What is Nationwide SmartRide car insurance?

SmartRide is a telematics program from Nationwide that offers customers a discount based on certain driving behaviors.

Although you can’t get Nationwide SmartRide car insurance quotes, you can save up to 40% with an extra 10% discount for enrolling.

Nationwide SmartRide activation is simple. Just let Nationwide know that you want to participate in the program. It’s free to enroll and won’t raise your rates if you do poorly.

There are two different ways to participate in SmartRide from Nationwide.

The easiest and most widely used method is the mobile app. Once the app is downloaded, it runs in the background on your phone. You can see how you are doing in the app and track your discount.

Drivers can also use a plug-in device to use SmartRide. Typically, this device is only used if you are already enrolled in another program, such as Nationwide SmartMiles.

The Nationwide SmartRide device installation is easy. It simply plugs into a port in your dash. When your monitoring time is complete, you will need to mail the device back to Nationwide to have your discount calculated.

You must participate in SmartRide for four to six months to receive your discount. Once your monitoring is over, you receive your discount for the life of your Nationwide car insurance policy beginning at your next renewal.

What does Nationwide SmartRide monitor?

With each company that offers a telematics program, the behaviors monitored will be different.

The specific behaviors SmartRide monitors are:

  • How far you drive – Drivers who rack up lots of miles have a higher chance of being in an accident
  • Time of day you drive – Driving late at night can also mean a higher chance of an accident
  • Hard braking and accelerating – Hitting your brakes hard or accelerating too quickly can signal aggressive driving or just a lack of attention to the road
  • Idle time – The amount of time your car sits can indicate heavy traffic; more cars equal more risk of an accident

Many drivers complain that it’s too difficult to get the full 40% discount with SmartRide. Typical discount amounts are around 20%, which will still save you on your car insurance.

SmartRide also maps your route, which means it tracks your location. This can lead to a privacy concern for some drivers.

Is Nationwide SmartRide car insurance worth it?

Nationwide SmartRide doesn’t cost you anything to use and won’t raise your rates if you drive poorly.

Even if you don’t get the full 40% SmartRide car insurance discount, you will still save at least 10% for signing up.

SmartRide is a great option for drivers who don’t drive late at night, sit in traffic, or rack up a lot of miles. If you have a long rush-hour commute, this program might not save you much money.

However, it can still improve your driving skills. According to the Insurance Information Institute, telematics programs such as SmartRide can make you a safer driver by giving you immediate feedback on how you’re driving.

Nationwide SmartRide Car Insurance: The Bottom Line

SmartRide offers a discount based solely on how you drive. This means that you determine how affordable Nationwide SmartRide car insurance is for you.

However, Nationwide isn’t your only option. The best auto insurance companies out there usually offer similar programs with discounts based on your driving behaviors.

Shop around and compare rates and discounts to find the best deal for you.
