Here’s What You Need to Know

  • American Family and Ameriprise Insurance offer many of the same types of car insurance coverage, but American Family gives you more payment options and apps.
  • Neither car insurance company is available in all states, and American Family auto insurance is available in fewer states than Ameriprise.
  • Ameriprise car insurance rates might be lower overall, but American Family Insurance offers better discounts.

When comparing American Family vs. Ameriprise auto insurance, you must first know that these are two connected companies.

American Family — also known as AmFam — acquired Ameriprise Auto & Home (AHH) in October 2019. In August 2020, AHH rebranded. Its new name is CONNECT, powered by American Family Insurance. However, many still refer to it as Ameriprise or Costco car insurance.

That said, American Family and Ameriprise have different approaches to service, offer unique discounts, and have different rates. For example, AmFam offers usage-based car insurance discounts while Ameriprise does not.

Ultimately, if both companies are available in your state, you should compare American Family and Ameriprise car insure quotes. You can use our free quote tool. Just enter your ZIP code above when you’re ready.

Are American Family and Ameriprise Available in your state?

When you are deciding whether to purchase American Family or Ameriprise, you need to first see if you can buy them in your state. American Family has a smaller primary reach, and Ameriprise is available in most states.

American Family operates under a network of other companies that it acquired and merged with. On its own, American Family serves customers in 19 states through independent contractors. Insurance under this brand is not available in states like California.

Ameriprise operates in 44 states and the District of Columbia. Its largest income base is in California. Many policyholders can acquire Ameriprise through partnerships.

If you already do business with Ameriprise Financial, you can get discounted rates through that company. Costco members can also purchase Ameriprise policies and enjoy extra perks, like roadside assistance and permanent renewability.

What sets American Family and Ameriprise apart in terms of coverage?

If Ameriprise and American Family car insurance are available in your state, consider what you will get in coverage with either company.

Both companies offer all the same types of coverages. For example, both offer collision, comprehensive, gap, liability car insurance coverage, and underinsured or uninsured motorist protection.

Both companies will reimburse you for rental car costs in some cases. (Note that Ameriprise calls this option “rental insurance coverage”).

The main things that may set these companies apart are costs, payment methods, and American Family’s phone apps.

American Family’s Cost vs. Ameriprise’s Cost

Ameriprise car insurance rates are generally lower than American Family car insurance rates. American Family car insurance’s yearly median rates can be as low as $1,400 and as high as $3,698.77.

The yearly rate for Ameriprise can be as low as $1,068. Drivers who sign up through Costco can save at least $600 for their first year.

American Family vs. Ameriprise Billing

While both companies have flexible payment options, there are a few key differences. For starters, American Family Insurance will allow you to pay by mail, online, or to set up autopay.

Ameriprise only offers two options to pay, making direct full payments and paying in five-month installments. For both options, customers can use a check or money order. Alternatively, Ameriprise accepts credit cards for direct full payments or authorizes withdrawals for installments.

It is not clear if Ameriprise allows policyholders to pay through the mail. Also, American Family takes Discover card, along with Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Ameriprise accepts all those cards except Discover.

That said, Ameriprise allows policyholders to pay for five months during a six-month period and to use a payment holiday during the sixth month.

American Family Insurance Apps

American Family offers a few apps, and it looks like Ameriprise offers none.

One app American Family offers is the MyAmFam App. It allows users to view their bills, schedule payments, and track the progress of their claims.

American Family also offers apps to monitor policyholders’ driving. Experienced drivers and teen drivers can earn discounts by showing good driving skills while using the apps.

American Family vs. Ameriprise: Which car insurance company offers the best discounts?

Although Ameriprise offers many of the same benefits, it seems that American Family Insurance offers better discounts overall.

Similar Discounts for American Family and Ameriprise

Both companies offer discounts for long-term customers. American Family’s is the Loyal Discount and Ameriprise offers the Tenure discount for long-term customers (at least three consecutive years).

Both companies offer good driving discounts, with a few caveats.

For example, the Good Driver Discount is available to all or most American Family policyholders. Ameriprise’s Good Driver discount is only available in California, but the company offers the Premier Safety Discount for many customers based on their overall driving record.

American Family offers a Good Student discount based on a current student’s standing (honor roll, dean’s list, GPA, performance on scholastic tests such as the SATs or ACT). Ameriprise offers an Education Discount for students who finish four years of postsecondary education.

And of course, Ameriprise and American Family Insurance offer multi-car and multi-policy discounts. However, Ameriprise offers discounts for these three combinations:

  • Auto/Home
  • Auto/Umbrella
  • Auto/Home/Umbrella

Discounts That Only American Family Insurance Offers

American Family offers seven discounts that Ameriprise does not offer.

Two of those discounts concern your driving habits.

  • The KnowYourDrive discount is connected to the app of that name. American Family drivers can download the app to their smartphones to monitor their driving. Drivers can save 10% for signing up and up to 20% for excellent driving.
  • The low mileage discount applies to drivers who total less than 7,500 miles during the year.

Three of those discounts concern younger drivers.

  • The Teen Safe Driver discount applies to teens on their parents’ policy who drive well and monitor their driving with an app.
  • The Young Volunteer discount applies to drivers between the ages of 16 and 25 who volunteer at nonprofits and maintain good grades.
  • The Generational discount applies to young drivers whose parents previously signed up with American Family Insurance.

Two discounts are connected to signup.

  • The Early-Bird discount applies to drivers who have an active policy with another company but receive a quote from American Family seven days before their AmFam policy becomes active.
  • Drivers can Steer into Savings by switching to American Family Insurance from one of its competitors.

Three Discounts are connected to payments. Drivers can save by using Auto Pay, paying in full, or going paperless for billing.

Ameriprise’s Garaging Discount

Ameriprise drivers may earn a discount if they park their car in a garage. However, this discount may not be available in most states.

American Family vs. Ameriprise: Which company has the best financial and consumer ratings?

It’s hard to compare American Family’s customer service ratings since it has limited reach on its own and Ameriprise auto insurance reviews are few and far between. However, there still is significant data for AmFam.

According to a 2020 study from J.D. Power, American Family has mixed results.

  • American Family Insurance received 834 out of a possible 1,000 points for the Southwest region. It was tied with GEICO in the region.
  • American Family received 814 points for the Central region, well below the regional average of 843 points.
  • The company received 827 points in the North Central region, three points below the regional average.

That said, American Family and Ameriprise have good financial ratings.

A.M. Best gave both companies an A (Excellent) rating for their financial strength. Both companies also received an A rating from the Better Business Bureau.
