Here's what you need to know...

  • Barbers and beauticians pay an average of $1,214 for car insurance annually
  • The main occupational factor that creates higher premiums for people with these careers is a slower response time due to the physicality of the job
  • Along with occupation, a person’s age, marital status, and driving record influence his or her insurance rate

The national average cost for auto insurance premiums for someone who is a barber or a beautician is $1,214.47 a year.

This rate is based on a pooled group of people who aren’t all good drivers or all bad drivers.

In addition, it is based on a variety of insurance products, which is why you could easily pay more or less than the national average.

Why do you pay more than others?

The truth is that you are paying more for your car insurance than people in other careers.

You are not paying the most, however, since the national average for your career is $200 less than that of a physician. This average is about $400 more than someone who is retired or someone who is unemployed.

So, why are the rates for these careers higher on average?

Well, it isn’t because of the stress in the workplace like it would be for a doctor; instead, it is about the physical toll your career can take on your body.

Studies show that men and women in your occupation experience more accidents because their reflexes are slower due to spending all day on their feet while using their hands to cut and style hair.

Slower response times mean that you aren’t able to react as quickly as you should to a potential threat while you are driving.

This leads to more accidents and higher rates.

While insurance companies know that there are exceptions to this rule, you are going to be assuming the risk of other drivers if you are in this career field.

What you need to understand is that all insurance companies base your rates on your potential risks rather than your actual risks.

Over time, you may see a reduction in your rates as you maintain a good driving record; however, if the insurance company you choose uses your occupation as a way to determine your rates, then your insurance premium will never go below that base rate.

Determining Your Base Rate

There is no way for us to tell you exactly what your base rate is going to be.

Not only are insurance companies allowed to keep that information to themselves, this rate is going to vary between each of these insurance companies.

In order to determine your rates, however, the insurance company will assign a rate percentage to each of the markers they consider.

In most cases, the insurance company would use:

Most insurance companies use your driving record as the most influential marker, unless you are a teen driver, and then they will take that into consideration first.

Using your occupation is a fairly new practice and not all insurance companies will even consider it as part of the way they determine your rates, which is why it is important to shop around for your auto insurance.

What else affects your rates?

After determining your base rate, the insurance company will then look at other factors to determine if you qualify for a lower rate. Some of those factors include:

  • Education level
  • Marital status
  • Safety features on vehicle
  • Area of residence
  • Number of policies with the company

Even if you qualify for every discount that an insurance company offers, your rates will not decrease below any of the base rates that affect your risk factors.

For example, if the insurance company decided that your base rate as a barber or a beautician is $400 a year and you qualify for every other discount, your rates wouldn’t go lower than that base rate.

The good news is that your own safety record can help keep your rates closer to that base rate than you might imagine.

Even though the national average is $1,214.47, that doesn’t mean that you will have to pay that much each year.

If you are buying liability only, you could pay far less; if you drive an expensive car, then you could end up paying more.
