Here's what you need to know...
  • If you join an auto club, there is a chance you may be eligible for cheaper insurance rates
  • However, some auto insurance providers can offer the same benefits as an auto club
  • Always do your research to see if joining an auto club would be a good move for your needs

Certain auto clubs will get you cheaper car insurance rates, but the benefits vary according to club.

Unfortunately, your specific car insurance company may not offer a discounted rate for belonging to an auto club.

The type of auto club, the available benefits, the level of coverage, and the availability of the coverage in your state or by your insurance company all play a role in determining costs and cost savings.

What are the benefits of joining an auto club?

Years ago, joining an auto club was one of the only ways to get discounts on car insurance.

Organizations like AAA were founded and grew based on their ability to help drivers across the country with mechanical breakdowns, flat tires, and accidents.

Today, however, insurance companies are offering many of the same benefits as auto clubs but at a discounted rate.

It is important for drivers and consumers to compare rates, benefits, and cancellation processes before making a decision on joining an auto club.

How can I find out if there are any savings in joining an auto club?

First, research auto clubs and find one or two that have the most practical benefits for you and your family.

Benefits such as towing, flat tire repair, emergency gas fills, and accident assistance are all important.

Determining what is vital and what is just an extra can go a long way in helping to save money.

Most auto club websites will list all the benefits and the level of coverage that it takes in order to get those perks.

The next step would be to contact your current agent or the company directly and ask them if joining an auto club would reduce your premium.

If your current auto insurance company does not offer any savings associated with joining an auto club, contact other companies.

However, do not cancel your current policy until you have either found another one or determined that you want to make a change.

Are there any other options available?

More than likely, your current auto insurance company offers a roadside assistance plan that is similar to coverage offered by auto clubs.

The only difference might be additional discounts that auto clubs offer, such as hotel discounts and traveling assistance.

Ask your current auto insurance company if they have a roadside assistance program and what the cost would be to add it to your current policy.

Many of these roadside programs offer towing, emergency gas, general roadside assistance, lockout assistance, and directions.

There is usually only one level of coverage, and that amount is added to your premium on a monthly basis.

What are my savings?

Savings written on a graph with a calculator beside it.

After you have spoken to your auto insurance company and the auto club you would like to join, determine the levels and details of coverage available.

Take the annual cost of the auto club and compare it to the monthly premium increase if you added a roadside assistance plan to your coverage.

For example, a membership to AAA carries an annual cost of approximately $90 and includes roadside assistance benefits, as well as discounts on related services.

Geico Insurance Company offers a program known as emergency roadside assistance for as little as $14 per year per car.

If you are looking to join an auto club for the emergency roadside benefits, contact your carrier first.

The savings that you may earn can actually come from not joining the auto club but from adding the benefit available through your insurance company.
