Here's what you need to know...

  • Comprehensive coverage and liability insurance plans are not the same
  • Comprehensive coverage protects you from fire, theft, vandalism, acts of God
  • Routine car repairs are not covered under liability or comprehensive insurance plans

Comprehensive car insurance covers accidental damage to your own vehicle. It is beneficial because it covers a wide array of incidents. Without fully comprehensive car insurance, you are not covered for any non-collision incidents.

Liability car insurance covers accidents caused to other parties and collision car insurance covers damage to your own car in accident related matters.

Without comprehensive car insurance your car is not covered for any other event. Whether your car is parked in a garage or moving down the highway, you need protection for your investment.

Fully comprehensive car insurance covers just about every type of damage that your car endures. Although car insurance does not cover maintenance issues, it does cover car damage from a variety of mishaps. Some of the things covered by fully comprehensive car insurance include:

  • Fire damage
  • Theft
  • Vandalism
  • Weather damage
  • Animal damage
  • Acts of God

Fires caused by car accidents are covered.  Theft, whether it’s the whole car, parts of the car, or personal belongings inside the car is also covered.

If your car is vandalized or damaged by inclement weather, that is also covered by fully comprehensive car insurance. The same is true if your car is damaged by an animal, such as if you accidentally strike a deer as you are driving.

Most Acts of God are events that are considered to be out of mankind’s control, such as earthquakes and tornadoes.

Acts of God are viewed differently by every insurance company, so check your policy to see what coverage you actually have.

When Fully Comprehensive Car Insurance Coverage is Necessary

You need fully comprehensive car insurance anytime you want to protect the investment you have in your car.

If your car is leased, then your lessor will probably require you to carry comprehensive car insurance. The same is true if your car is financed.

The only time fully comprehensive car insurance coverage is not necessary is when your car is of little value.

Otherwise, fully comprehensive car insurance is necessary so that you can afford to repair or replace your car regardless of the reason, provided it is an insurable incident.

Car insurance does not cover mechanical difficulties or breakdowns unless it is the result of an event that is insurable.

For example, if you strike a deer with your car, it is possible that your car can be damaged or even totaled. With comprehensive car insurance, you are covered up to the limits on your policy, which may include the cost of a new car.

You can buy optional insurance to cover things such as roadside assistance and towing, but that’s not part of your comprehensive car insurance.

However, many times comprehensive car insurance is bundled with collision car insurance to give you complete total protection.

When Comprehensive Car Insurance is not Necessary

Comprehensive insurance is not necessarily the best route for everyone. If you drive an old car or you don’t take very good care of your vehicle, it may not be worth spending the money on this coverage.

If it won’t cost much to repair or you wouldn’t get much money to replace it, it may be a good idea to skip this coverage on your policy.

Comprehensive coverage is relatively expensive insurance. If you are looking to not spend a lot on your insurance policy, you may choose to not purchase this coverage.

Fully Comprehensive Car Insurance and Collision Car Insurance

Comprehensive and collision car insurance are usually packaged together, but they can also be bought separately. However, it is a good idea to buy both comprehensive and collision insurance so that you have full car insurance coverage.

While comprehensive car insurance covers non-collision incidents, collision car insurance covers accident-related incidents.

If you are at fault for an accident, you liability car insurance will pay for injuries and damages sustained by a third party, but your car will not be covered.

If you do not have sufficient health insurance, you may also want to carry medical coverage for physical injuries.

If you are not at fault for the accident then you are covered by the other person’s liability insurance for both bodily injury and property damage.

Is it worth getting comprehensive car insurance?

Because comprehensive coverage can be more expensive, some people choose not to have it. If you want it, there are some things you can do to keep the cost lower.

If you choose a higher deductible, your premium will be less. In addition, if you choose limits that are lower, this will also lower the premiums.

Shop around for different insurance companies as well, as rates differ from company to company. To make sure that it is a financially stable company, you can look up an insurance company’s financial rating from A.M. Best Company.

A fully comprehensive car insurance plan is usually bundled with collision, whereas a regular comprehensive car insurance plan may not include collision.
