, but it does have a texting ban that applies to ALL drivers. So if you are caught texting and driving, you WILL be given a citation.
